To help them celebrate their 25th Anniversary, metro Washington DC-based comics shop chain Big Planet commissioned cartoonist Nick Abadzis to create “The Alternative Endings to Laika Show” . As you may recall. Abadzis’s graphic novel LAIKA concerns the true like story of the Russian pooch who was shot into space in 1957…never to return, making her the space race version of Old Yeller. Congrats to Joel Pollack and the great staff at Big Planet Comics! Every weekend, from ’94-97 I would take the metro out to Bethesda to buy my comics. It’s not a big store, but well stocked, well run, and accessible to passers-by.

    For some incredible history, read:

I greatly enjoyed this graphic novel when it came out. I wasn’t greatly upset by the ending since I was aware of the history.

Not sure if creating an alternative ending was necessary, but it’s nice that the author was willing to accommodate readers–and that the Internet made it possible without violating the integrity of the original work!
