Another decent month for Image, who have all of the top four new entries, including Warren Ellis’s return to creator-owned books. Elsewhere Valiant appear to be going through a radical shift in publishing model, and don’t look too healthy over-all. Stick around after the top 300, as there’s a bit of an extra this month.
149 indie titles charted in the top 300, slightly down on last month’s 151. Overall sales were up at 1,632,573, compared to last month’s 1,688,787 and the average sales this month are 10,957, down on last month’s 11,184. 16 titles went up in sales and 116 went down, with the rest made up of new entries and specials.
Image are number one again with an 8.86% dollar share and an 9.96% market share, IDW go up to second place with a 6.38% dollar share and 4.18% market share. Dark Horse have a 5.96% dollar share and a 5.50% market share, Dynamite have a 2.30% dollar share and 2.29% market share and Boom! have a 1.97 % dollar share and 1.84% market share.
UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

Another new arc, new boost in sales. In fact sales return to within a couple hundred copies of the beginning of the last arc, which is very healthy. We really are tremendously lucky that Vaughan has returned to comics, aren’t we?

Brandon Montclare, writer of Rocket Girl, was kind enough to make some very interesting points in last month’s comments section, explaining that if the book stays around the 12,000 mark, he and artist Amy Reeder make as much as either of them would working on a book at Marvel & DC. However, 8,000 or lower and the book can’t survive for long. So unfortunately at the moment the book is on the edge a bit. It’s taking a break before the next arc now, hopefully the trade will do well.

As I suspected, 3,267 copies of last month’s issue slipped to this month, and it actually did pretty well once those numbers are added. It drops a little this month, but there is another Mega Man crossover coming up, not a surprise after the success of the last one.

The last two of the new Gold Key books, not holding up very well.
204. BPRD (Dark Horse) 05/2013: Hell on Earth #107 Wasteland #1 - 10,493 ==== 06/2013: Hell on Earth #108 - 10,093 (-3.8%) 07/2013: Hell on Earth #109 - 10,018 (-0.7%) 08/2013: Hell on Earth #110 - 9,842 (-1.8%) 09/2013: Hell on Earth #111 - 9,587 (-2.5%) 10/2013: Hell on Earth #112 - 9,497 (-0.9%) 11/2013: Hell on Earth #113 - 8,904 (-6.2%) 12/2013: Hell on Earth #114 - 8,668 (-2.6%) 01/2014: Hell on Earth #115 - 9,072 (+4.7%) 02/2014: Hell on Earth #116 - 8,674 (-4.4%) 03/2014: Hell on Earth #117 - 8,510 (-1.9%) 04/2014: Hell on Earth #118 - 8,473 (-0.4%) 05/2014: Hell on Earth #119 - 8,306 (-2.0%)
Standard attrition.
205. Flash Gordon (Dynamite) 04/2014: Flash Gordon #1 - 14,398 05/2014: Flash Gordon #2 - 8,255 (-42.7%)
Not a great drop.
206. Littlest Pet Shop (IDW) 05/2014: Littlest Pet Shop #1 - 8,211
Squarely aimed at the My Little Pony audience, but I suspect the reduced sales reflect the lack of cache amongst the bronies…
207. Sex (Image) 05/2013: Sex #3 - 20,509 ==== 06/2013: Sex #4 - 17,938 (-12.5%) 07/2013: Sex #5 - 15,996 (-10.8%) 08/2013: Sex #6 - 14,488 (-9.4%) 09/2013: Sex #7 - 13,074 (-9.8%) 10/2013: Sex #8 - 12,082 (-7.6%) 12/2013: Sex #9 - 10,707 (-11.4%) 01/2014: Sex #10 - 9,947 (-7.1%) 02/2014: Sex #11 - 9,302 (-6.5%) 03/2014: Sex #12 - 8,830 (-5.1%) 04/2014: - 05/2014: Sex #13 - 8,192 (-7.2%)
Still falling fast, but probably approaching the point of unprofitability.
208. The Veil (Dark Horse) 03/2014: Veil #1 - 14,445 04/2014: Veil #2 - 9,627 (-33.3%) 05/2014: Veil #3 - 8,184 (-15.0%)
An average third-issue drop, certainly this isn’t doing as well as his series Lazarus.

A slightly smaller drop this month, but not looking too good.

Ending at #25, and going to a mini-series, Omegas. The future does not appear to be very bright.
211. Revenge (Image) 02/2014: Revenge #1 - 17,362 03/2014: Revenge #2 - 10,112 (-41.8%) 04/2014: - 05/2014: Revenge #3 - 7,969 (-21.2%)
Rather a steep drop, only one more issue to go.

Slipping, I hope it stabilizes soon though, I’d like this book to be around a lot longer.
214. Godzilla (IDW) 05/2013: Godzilla #12 - 6,782 ==== 06/2013: Godzilla Rulers of The Earth #1 - 9,813 (+44.7%) 07/2013: Godzilla #13 - 6,741 (-0.6%) 08/2013: Godzilla Rulers of The Earth #2 - 7,483 (-23.7%) 08/2013: Godzilla Rulers of The Earth #3 - 7,080 (-5.4%) 09/2013: Godzilla Rulers of The Earth #4 - 6,820 (-3.7%) 10/2013: Godzilla Rulers of The Earth #5 - 6,920 (+1.4%) 11/2013: Godzilla Rulers of The Earth #6 - 6,653 (-3.9%) 12/2013: Godzilla Rulers of The Earth #7 - 6,587 (-0.9%) 01/2014: Godzilla Rulers of The Earth #8 - 6,530 (-0.8%) 02/2014: Godzilla Rulers of The Earth #9 - 6,531 (0%) 03/2014: Godzilla Rulers of The Earth #10 - 6,677 (+0.2%) 04/2014: Godzilla Rulers of The Earth #11 - 6,917 (-3.6%) 05/2014: Godzilla Rulers of The Earth #12 - 7.890 (+14.1%)
A bit of a boost as the film comes out.
215. Clive Barker Nightbreed (Boom!) 05/2014: Clive Barkers Nightbreed #1 - 7,790
Not a great start for the return of Barker’s monster clan.
216. I assume this is a sequel to the Oz series. Not a very auspicious start for this either.
217. The Shadow Midnight Moscow (Dynamite) 05/2014: Shadow Midnight Moscow #1 - 7,772
Coming in a little above the main title.

The beginning of a four-parter featuring Mega Man X as well as the normal version gets a nice boost.
220. Despite being one of the lower selling of their books, A&A is continuing as an ongoing series. Possibly because a film has just been announced.
223. Sonic Universe (Archie) 05/2013: Sonic Universe #52 - 11,500 ==== 06/2013: Sonic Universe #53 - 11,123 (-3.3%) 07/2013: Sonic Universe #54 - 11,398 (+2.5%) 08/2013: Sonic Universe #55 - 9,239 (-18.9%) 09/2013: Sonic Universe #56 - 9,253 (+0.1%) 10/2013: Sonic Universe #57 - 8,874 (-4.1%) 11/2013: Sonic Universe #58 - 8,433 (-5.0%) 12/2013: Sonic Universe #59 - 8,123 (-3.7%) 01/2014: - 02/2014: Sonic Universe #60 - 7,902 (-2.7%) 03/2014: Sonic Universe #61 - 7,715 (-2.4%) 04/2014: Sonic Universe #62 - 7,927 (-2.7%) 05/2014: Sonic Universe #63 - 7,507 (-5.3%)
A slightly bigger than normal drop, but it’ll probably rebound a bit.
226. Star Trek New Visions (IDW) 05/2014: Mirror Cracked #1 - 7,411
An odd concept this, a book using photo-montage of the original series to tell new stories, executed and written by John Byrne. It’s an $8 book, so these are quite healthy sales.
227. Bloodshot (Valiant) 05/2013: Bloodshot #11 - 11,146 ==== 06/2013: Bloodshot #12 - 12,145 (+9.0%) 07/2013: Bloodshot #12 - 10,058 (-17.2%) 08/2013: Bloodshot #0 - 11,303 (+12.4%) 09/2013: Bloodshot & The Hard Corps #14 - 10,225 (-9.5%) 10/2013: Bloodshot & The Hard Corps #15 - 9,806 (-4.1%) 11/2013: Bloodshot & The Hard Corps #16 - 8,666 (-11.6%) 12/2013: Bloodshot & The Hard Corps #17 - 8,142 (-6.0%) 01/2014: Bloodshot & The Hard Corps #18 - 8,529 (+4.8%) 02/2014: Bloodshot & The Hard Corps #0 - 7,895 (-7.4%) 02/2014: Bloodshot & The Hard Corps #19 - 7,281 (-7.8%) 03/2014: Bloodshot & The Hard Corps #20 - 7,929 (+8.9%) 04/2014: Bloodshot & The Hard Corps #21 - 7,630 (-3.8%) 05/2014: Bloodshot & The Hard Corps #22 - 7,350 (-3.7%)
Penultimate issue, then into an Armour Hunters Miniseries. After that, who knows?
230. Falling hard.
232. Black Dynamite (IDW) 01/2014: Black Dynamite #1 - 11,040 05/2014: Black Dynamite #2 - 7,233 (-34.5%)
Average second-issue drop.

It looks like this is ending with #12, to be replaced by a mini-series teaming them up with Archer & Armstrong.
236. Pathfinder (Dynamite) 05/2013: Pathfinder #7 - 6,313 ==== 06/2013: - 07/2013: Pathfinder #8 - 6,085 (-3.6%) 08/2013: - 09/2013: Pathfinder #9 - ??? (???) 10/2013: Pathfinder #10 - ???? (???) 11/2013: Pathfinder #11 - 5,110 (???) 05/2014: Pathfinder City of Secrets #1 - 7,101 (+39.0)
Not a bad start compared to the last series, but if it suffers the usual Dynamite second-issue drop this could be it’s last appearance here.
237. Warlord of Mars Dejah Thoris (Dynamite) 05/2013: Dejah Thoris #25 - 6,724 ==== 06/2013: Dejah Thoris #26 - 6,593 (-1.9%) 07/2013: Dejah Thoris #27 - 6,506 (-1.3%) 08/2013: Dejah Thoris #28 - 6,366 (-2.2%) 09/2013: Dejah Thoris #29 - ???? It looks like this is the last gasp for the Mars books. After this four-issue series there’s nothing scheduled.
238. For the first time this month Diamond have made the entire top 400 available on its website. Unfortunately I’m not able to cover those titles in the same depth as the rest of the chart, as it would add another week to the production of the column, but I’m listing the notable books, largely in surprise at how low some of these books sell.
304 Clone #16 (Mr) – 4,593
309 Mark Waid Green Hornet #12 – 4,491
314 Bounce #12 – 4,364
319 Dark Horse Presents #36 – 4,087
328 Clive Barker Next Testament #9 – 3,764
330 X #13 – 3,722
332 Artifacts #37 – 3,717
338 Fathom Kiani Vol 3 #3 – 3,605
350 Sixth Gun #40 – 3,058
352 Suicide Risk #13 – 3,009
355 Gravel Combat Magician #4 – 2,953
357 Minimum Wage #5 – 2,878
365 Ordinary #1 – 2,740

397 Star Mage #2 – 1,839

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.
Thanks for including the extra chart.
I also think it’s important to show a wider range of the sales chart. It is rather amazing how some titles are barely hanging on, or even underwater in hopes that something will turn around.
However, sometimes publishing even at low numbers still pays off when considering the possibility of a trade in the future — which can have some legs. Other than that, I’m sure many creators just *want* to tell their stories even against the odds. God bless them. I know I’m one.
Nonetheless, it’s good to see a wider range. I might help spread the word and rally support. Often folks assume the book they love is doing okay because it continues to be published, but often readers are unaware of the sacrifices being made against the market. As I’ve always said… it’s not all that hard to break into comics, but it’s hard to STAY in comics.
I love Suicide Risk. Shame it sells so few copies.
And I love A Voice In The Dark.
It should not be selling that low, either. It started out in the double digits.
But when looking at ALL the numbers I often find it amazing that even A-list books start out very high and drop down to single digit numbers. It seems a title needs to start out with at least 17K+ so it can level out around 9K just so it can get legs and survive the drops.
But it’s like this in a lot of industries. There are only so many winners, there’s usually a 10% top cream of the crop, and then there’s a wide range of folks supporting the industry at the base. It’s a tough nut to crack.
Qucik Correction: At #181 Madame Frankenstein is written by Jamie S. Rich not Steve Niles (with art by Megan Levens.)
Niles writes (with Damien Worn on art) Monsters & Madmen (at number 276). Niles also writes Frankenstein Alive, Alive (with Berni Wrightson), which isn’t on chart this month.
Thanks for sharing those titles beyond #300. Yeah, it’s a surprise these titles sell so low, even the Publishing company can’t be making any money at these numbers?
Shame to see The Last Broadcast (Archaia/Boom) debut so relatively low. It’s not the best thing I’ve ever read or anything, but I do like it so far. Lumberjanes meanwhile I expected to do a lot better, there’s been a lot of hype around it and the book is REALLY good. Lastly I gotta say the endless drops on Adventure Time are beginning to worry me. Not sure why that is, the quality hasn’t dropped at all since the start, there’s a reason they won an Eisner. Are people just over it after a while?
I really don’t get why EAST OF WEST is losing a thousand copies a month. This series is some of Hickman’s best work yet and Nick Dragotta has been absolutely killing it.
Ah, well. Here’s hoping HBO or Showtime will pick up the television rights and give this epic saga the audience it deserves…
The dip on Rocket Girl #5 was frustrating. Although it’s not reflected in these estimates (due to reorders, int’l, &c), #4 was actually higher total sales than #3. And all the issues have sold out very quickly, and anecdotally there doesn’t seem to be copies left on retailers’ shelves. RG #5 sold out just as quick as previous issues, so the drop was puzzling. Although maybe ‘puzzling’ is the wrong word since these ostensibly odd things happening in the Direct Market are never a big surprise.
We hoped #4/#5 would start a bit of a rebound. Of note: #4 was re-FOC’d. Image was initially concerned that would hurt sales, but there was a countervailing publicity push to highlight the previous sellouts. It all worked–the new FOC was much higher than initial orders and the first FOC. But by #5 it was apparently all forgotten! I think a lesson for creator-owned is that you have to be relentless with pushing info to retailers.
#6 is going to be important. Hopefully we’ll bump sales up, post Vol 1 TPB. But with all channels, we’re banked through issue #10 where we’re making as much as a our M/DC rates. We’ll be able to clear $600/page (split commeasurate with M/DC rates for script/pencils/inks/colors) for 200 pages. No small feat, considering we retain ownership of the property. Beyond that we’ll have to see.
And I see the Harvey Awards were just announced.
A number of the titles selling *below* 300 are nominated for awards.
Strange how that is.
Great to see Godzilla selling well (probably because of the awesome movie!).
Richard Starkings must be rich, because he’s been producing The Elephantmen for years now, hardly ever in the top 300, but the quality of writing and artwork hasn’t wavered….Thank You Mr. Starkings for making something you love….I love it too!!
Won’t be surprised if Valiant calls it quits within the next 6 months, and puts the rights to it’s characters up for sale. They tried, they failed, I think they’ll move on….
You are right about Caliban; it reminds me of Event Horizon as well, hopefully a movie in the future? Either way, great horror series….
Sadly, a nice chunk of my pull list lives in that “barely hanging on” section: Elephantmen, Suicide Risk, Sixth Gun, etc. I don’t know how they do keep managing to put out books, I’m just glad they do.
IDW has announced that Ghostbusters is ending with issue #20. This really bums me out because it was by far my favorite series. And the sales on other books I buy, Six Million Dollar Man, Flash Gordon, and Nightbreed, don’t fill me with much confidence. I fear my reading list is going to be getting smaller. :-(
The Bunker has been worth purchasing, I hope it finds more readers.
Valiant is selling pretty well for a small publisher. I’m not sure why they should ‘close’ or why they ‘failed’.
I’d probably be selling 3x our current numbers of Rocket Girl if it wasn’t for the foul language in it. Swap those “Shit!”s for “!@#$” and it becomes a fantastic all-ages title, instead of a PG-13 title.
While it may not matter too much in the bigger markets, here in small-to-medium town America it can make a big difference to a parent whether there’s swearing or not.
Sad to see Valiant struggling so much. They put out top-quality product, especially their lovely deluxe edition hardcovers. I still read most of their titles and they are mostly excellent (and even some of the lesser titles are at least good).
I buy all the Valiant books and the Dynamite Gold Key books also Flash Gordon. I hate that their numbers are low but I can understand to an extent with Valiant because the characters in the books are “shades of grey” and they can be hard to root for especially if you’re used to Marvel and DC’s heroes who may be flawed but are good at their core. You really don’t get that with Valiant’s character lineup. I’m especially bummed with Dynamite’s numbers because Magnus and Flash Gordon are two books that I’ve really enjoyed alot so far.
Dynamite and the Burroughs estate apparently just came to an agreement regarding the Warlord of Mars comics, which will now allow Dynamite to use John Carter of Mars as the title. So I would imagine they’re waiting to relaunch a new series with that name, rather than just give up on the license & waste those negotiations.
When is Fatale meant to finishing?
@Blue – IDW are doing a ghostbusters & ninja turtles team up one shot or mini by the same creative team as the ghostbusters ongoing the month after it finishes.
@James: The final issue of Fatale is #24, in stores very soon…
When did Valiant’s Rai premiere? June? I’m going to miss Prophet. Me and apparently 4,000 other people. That’s interesting about the 12k mark being the same as working for the Big Two. That seems like it should be a very attainable mark but a lot of these books are selling less than I’d ever have guessed. To a lot of Indie books, proportionately, sell more trades than Marvel and DC? They seem like books that typically read better in book form (though I still buy the singles).
thanks dave.
I also wish A Voice In The Dark in the Valiant books were doing better. Leaving DC comics behind when Nu52 wasn’t for me allowed me to try out more indie books and I’ll be so cross if they don’t make it. Also: Flash Gordon is an awesome book.
