Today’s the day the clues to DC’s new streaming service start officially getting dropped.  The first really NEW announcement is Swamp Thing.

Yes, Swampy’s had a bit more mainstream exposure than people necessarily realize.  There were a couple films, a USA cable channel TV series (that I believe ME-TV was showing reruns of recently) and even a cartoon.  According to Variety, there’s a live action TV series being prepped for 2019.  You get three guesses where that’s going to stream and the first two don’t count.  (Hint: it starts with “DC” and ends in “Universe.”)

This is how Variety has the synopsis:

Based on the DC Comics characters created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, the one-hour drama series would follow CDC researcher Abby Arcane, who returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus. She develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland, only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.

Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman will be writing and producing.  Verheiden’s one of the original class of comics/TV/film crossover writers.  Dauberman wrote the Annabelle films that are a spin-off from The Conjuring… but more importantly, wrote Swamp Devil.

No, I haven’t seen Swamp Devil, but it seems relevant here.

This is all under the banner of James Wan’s Atomic Monster operation.  Wan’s currently working on the Aquaman film, but is best known for The Conjuring and Saw film series.  You’re never sure how involved the executive producer is day to day operations from show to show, but Wan definitely seems like a good person to have involved with a Swamp Thing series.

More details will doubtless follow as we get closer to 2019 and DC Universe starts making more concrete announcements.
