Although most early reports have said that James Gunn will be focusing his upcoming superhero sequel The Suicide Squad on other DC characters than the ones that appeared in David Ayer’s 2016 movie, at least one actor has confirmed that he’ll be back. That actor is Australia’s Jai Courtney who played Captain Boomerang in that movie, as he told Business Insider.
Will Smith, who played Deadshot, has already stepped away from returning but writer/director Gunn replaced him readily with Idris Elba. It’s still unclear whether Courtney’s return means others might also be back, but while doing press for his upcoming film Storm Boy, he said:
“We’re getting ready to shoot in a few months’ time. There’s not much else I can reveal about it but, yeah, you’ll be seeing Boomerang back for sure.”
There’s still no word on whether we might see fellow Aussie Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn or Jared Leto’s Joker returning. Robbie is finishing up her Birds of Prey movie for its release next February, and the Joker is getting himself an origin story with Todd Phillips’ Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix. That last movie comes out on October 4, and we’re hoping that Warner Bros. will be showing some footage from either or both at next week’s CinemaCon.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. has already set Gunn’s The Suicide Squad for August 6, 2021 (five years to the weekend of the first movie’s release), and then he’ll go right back to Marvel for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, which is now rumored for release in 2022.
