A triumphant return for Fathom, albeit one backed by a price-promotion, and a full price relaunch for Red Sonja join Matt Fraction’s Satellite Sam as the big debuts this month, and East of West and Lazarus cement their places in the upper part of the chart. Elsewhere are a clutch of strong mid-level launches, and a slightly worrying series of drops for Valiant.

141 indie books charted this month, down on last month’s 154. The bottom book sold 5,317, up on last month’s 4,277. They sold approximately 1,699,572 in total, down on last month’s 1,714,313. Average sales are 12,053 per book, well up on last month’s 11,131. UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

Out of the 141 books, 25 went up in sales and 98 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.

Image continue as top dog of the indie publishers, with an 6.56% dollar share and a 6.79% market share, while IDW have a 6.09% dollar share and 4.53% market share, Dark Horse have a 5.43% dollar share and a 4.61% market share, Dynamite have a 2.54% dollar share and 2.76% market share and Boom! have a 2.20% dollar share and 2.25% market share.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

Here’s this month’s top twenty indie graphic novels.

2. Avatar Last Airbender TP Vol 5 - 7,655
3. Saga TP Vol 2 - 7,329
4. Saga TP Vol 1 - 5,959
9. Invincible TP Vol 18 Death of Everyone - 4,157

55. Walking Dead TP Vol 2 Miles Behind Us - 1,714
57. Star Wars Agent of the Empire TP Vol 2 - 1,648
59. Creepy Presents Steve Ditko HC - 1,622

Those Avatar Last Airbender books are doing better and better every volume, while just behind the two Saga trades are still selling gangbusters. Image have a good month aside from Saga and usual clutch of Walking Dead collections, with new Invincible, Revival and Prophet books doing well. IDW, Archaia and Boom see one apiece, the new Locke & Key, Mouse Guard and the first Bravest Warriors collections respectively. Dark Horse score a few Star Wars trades, a collection of Steve Ditko’s Warren work and new BPRD and Axe Cop books. That just leaves a couple of manga tiles to round things up.

12. The Walking Dead (Image)

07/2008: The Walking Dead #50 – 27,691
07/2009: The Walking Dead #63 – 24,001
07/2010: The Walking Dead #75 – 33,079
07/2011: The Walking Dead #87 – 32,126
07/2012: The Walking Dead #100 – 388,038

====

08/2012: The Walking Dead #101 – 51,732 (-85.9%)
09/2012: The Walking Dead #102 – 53,337 (+3.1%)
10/2012: The Walking Dead #103 – 74,378 (+39.4%)
10/2012: The Walking Dead Michone Special – 49,930 (60,633)
11/2012: The Walking Dead #104 – 57,456 (-22.8%)
12/2012: The Walking Dead #105 – 57,781 (+0.6%)
01/2013: The Walking Dead #106 – 70,526 (+22.1%)
02/2013: The Walking Dead #107 – 63,575 (-9.9%)
02/2013: The Walking Dead The Governor Special – 51,355
03/2013: The Walking Dead #108 – 67,423 (+6.1%)
04/2013: The Walking Dead #109 – 90,362 (+34.0%)
05/2013: The Walking Dead #110 – 76,455 (-15.4%)
06/2013: The Walking Dead #111 – 74,857 (-2.1%)
07/2013: The Walking Dead #112 – 72,975 (-2.5%)

Just the one cover this month (through Diamond at least) and sales are staying above seventy thousand for the whole arc so far. Now it’s just waiting to see what new sales records will be broken by the upcoming All Out War story.

28. All New Fathom (Aspen)

07/2011: Fathom Vol 4 #1 – 9,289
07/2012: –

====

08/2012: –
09/2012: Fathom Vol 4 #7 – 5,303 (-8.1%)
10-11/2012: –
12/2012: Fathom Vol 4 #8 – 5,414 (+2.1%)
01-04/2013: –
05/2013: Fathom Vol 4 #9 – 5,210 (-3.8%)
06/2013: –
07/2013: All New Fathom #1 – 54,379 (+904.2%)

Unsurprisingly Aspen’s flagship book posts the best figures of the dollar book promotion yet. I would think Aspen are hoping this won’t see quite as big a drop as the second issues of the other books that have launched this year, all of which have dropped to around five thousand copies.

42. East of West (Image)

03/2013: East of West #1 – 49,518 (64,284)
04/2013: East of West #2 – 41,838 (-15.5%)
05/2013: –
06/2013: East of West #3 – 39,441 (-5.7%)
07/2013: East of West #4 – 43,228 (+9.6%)

Going from strength to strength, I suspect this is outperforming even Image’s expectations.

48. Star Wars (Dark Horse)

01/2013: Star Wars #1 – 39,663 (63,410)
02/2013: Star Wars #2 – 46,063 (+16.1%)
03/2013: Star Wars #3 – 45,522 (-1.2%)
04/2013: Star Wars #4 – 45,019 (-1.1%)
05/2013: Star Wars #5 – 44,310 (-1.6%)
06/2013: Star Wars #6 – 42,806 (-3.4%)
07/2013: Star Wars #7 – 41,611 (-2.8%)

Slowly dropping, but still doing very well indeed.

66. My Little Pony (IDW)

11/2012: – My Little Pony #1 – 80,128 (95,384)
12/2012: – My Little Pony #2 – 39,841 (-50.3%)
01/2013: –
02/2013: – My Little Pony #3 – 43,579 (+9.4%)
02/2013: – MLP #1 & #2 Hot Topic Pack – 8,988
03/2013: – My Little Pony #4 – 41,541 (-4.7%)
03/2013: – My Little Pony #5 – 36,354 (-12.5%)
04/2013: – My Little Pony #6 – 33,903 (-6.7%)
05/2013: – My Little Pony #7 – 32,188 (-5.1%)
06/2013: – My Little Pony #8 – 33,114 (+2.9%)
06/2013: – My Little Pony Color Me Treasury Ed – 4,810
07/2013: – My Little Pony #9 – 35,153 (+6.2%)

Increasing for the second month in a row, MLP has been a solid smash. Makes you wonder why it took this long for someone to publish a comic again.

76. Satellite Sam (Image)

07/2013: Satellite Sam #1 – 32,452

Matt Fraction returns to his indie roots for a new mystery book set around a fifties sci-fi show, beautifully illustrated by Howard Chaykin. That’s a good launch number for a black and white comic.

79. Red Sonja (Dynamite)

07/2008: Red Sonja #35 – 15,523
07/2009: Red Sonja #46 – 11,993
07/2010: –
07/2011: –
07/2012: Red Sonja #67 – 6,515

08/2012: Red Sonja #68 – 6,428 (-1.3%)
09/2012: –
10/2012: Red Sonja #69 – 6,176 (-3.9%)
10/2012: Red Sonja #70 – 6,103 (-1.2%)
11/2012: Red Sonja #71 – 6,048 (-0.9%)
12/2012: Red Sonja #72 – 5,856 (-3.2%)
01/2013: –
02/2013: Red Sonja #73 – 5,546 (-5.3%)
03/2013: –
04/2013: Red Sonja #74 – 5,449 (-1.7%)
05/2013: Red Sonja #75 – 7,072 (+29.8%)
05/2013: Red Sonja #76 – 5,272 (-25.5%)
06/2013: Red Sonja #77 – 5,212 (-1.1%)
07/2013: Red Sonja #1 – 30,561 (+486.4%)

The arrival of Gail Simone on writing duties, plus a relaunch, push sales higher than they’ve been since issue eleven of the previous series. I’d expect a big drop next month, but it should remain in the mid-teens for a while. I think there may still be one issue of the old series to come yet.

93. Lazarus (Image)

05/2013: Lazarus #1 – 48,030
07/2013: Lazarus #2 – 27,143 (-43.5%)

A pretty big drop, but I think it’s probably been a bit under-ordered. I expect a bit of a rebound next month.

103. My Little Pony Micro Series (IDW)

02/2013: Twilight Sparkle #1 – 34,435
03/2013: Rainbow Dash #1 – 25,473 (-26.0%)
04/2013: Rarity #1 – 23,338 (-8.4%)
05/2013: Fluttershy #1 – 22,489 (-3.6%)
06/2013: Pinkie Pie #1 – 25,219 (+12.1%)
07/2013: Applejack #1 – 24,350 (-3.5%)

The last of the spotlight books, but doubtless there’ll be another spin-off to replace it soon.

111. True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (Dark Horse)

06/2013: True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #1 – 42,613
07/2013: True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #2 – 22,401 (-47.43%)

Another big-dropping second issue, but then the first did have a lot of variants.

114. Ten Grand (Image)

05/2013: Ten Grand #1 – 57,216
06/2013: Ten Grand #2 – 29,241 (-48.9%)
07/2013: Ten Grand #3 – 21,858 (-25.5%)

That’s quite a big third-issue drop, evidently this still has a while to go before finding its sales level.

116. Adventure Time Candy Capers (Boom!)

07/2013: Adventure Time Candy Capers #1 – 21,587

117. Adventure Time Fiona & Cake (Boom!)

12/2012: Fiona & Cake #1 – 20,290 (27,934)
02/2013: Fiona & Cake #2 – 20,810 (+2.6%)
03/2013: Fiona & Cake #3 – 21,333 (+2.5%)
04/2013: Fiona & Cake #4 – 20,760 (-2.7%)
05/2013: Fiona & Cake #5 – 21,646 (+4.3%)
06/2013: –
07/2013: Fiona & Cake #6 – 21,493 (-0.7%)

118, 137. Adventure Time (Boom!)

07/2012: Adventure Time #6 – 26,019

====

08/2012: Adventure Time #7 – 19,423 (-1.7%)
09/2012: Adventure Time #8 – 19,755 (+1.7%)
10/2012: Adventure Time #9 – 20,636 (+4.5%)
11/2012: Adventure Time #10 – 23,656 (+14.6%)
12/2012: Adventure Time Cover Showcase – 7,478
01/2013: Adventure Time #11 – 10,980 (-53.6%)
01/2013: Adventure Time #12 – 20,407 (+85.9%)
02/2013: Adventure Time #13 – 22,474 (+10.1%)
03/2013: Adventure Time #14 – 22,165 (-1.4%)
04/2013: Adventure Time #15 – 21,682 (-2.2%)
05/2013: Adventure Time #16 – 21,659 (-0.1%)
05/2013: Adventure Time Annual #1 – 20,975
06/2013: Adventure Time #17 – 20,860 (-3.7%)
07/2013: Adventure Time #18 – 21,071 (+1.0%)
07/2013: Adventure Time Summer Special 2013 – 19,182

A new spin-off featuring the cute but creepy Peppermint Butler heads this month’s Adventure Time offerings, all of which are selling very close to each other. If you get one AT title, you probably buy them all.

119. Sheltered (Image)

07/2013: Sheltered #1 – 21,055

Lord of the Flies done survivalist-style, as a new arrival to a survivalist community is hunted after the leader’s charismatic son leads an uprising against the adults. It’s pretty good, but appears to have benefited from the Image first issue hype. I think we’ll see a sizable drop next issue.

122. Buffy TVS (Dark Horse)

07/2008: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #16 – 82,031
07/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #26 – 55,393
07/2012: Buffy TVS Season 9 #11 – 27,490

====

08/2012: Buffy TVS Season 9 #12 – 26,569 (-3.4%)

10/2012: Buffy TVS Season 9 #14 – 25,577 (-1.1%)

01/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #17 – 23,219 (-2.8%)
02/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #18 – 22,530 (-3.0%)
03/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #19 – 22,424 (-0.5%)
04/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #20 – 21,901 (-2.3%)
05/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #21 – 21,701 (-0.9%)
06/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #22 – 21,194 (-2.3%)
07/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #23 – 20,768 (-2.0%)

Drawing to the end of the season.

136. Grimm Fairy Tales Oz (Zenescope)

07/2013: GFT Oz #1 – 19,237

I believe these might be Zenescope’s biggest first month sales ever, quite impressive. They will drop next issue, but this is very good indeed.

146. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW)

07/2012: TMNT #12 – 18,789

====

08/2012: TMNT #13 – 18,342 (-2.4%)
09/2012: TMNT #14 – 17,682 (-3.6%)
10/2012: TMNT #15 – 17,591 (-3.6%)
10/2012: TMNT Annual 2012 – 16,274
11/2012: TMNT #16 – 17,140 (-2.6%)
12/2012: TMNT #17 – 16,703 (-2.5%)
01/2013: –
02/2013: TMNT #18 – 16,172 (-3.2%)
02/2013: TMNT #19 – 16,125 (-0.3%)
03/2013: TMNT #20 – 16,084 (-0.3%)
04/2013: TMNT #21 – 20,659 (+28.4%)
05/2013: TMNT #22 – 27,759 (+34.4%)
06/2013: TMNT #23 – 17,772 (-36.0%)
07/2013: TMNT #24 – 16,484 (-7.2%)

Dropping right back down to where it was before Kevin Eastman’s issue.

139. Ghosted (Image)

07/2013: Ghosted #1 – 17,782

A new ongoing with a familiar theme, the master thief assembling a team for a heist. In this case though, they’re stealing a ghost, and half the team don’t even believe in ghosts. The excellent Goran Sudzuka provides art, and this is a pretty decent launch figure.

141. Quantum & Woody (Valiant)

07/2013: Quantum & Woody #1 – 17,622

A relaunch for one of my favourite nineties comic books. Tom fowler’s art is great, and it tries hard, but it’s not really the same comic. Good debut sales though.

145. X-Files Season 10 (IDW)

06/2013: X-Files Season 10 #1 – 24,270
07/2013: X-Files Season 10 #2 – 16,729 (-31.1%)

Not too bad a second-issue drop, and both issues have gone into third printings, so obviously there’s an appetite for new Mulder & Scully.

148. Sex (Image)

03/2013: Sex #1 – 23,630 (29,298)
04/2013: Sex #2 – 21,342 (-9.7%)
05/2013: Sex #3 – 20,509 (-3.9%)
06/2013: Sex #4 – 17,938 (-12.5%)
07/2013: Sex #5 – 15,996 (-10.8%)

Still dropping quite quickly, although this issue’s fairly graphic depictions of the title subject might provoke some more interest.

149. Star Wars Legacy (Dark Horse)

03/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #1 – 21,600
04/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #2 – 16,384 (-24.1%)
05/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #3 – 16,497 (+0.7%)
06/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #4 – 16,147 (-2.1%)
07/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #5 – 15,854 (-1.8%)

Slowly dropping, but it looks like this is going to stay ongoing rather than go to a series of minis like most of the other SW books.

150. Spawn (Image)

07/2008: Spawn #180 – 19,188
07/2009: Spawn #193 – 20,293
07/2010: Spawn #198 – 17,985
07/2011: Spawn #209 – 13,964
07/2012: Spawn #221 – 15,801

====

08/2012: Spawn #222 – 18,336 (+16.0%)
09/2012: Spawn #223 – 21,965 (+19.8%)
10/2012: Spawn #224 – 17,759 (-19.1%)
11/2012: Spawn #225 – 26,872 (+51.3%)
01/2013: Spawn #226 – 16,814 (-37.4%)
01/2013: Spawn #227 – 17,172 (+2.1%)
02/2013: Spawn #228 – 16,343 (-4.8%)
03/2013: Spawn #229 – 16,355 (+0.1%)
04/2013: Spawn #230 – 15,994 (-2.2%)
05/2013: Spawn #231 – 16,502 (+3.2%)
06/2013: Spawn #232 – 16,077 (-2.7%)
07/2013: Spawn #233 – 15,701 (-2.3%)

Back into a slow decline, but still a good few thousand above where it was a couple of years ago.

160. Invincible (Image)

07/2008: Invincible #51 – 15,062
07/2009: Invincible #64 – 15,535

12/2012: Invincible #98 – 16,139 (+10.9%)
12/2012: Invincible #99 – 15,566 (-3.6%)
01/2013: Invincible #100 – 44,985 (+189.0%)
02/2013: –
03/2013: Invincible #101 – 15,540 (-65.5%)
04/2013: Invincible #102 – 15,249 (-1.9%)
05/2013: –
06/2013: Invincible #103 – 15,072 (-1.2%)
07/2013: Invincible #104 – 14,733 (-2.2%)

Returning to pre-100 levels.

162. Star Wars Darth Vader (Dark Horse)

07/2012: Ghost Prison #3 – 16,332 (-3.1%)

====

08/2012: Ghost Prison #4 – 15,850 (-3.0%)
09/2012: Ghost Prison #5 – 15,455 (-2.5%)
12/2012: Purge Tyrants Fist #1 – 15,546 (+5.9%)
12/2012: Purge Tyrants Fist #2 – 13,429 (-13.6%)
01-03/2013: –
04/2013: Ninth Assassin #1 – 17,278 (+28.7%)
05/2013: Ninth Assassin #2 – 15,322 (-11.3%)
06/2013: Ninth Assassin #3 – 14,806 (-3.4%)
07/2013: Ninth Assassin #4 – 14,650 (-3.4%)

Well, the drops are consistent, anyway. Still, this isn’t a bad number for a Star
Wars book historically.

163, 188. Uber (Avatar)

04/2013: Uber #0 – 10,849
05/2013: Uber #1 – 16,109 (+32.6%)
05/2013: Uber #0 Enhanced Edition – 5,084
06/2013: Uber #2 – 16,160 (+0.3%)
07/2013: Uber #3 – 14,594 (-9.7%)
07/2013: Uber #4 – 12,030 (-17.6%)

Two issues this month, the first takes a bit of a fall, the second a far larger one. Gillen admitted that the early issues (which were written 3 or 4 years ago) weren’t up to his current standards, and it looks like some of his audience haven’t stuck around to see it get better, which it certainly has.

165. TMNT New Animated Adventures (IDW)

07/2013: TMNT New Animated Adventures #1 – 14,397

A perfectly decent number for the inevitable animated spin-off.

166, 179. Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie)

07/2008: Sonic #190 – 7,241
07/2009: Sonic #202 – 8,193
07/2010: –
07/2011: –
07/2012: Sonic #238 – 8,976

====

Two issues this month, as sales spike on the anniversary issue and drop off a little, but still way above normal, for the finale of When Worlds Collide.

06/2013: –
07/2013: Thief of Thieves #15 – 14,013 (-17.3%)

A pretty sizable drop, right in the middle of Andy Diggle’s arc. Possibly a lot of readers jumped off at the end of the last arc, and retailers have only just realised.

168. X-O Manowar (Valiant)

07/2013: X-O Manowar #15 – 13,997 (+5.5%)

A nice increase for no apparent reason other than genuine popularity. This is however, Valiant’s last bit of good news this month.

169. Star Wars Dark Times (Dark Horse)

02/2013: Fire Carrier #1 – 14,308 (+10.1%)
03/2013: Fire Carrier #2 – 13,077 (-8.6%)

06/2013: Fire Carrier #5 – 12,145 (+0.1%)
07/2013: Spark Remains #1 – 13,990 (+15.2%)

A decent increase for the new arc, not far below where the last series started.

06/2013: Revival #11 – 13,536 (-17.0%)
07/2013: Revival #12 – 13,948 (+3.0%)

A small rebound after last month’s big drop.

06/2013: Angel & Faith #23 – 13,668 (-1.6%)

Standard attrition.

06/2013: –
07/2013: Chew #35 – 12,818 (-0.1%)

As ever, ultra-stable. Over the last year this book has sold within a range of 433 copies, I think that’s the most stable book on the market.

180. Doctor Who Prisoners of Time (IDW)

Outselling the parent title, but still dropping a bit quickly.

06/2013: –
07/2013: Rocketeer/ Spirit Pulp Friction #1 – 12,091 (+36.1%)

A reasonable increase, and a beautiful comic book, Paul Smith’s first interior work in years. Sadly, he’s only managed the one issue, being replaced for the rest of the series.

191. The Bounce (Image)

05/2013: The Bounce #1 – 24,259
06/2013: The Bounce #2 – 16,125 (-34.0%)
07/2013: The Bounce #3 – 11,436 (-29.1%)

Ouch, a pretty heavy third-issue drop, obviously this still has some way to go before finding its level. Enormously fun book this, probably Joe Casey’s purest superhero book.

07/2013: Doctor Who Vol. 3 #11 – 11,425 (+11.6%)

A good increase, possibly partly down to the increased publicity around the new Doctor.

Another little increase for the last month of the big crossover.

199. The Shadow/ Green Hornet (Dynamite)

07/2013: Shadow Green Hornet Dark Nights #1 – 11,203

Masks redux, as Dynamite’s two biggest pulp books meet one-on-one. Not a great launch number, really.

07/2013: Villain Micro Series #4 – 11,031 (+0.1%)

A small increase, this month’s star being the mutated fox, Alopex. I’ve also just noticed it was drawn by Ross Campbell, so I’ll have try and track down a copy…

07/2013: Army of Darkness vs Hack Slash #1 – 10,923

A couple of months after ending the regular series, Tim Seeley makes a return to the world of Cassie Hack, as she meets boomstick-man Ash for the first time (I think?).

07/2013: Harbinger #14 – 10,709 (-17.2%)

The first of several Valiant titles that take a large tumble this month. I’m not quite sure why this has happened, but it’ll be worth watching over the next couple of months, I think.

07/2013: Archer & Armstrong #11 – 9,880 (-25.4%)

Another big Valiant dropper, this the worst of the lot. Again, no specific reason that I can see, it’s probably my favourite of the bunch.

217, 220. Mysterious Strangers (Oni)

07/2013: Mysterious Strangers #1 – 9,857
07/2013: Mysterious Strangers #2 – 9,805 (-0.5%)

Oni have added Mysterious to their original name, The Strangers, after Marvel objected due to one of the old Ultraverse titles bearing that name. This is a really good number for this quirky retro adventure book, especially considering the first issue was a reprint of this year’s FCBD offering.

A new mini-series, I think telling the story from before the games.

07/2013: Massive #14 – 8,983 (-4.1%)

A slightly larger drop, after six months of relative stability. No reason to worry at the moment, unless things speed up.

Still well above the last series, but falling quite quickly.

237. Catalyst Comix (Dark Horse)

07/2013: Catalyst Comix #1 – 8,745

A relaunch of the old Comic’s Greatest World characters, written by Joe Casey and illustrated by a swathe of indie artists, in a similar style to Prophet. Not a great launch figure, but not too bad.

07/2013: Dawn Swordmaster’s Daughter – 8,427

The firat new Dawn comic for 3 years or so, perfectly reasonable numbers.

06/2013: The Uncanny #1 – 13,192
07/2013: The Uncanny #2 – 8,228 (-37.6%)

Slightly on the high side for a second-issue drop, but still at an okay level.

Two issues this month, things look to be settling down.

245. The Owl (Dynamite)

07/2013: The Owl #1 – 8,010

Another one of Dynamite’s public domain characters, he reappeared in Project Superpowers and as with so many of those characters is now getting a try-out in his own series. Not sure if this is a strong enough launch number for it to survive very long.

247. Day Man (Boom!)

07/2013: Day Man #1 – 7,968

The first interior artwork in a long time from the amazing Brian Stelfreeze. I would have said this was under-ordered even before it was optioned, I expect a bit of a sales increase next issue now that it has been.

07/2013: Danger Girl Trinity #4 – 7,790 (-4.3%)

The last issue of the current mini-series, somewhat below the GI Joe crossover, but a new mini will follow so IDW are obviously giving it a bit of a go.

250. Captain Midnight (Dark Horse)

06/2013: Captain Midnight #0 – 6,290
07/2013: Captain Midnight #1 – 7,783 (+19.2%)

A reasonable increase for the first new issue of Dark Horse’s hero out of time.

03/2013: Judge Dredd Year One #1 – 13,013
04/2013: Judge Dredd Year One #2 – 9,069 (-30.3%)
05/2013: –
06/2013: Judge Dredd Year One #3 – 8,251 (-9.0%)
07/2013: Judge Dredd Year One #4 – 7,707 (-6.6%)

The last part of this mini-series, ending on an alright number, if not spectacular.

253. Transformers Monstrosity (IDW)

06/2013: Transformers Monstrosity #1 – 8,562
07/2013: Transformers Monstrosity #2 – 7,583 (-11.4%)

A pretty good second-issue drop for the digital-first series.

254. Garth Ennis' Red Team (Dynamite)

02/2013: Garth Ennis Red Team #1 – 16,724
03/2013: Garth Ennis Red Team #2 – 9,941 (-40.6%)

06/2013: Garth Ennis Red Team #3 – 8,645 (-13.0%)

06/2013: Bravest Warriors #9 – 7,850 (-3.6%)
07/2013: Bravest Warriors #10 – 7,496 (-4.5%)

Larger drops than are comfortable at this point in the run, but still one of Boom’s most reliable series, and always a fun read.

256. The Strain (Dark Horse)

07/2012: The Strain #6 – 5,742

====

08/2012: The Strain #7 – 5,376 (-6.4%)

03-06/2013: –
07/2013: The Strain The Fall #1 – 7,474 (+76.8%)

A good increase for the second arc of this adaptation of Guillermo Del Toro’s vampire series.

257. Helheim (Oni)

03/2013: Helheim #1 – 11,877
04/2013: Helheim #2 – 10,256 (-13.6%)

06/2013: Helheim #4 – 8,432 (-16.6%)
07/2013: Helheim #5 – 7,457 (-11.6%)

The penultimate issue of this run, not settled down but Oni’s second best-selling title currently.

07/2013: Crossed Badlands #32 – 7,399 (+1.0%)

Fairly stable at the moment.

259. GI Joe Real American Hero (IDW)

07/2012: Real American Hero #180 – 8,845

====

08/2012: Real American Hero #181 – 8,525 (-3.6%)

06/2013: Real American Hero #191 – 7,407 (-1.9%)
07/2013: Real American Hero #192 – 7,361 (-0.6%)

Very solid, as usual.

260. Thumbprint (IDW)

06/2013: Thumbprint #1 – 11,185
07/2013: Thumbprint #2 – 7,278 (-34.9%)

Slightly on the high side, but a relatively average second-issue drop.

261. Ghostbusters (IDW)

07/2012: Ghostbusters #11 – 7,809

====

08/2012: Ghostbusters #12 – 7,567 (-3.1%)

06/2013: Ghostbusters #5 – 7,620 (-3.2%)
07/2013: Ghostbusters #6 – 7,253 (-4.8%)

This isn’t far off where the last series ended sales-wise, and at this rate it could drop below that level in the next issue or two.

262, 275. Warlord of Mars (Dynamite)

07/2012: Warlord of Mars #19 – 10,002

====

08/2012: Warlord of Mars #20 – 9,889 (-1.1%)

07/2013: Warlord of Mars #27 – 6,876 (-4.9%)

Two issues this month, both dropping quite swiftly.

264. Grimm Fairy Tales (Zenescope)

02/2013: Grimm Fairy Tales #82 – 6,483 (+5.4%)
03/2013: Grimm Fairy Tales #83 – 6,221 (-4.0%)
04/2013: Grimm Fairy Tales #84 – 6,284 (+1.0%)

06/2013: Grimm Fairy Tales #86 – 6,231 (-4.1%)
06/2013: Grimm Fairy TalesAnnual 2013 – 5,396 (-12.1%)
07/2013: Grimm Fairy Tales #87 – 7,201 (+15.6%)

A big increase, for no specific reason that I can see. Maybe an attractive variant cover?

265. Witchblade (Image)

07/2012: Witchblade #158 – 8,556

====

08/2012: Witchblade #159 – 8,598 (+0.5%)
09/2012: Witchblade #160 – 8,202 (-4.6%)
10/2012: Witchblade #161 – 8,985 (+9.5%)
11/2012: –
12/2012: Witchblade #162 – 8,098 (-9.9%)
01/2013: Witchblade #163 – 7,655 (-5.5%)
02/2013: –
03/2013: Witchblade #164 – 7,670 (+0.2%)
04/2013: Witchblade #165 – 7,262 (-5.2%)
04/2013: Witchblade Day o/t Outlaw – 5,636
05/2013: Witchblade #166 – 7,425 (+2.2%)
06/2013: Witchblade #167 – 7,329 (-1.3%)
07/2013: Witchblade #168 – 7,176 (-2.1%)

Tim Seeley’s penultimate issue, ahead of Ron Marz’s return. Holding relatively steady.

266. X (Dark Horse)

04/2013: X #0 – 7,502
05/2013: X #1 – 11,071 (+47.6%)
06/2013: X #2 – 7,797 (-29.6%)
07/2013: X #3 – 7,172 (-8.0%)

An average to good third-issue drop, not a great seller but DH don’t seem to be expecting huge sales on these CGW series.

267. Judge Dredd Classics (IDW)

07/2013: Judge Dredd Classics #1 – 7,151

Re-colored for the US market, starting out with Bolland on Block Mania, heading into the Apocalypse War.

268. Dream Merchant (Image)

05/2013: Dream Merchant #1 – 14,024
06/2013: Dream Merchant #2 – 8,930 (-36.3%)
07/2013: Dream Merchant #3 – 7,141 (-20.0%)

Not slowing down too much, it’s lost almost 50% of it’s audience in two issues.

269. Last of Us (Dark Horse)

04/2013: Last Of Us American Dreams #1 – 6,032
05/2013: Last Of Us American Dreams #2 – 4,991 (-17.3%)
06/2013: Last Of Us American Dreams #3 – 5,014 (+0.5%)
07/2013: Last Of Us American Dreams #4 – 7,138 (+42.0%)

A decent-sized boost, but I can’t help feel that Dark Horse have uncharacteristically dropped the ball on this project. It was released too early to take advantage of the hype around the game, and as I’ve said before, they’re waiting too long (October) to release the trade. The first issue should have been released concurrently with the game, and the trade should have been released with the fourth issue. Maybe bi-weekly.

270. GI Joe Cobra Files (IDW)

07/2012: Cobra #15 – 7,619

====

08/2012: Cobra #16 – 7,328 (-3.8%)
09/2012: Cobra #17 – 7,112 (-2.9%)
10/2012: Cobra #18 – 6,873 (-3.4%)
11/2012: Cobra #19 – 6,668 (-3.0%)
12/2012: Cobra #20 – 6,589 (-1.2%)
01/2012: Cobra #21 – 6,375 (-3.2%)
04/2013: Cobra Files #1 – 13,231 (+107.5%)
05/2013: Cobra Files #2 – 7,769 (-41.3%)
06/2013: Cobra Files #3 – 7,407 (-4.7%)
07/2013: Cobra Files #4 – 7,097 (-4.2%)

If this doesn’t slow down it’ll be where it was before the relaunch very soon.

271. Spongebob Comics (United Plankton)

07/2012: Spongebob Comics #10 – 8,092

====

08/2012: Spongebob Comics #11 – 7,972 (-1.5%)

10/2012: Spongebob Comics #13 – 7,866 (+1.3%)
11/2012: Spongebob Comics #14 – 7,629 (-3.0%)

06/2013: Annual Giant Swimtacular #1 – 6,137
07/2013: Spongebob Comics #22 – 7,020 (-0.3%)

Super solid as usual this month.

272. Black Bat (Dynamite)

05/2013: Black Bat #1 – 16,328
06/2013: Black Bat #2 – 8,682 (-46.8%)
07/2013: Black Bat #3 – 7,010 (-19.3%)

Not a particularly healthy looking third-issue drop.

273. Transformers Prime (IDW)

11/2012: Rage o/t Dinobots #1 – 9,613
12/2012: Rage o/t Dinobots #2 – 8,284 (-13.8%)
01/2013: –
02/2013: Rage o/t Dinobots #3 – 7,821 (-5.6%)

06/2013: Beast Hunters #2 – 7,642 (-14.9%)
07/2013: Beast Hunters #3 – 7,004 (-8.3%)

Nothing surprising here.

274. Simpsons Comics (Bongo)

07/2012: Simpsons Comics #192 – 6,917

====

08/2012: L’il Homer #1 – 8,200

10/2012: Maggie #1 – 7,785
10/2012: Simpsons Comics #195 – 6,991 (+1.9%)
11/2012: Simpsons Comics #196 – 6,902 (-1.3%)

02/2013: Professor Frink #1 – 6,395
03/2013: Simpsons Comics #200 – 9,820 (+46.1%)
04/2013: Simpsons Comics #201 – 6,844 (-30.3%)
05/2013: Simpsons Comics #202 – 6,950 (+1.5%)
06/2013: Malevolent Mr Burns #1 – 8,048
06/2013: Simpsons Comics #203 – 6,930 (-0.3%)
07/2013: Simpsons Comics #204 – 6,976 (+0.7%)

Stable.

276. Suicide Risk (Boom!)

05/2013: Suicide Risk #1 – 10,913
06/2013: Suicide Risk #2 – 7,914 (-27.5%)
07/2013: Suicide Risk #3 – 6,864 (-13.3%)

Slowing down but this has got to be Carey’s lowest selling book by quite some way. It’s good though.

277. Robyn Hood (Zenescope)

10/2012: Robyn Hood #1 – 11,330
10/2012: Robyn Hood #2 – 6,963 (-38.5%)
11/2012: Robyn Hood #3 – 6,742 (-3.2%)
12/2012: Robyn Hood #4 – 7,136 (+5.8%)
01/2012: –
02/2013: Robyn Hood #5 – 6,901 (-3.3%)
03-04/2013:

06/2013: Robyn Hood Wanted #2 – 7,116 (-13.7%)
07/2013: Robyn Hood Wanted #3 – 6,864 (-3.5%)

Levelling out.

278. Clive Barker Next Testament (Boom!)

05/2013: Next Testament #1 – 10,797
06/2013: –
07/2013: Next Testament #2 – 6,832 (-36.7%)

It’s always a little depressing when people who used to be considered as sales-juggernauts just don’t seem to be picked up by following generations. The fact that a new project from Clive Barker sells less than seven thousand copies in the US astonishes me.

279. Godzilla (IDW)

07/2012: Godzilla #3 – 9,281

====

08/2012: Godzilla #4 – 8,767 (-5.5%)

03/2013: –
04/2013: Godzilla #11 – 6,905 (-1.2%)
05/2013: Godzilla #12 – 6,782 (-1.8%)
06/2013: Godzilla Rulers of The Earth #1 – 9,813 (+44.7%)
07/2013: Godzilla #13 – 6,741 (-0.6%)

Slightly belatedly the last issue of the previous series creeps out, actually very stable from the last issue. The new series is getting some decent word of mouth though.

 280. Tarot Witch of the Black Rose (Broadsword)

07/2012: Tarot #75 – 7,190

====

08/2012: –
09/2012: Tarot #76 – 6,955 (-3.3%)
10/2012: –
11/2012: Tarot #77 – 7,173 (+3.1%)
12/2012: –
01/2013: Tarot #78 – 6,777 (-5.5%)

04/2013: –

06/2013: –
07/2013: Tarot #81 – 6,707 (-1.3%)

A bit of a drop, but overall solid.

281. Warlord of Mars Dejah Thoris (Dynamite)

01/2013: Dejah Thoris #21 – 6,998 (-7.4%)
02/2013: Dejah Thoris #22 – 7,059 (+0.9%)
03/2013: Dejah Thoris #23 – 6,697 (-5.1%)

06/2013: Dejah Thoris #26 – 6,593 (-1.9%)
07/2013: Dejah Thoris #27 – 6,506 (-1.3%)

Although it sells a bit below the main title, it’s far more stable and is likely to be passed on the way down by that book before too long.

06/2013: –
07/2013: Pathfinder #8 – 6,085 (-3.6%)

Not quite such a big drop this month.

285. Ballistic (Black Mask)

07/2013: Ballistic #1 – 6,048

A new Darrick Robertson book, joined by film-maker Adam Egypt Mortimer. Very much in the style of Warren Ellis, this is a fun gonzo noir sci-fi book.

286. Polarity (Boom!)

04/2013: Polarity #1 – 7,459
05/2013: Polarity #2 – 6,957 (-6.7%)
06/2013: Polarity #3 – 6,436 (-7.5%)
07/2013: Polarity #4 – 6,045 (-6.1%)

The last issue for the moment, but I think this has done reasonably well for Boom.

287. Six Gun Gorilla (Boom!)

06/2013: Six Gun Gorilla #1 – 7,730
07/2013: Six Gun Gorilla #2 – 5,970 (-22.8%)

Not too bad a second-issue drop, and good word of mouth might see a slight rebound next month.

12/2012: Clone #2 – 11,144 (-52.2%)

07/2013: Clone #9 – 5,954 (-6.1%)

Sales continue to fall too quickly.

07/2013: GFT Werewolves Hunger #2 – 5,917 (+10.5%)
07/2013: GFT Werewolves Hunger #3 – 5,473 (-7.5%)

The last two parts of this Unleashed tie-in mini both sell more than the first issue, which has got to be a result.

291. 47 Ronin (Dark Horse)

11/2012: 47 Ronin #1 – 8,488
12/2012: 47 Ronin #2 – 6,101 (-28.1%)
03/2013: 47 Ronin #3 – 6,142 (+0.6%)
05/2013: 47 Ronin #4 – 6,017 (-2.0%)
07/2013: 47 Ronin #5 – 5,825 (-3.2%)

These last four issues have sold in a range of less than 300 copies, which is pretty impressive.

05/2013: Jirni #2 – 5,915 (-83.5%)

07/2013: Jirni #4 – 5,790 (+11.7%)

The first of Aspen’s new titles to rebound a bit, instead of just dropping out of the charts.

293. Grimm Universe (Zenescope)

10/2012: Grimm Universe #1 – 5,220
12/2012: Grimm Universe #2 – ???? (???)

Another increase as this issue ties in to Unleashed.

294. Bubblegun (Aspen)

06/2013: Bubblegun #1 – 28,517
07/2013: Bubblegun #2 – 5,681 (-80.1%)

All of these books have dropped around 80% with the second issue, will this one follow Jirni in increasing, or Legend of the Shadowclan by vanishing from sight.

295. Absolution (Avatar)

07/2013: Absolution Rubicon #1 – 5,631

The first series was four years ago, so this sequel has taken its time to arrive. Author Christos Gage has been kept busy by Marvel, but his creator-owned series is back now. Not exactly set the world on fire though.

296. GFT Demons The Unseen (Zenescope)

06/2013: GFT Demons Unseen #1 – 5,142
07/2013: GFT Demons Unseen #2 – 5,490 (+6.8%)

Another Unleashed tie-in improving on first month sales.

298. Death of Haggard West (First Second)

07/2013: The Death of Haggard West – 5,424

This is a comic-book prequel to Paul Pope’s upcoming and long awaited Battling Boy. I’m a little surprised this didn’t sell more, it was fantastic.

06/2013: Prophet #36 – 5,412 (-2.0%)
07/2013: Prophet #37 – 5,341 (-1.3%)

Holding very steady, fingers crossed it looks likely to be around for a while yet.

300. Bart Simpson Comics (Bongo)

07/2013: Bart Simpson Comics #85 – 5,317 (+1.5%)

Stable.

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. Also, there is the typical formatting issue.

Can we get our printer’s devil to correct the coding and layout?

  2. I’m getting Archer & Armstrong in trades and it makes me sad to see such a huge drop in sales. Valiant is giving next week’s issue a big push (new storyline, I guess) so maybe that will cause an uptick in sales or at lease some stabilization.

  3. That’s such a weird drop for the Valiant titles. Could it be that there were distribution problems with july’s batch of Valiant comics? But then, X-O Manowar went up in sales…

  4. East of west is doing greatm really great. Harldy see a boost of sales witu no varaints coming out the same month

  5. I don’t know if Diamond is releasing the info in a form that can be easily used, but it would be nice to have a snapshot of the long tail at the end. Something of the form “and 82 comics with estimated sales below 5317”.

  6. Judging by East of West’s numbers, it looks like Hickman has found the right combination of ripping off Mark Millar stories and writing crappy, non-sensical Marvel books. (Manhattan Projects regurgitated Millar’s Authority so blatantly, I was able to perfectly guess scenes before they happened.)

The sales on Prophet and Mind MGMT just prove MOF’s point about comics not being a content business.

  7. Its becoming pretty clear these aren’t really Indie comics anymore but “Trade building off most;y Big Two names Comics” who’s Twitter followers help sell perhaps a 2000 issues base for a few issues till they get bored. Maybe “TRADE Industry building Month-to-Month Sales” or “Indie Projects for Big Two Creators that will soon-be-a-trade Month-Month Sales ” are more accurate titles for this section. Buying an issue thinking your supporting the Independent comic scene is a bit of a ruse. Saga clearly looks like its writing for trades these days stretching things along,-Walking Dead style, which dilutes the stories (checking out on that series). Now I have higher hopes for digital making the industry interesting again since the Comixology app is so good and well designed..Maybe next year, or after that. But print is seriously stagnating in the single issue comics realm. Wished I like more than one or two series once in a while. And even then when I see gimmick or a jacked up price, I don’t buy by reflex now.

Comixology Submit is probably more on target being a real independent scene, a random edgy, scene can be bad or strange but feels more exciting and real than this list. Not as “professional” and safe for editors obsessed with protecting their reps by mining the Big Two with safe bets but I’ll prefer that randomness and energy of real independents. I notice Comixology still doesn’t announce them with its Wednesday “New Releases” which is interesting. You have to know to look for it, to know its there. Why they do that? Its puzzling since they get a cut,. Perhaps comics journalists know the real deal. To guess, perhaps to accommodate 2500(?) or so stores out who there get nothing from that scene or to let the 5 same old, same old companies to stay above the charts with any and all public exposure thats out there to assure their future trade sales and digital first choice marketing when that day comes that retailers abandon their shops to the local Nail Salons and Pet Stores. Its hard to figure out , it seems a lot of insider accounting games being played in the small circles of comics and keeping comic buyers in the dark is priority one for all. Customers are just gong to wise up and not buy single issues anymore or just rent them from the library (for free) Or look for real independents in the digital forest, even if they are hidden to accommodate the gatekeepers and establsihment.of the industry. Who can blame them. I’d rather have real comics than real paper.

  8. The Paul Pope and Clive Barker numbers are no surprise; both are selling their work to the wrong market. Pope’s audience is largely made up of people who like sketchbooks. Barker is primarily known as a prose author. I doubt most people in the Wednesday Crowd could name 5 prose novels that came out this year (not including licensed properties like Star Wars or Warhammer). The Wednesday Crowd doesn’t have any use for prose and Barker’s readers aren’t going to comic stores for periodicals.

  9. I really hope the Valiant figures are not right and bounce back….I’m buying most of them and they are excellent, good stories, nice art good quality. Id hate to see them cancelled. Its like a breath of fresh air from the Avengers-Xmen-Bat books out there. (I buy several, but still, some variaty feels good). Crossing my fingers!

  10. Tonyjazz: oh , please, not that excuse. All their first issue has been reprinted at 1$ (1$) and all their first trade have been at 9.99€.

  11. It feels like Valiant numbers might be caused by some shipping problems.

    A) Shadowman, Harbinger and Bloodshot drop by 2000 (17%). Now i could buy last two being dropped by people who got tired of crossover but why would Shadowman lose around same amount of buyers?

    B) A&A drop is massive and looks very strange when last two issues had increases.

    C) There were some angry people about whole Priest not writing Q&W series so maybe some massive boycott? But then it doesn’t make any sense why X-O would actually increase in sales.

  12. I finally dropped X-O Manowar b/c I was tired of paying $4 a pop for a comic where barely anything ever happened and arcs would move at a glacial pace. Pass on that…

  13. “If valiant sold anything for less than $4 a piece, I might have tried them.”

Yeeeaaaaaahhhhh, looking at my pull list/budget and I cut all my Valiant books and I was getting five monthlies from them. Granted, for that matter, I am VERY picky when it comes to a $3.99 monthly.

  14. Hey thanks for the numbers. Sales Charts is my favorite post on this board so I really appreciate the effort. And as my independent pull list continues to overrun the Big 2 I’m enjoying this particular column more and more. Couple of comments. The %-drop for Star Wars Darth Vader wasn’t as severe. Your number should be -1.1%, and maybe a “leveling out” comment. Lazarus is easily my favorite of the new launches. This book is fantastic. For $1 issue jump-on points, I’ve never seen it work as well as it has for Morning Glories. This story is really dense so I consume it in trades, but it is cool to see the monthlies get a boost from the sales gimmick. Regarding America’s Got Powers, I like to see the delays represented by empty month-rows. I know it’s wasted space but it really gets the point across of how late these books are. Bryan Hitch strikes again! Hate to say it but Diggle’s good graces are about to expire. I wasn’t impressed with Snapshot! and Uncanny has quickly settled into standard crook-fair so quickly after a brilliant start. I want Uncanny to be better. Nuts.

  15. Valiant:
Quantum & Woody are now into a third printing.

Unity #1 will be returnable. Has Valiant done that with other titles? Is Diamond hacking a percentage from the list, like they do with similar DC titles?

Or did these titles ship late in the month, and were not reordered in time for those extra copies to make the list?

Were there variants? I see 12 variant covers/offers for Valiant in the latest Previews. (Unity #1, Q&W #5) Most are 1:20 offers.

  16. I am very happy to see the orders on JIRNI from Aspen going up. It is a great book. The all-new FATHOM is outstanding, too. I previously never knew where to start with this book and this issue was the perfect jump on issue. Alex Konat is doing some of the best artwork in comics right now. Everyone should be checking out FATHOM for $1.00 you can’t go wrong.

I think the $1.00 book from Aspen have been very good, but they will need a good trade program to really build on the success of these series.

  17. @Torsten Adair:
    You’re right!
Quantum & Woody #1 is not only in a 3rd print but had FOUR covers, issue #2 had three covers and issue #3 had two covers.
Every issue of Archer & Armstrong had two covers, issue #10 had four covers.
    Is this not affecting things?

  18. I love Godzilla, and am glad the new series is starting off with good numbers. Hopefully, the hype for Godzilla 2014 will help sales.

I’m enjoying Shadowman, and am at a loss for why Valiant’s titles seem to be falling off the map…..
