Entertainment Weekly reports Jimmy Tatro (Scream 7) has been cast as Gorilla Grodd on the upcoming HBO Max series starring Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. The show, which has been dubbed “DC Crime” (despite James Gunn stating this is not the title), will follow Jimmy as he investigates various evil metahumans of the DCU, beginning with Grodd, who’ll be the focus of the first season. Tatro, 34, previously worked with showrunners Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda on the first season of their Netflix series American Vandal in 2017.
Tatro has also starred on Home Economics and The Real Bros of Simi Valley (which he co-created for YouTube), and appeared in Theater Camp, The King of Staten Island, Stuber, Super Troopers 2, and 22 Jump Street. His voice acting credits includes The Mighty Ones, Fast & Furious Spy Racers, Family Guy, Monsters at Work, Strays, Rumble, and Smallfoot. He is next set to co-star with Will Ferrell on the Netflix series The Hawk, premiering Thursday, July 16.
His casting means the door is open for him to reappear as Grodd on the big screen, which would mark the first time the character has appeared in a theatrical release. The psychic gorilla, who was created by by John Broome and Carmine Infantino for 1959’s The Flash #106, made his live-action debut on The CW’s Flash series (voiced by David Sobolov) in 2014, where he became a recurring villain, and crossed over to Legends of Tomorrow in 2017.
The latter CW show famously featured Grodd being sent back in time to kill Barack Obama (Lovell Adams-Gray) as a college student. Whether that’ll be referenced on the Jimmy Olsen series, which is set to begin filming this fall (presumably for a release in late 2027), remains to be seen.
In the meantime, Gisondo will reprise the role of Olsen in the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, out July 9, 2027, and the next DCU series, Lanterns, will premiere on HBO on Sunday, August 16. The latest animated version of Jimmy, voiced by Ishmel Sahid, is also currently appearing on My Adventures with Superman season three, airing Saturday nights on Adult Swim, at 12 am ET/PT.
