With SDCC and most major cons cancelled in the wake of COVID-19, publishers are pushing their big announcements online for Comic-Con@Home. Marvel’s begins on Thursday with “Disney+/Marvel’s 616,” (the upcoming anthology docuseries), followed by the family-friendly “MARVEL HQ”, then, of course, “Marvel Comics: Next Big Thing,” will wrap things up on Friday.
Interestingly, while SDCC is typically a landslide of announcements, it seems that, based on this schedule, Marvel is still catching up with all the news it couldn’t release until now. For example, the main draw of the publisher’s most anticipated panel, “Next Big Thing”, focuses on Empyre and X of Swords – two events announced at C2E2 that were planned to have already hit shelves by now. Meanwhile, the other two panels are relatively void of salacious comic-goss. The Marvel’s 616 panel does bring on several directors, including Community star Gillian Jacobs, to talk about making-of and behind-the-scenes details, but doesn’t allude to any major news pieces. Meanwhile, “MARVEL HQ” offers more activity-oriented content including read-alongs, and “an epic LEGO battle,” as well as a behind-the-scenes look at Marvel’s Spider-Man: Maximum Venom.
