The complete list of Ignatz Award winners, as presented Saturday night at the Small Press Expo. Winners were voted on by festival attendees and presented at a ceremony hosted by Keith Knight. Rosemary Valero-O’Connell was on had to accept three awards – two for Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me, the graphic novel written by Mariko Tamaki and published by First Second, and one for Outstanding Artist. As usual the list of winners was among the most diverse of any awards, with two women of color and numerous trans and queer winners. Among the former, Most Promising Newcomer Ebony Flowers, who noted that nearing age 40, it’s been a long time since she was called new and promising anything. And Ngozi Ukazu won yet another award for her genre-bending Check Please! Among the latter, the all-trans anthology We’re Still Here and Emma Jayne’s Trans Girls Hit the Town, published by new publisher Diskette Press. Queer themes were represented in almost all the other winners, including Laura Dean itself.
It was, as always, an emotional night – “This is all I’ve ever wanted to do! This is all I’ve ever wanted to be!” said an emotional Valero-O’Connell on winning her third, Outstanding Artist award – and you can read my on the scene reporting in my Twitter feed and more photos here.
