Sony may have delayed the Kraven the Hunter film, but Sony is still keen on establishing its own Spider-Man Universe. Case in point, the first Madame Web trailer starring Dakota Johnson as the titular character was released.

Official description of the film:

“Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.

As revealed in the Madame Web trailer, Johnson isn’t the only arachnid themed heroine. The film will introduce Julia Carpenter (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced). They’re pursued by Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim) donning his own Spider-Man-esque cosplay.

The cast also includes Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet in undisclosed roles. Scott can be seen in the Madame Web trailer as a paramedic colleague of Cassandra. The current theory on social media is that Scott is playing Uncle Ben. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

After the less than stellar box office results of The Marvels last weekend, I’m sure Sony is hoping this female-led superhero film won’t suffer the same fate.

Madame Web arrives in theaters February 14, 2024.
