Walking Dead sees a big rise as expected, while Saga and Buffy sandwich the new Star Wars book, and Invincible’s one hundredth issue. Elsewhere, it’s a good month for all-ages comics, and Image have their usual batch of debuts. Dynamite have a poorer month than usual for sales drops, but a round of relaunches are on the horizon.

131 indie books charted this month, well down on last month’s 155. The bottom book sold 4,257, down on last month’s 4,649. They sold approximately 1,234,559 in total, far down on last month’s 1,543,544. Average sales are 9,424 per book, down on last month’s 9,958. UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

An average month for risers. Out of the 131 books, 19 went up in sales and 98 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.

Image are the top indie publisher for the third month in a row, with an 8.19% dollar share and a 7.45% market share, IDW have a 6.30% dollar share and 3.92% market share, Dark Horse have a 4.55% dollar share and a 3.62% market share, Dynamite have a 2.20% dollar share and 2.13% market share and Boom! have a 1.45% dollar share and 1.55% market share.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

Here’s this month’s top twenty indie graphic novels.

A quiet month for new release

This leaves Walking Dead to dominate the indie chart, with 12 titles this month. Saga charts for the third month in a row, selling almost twice as many copies as last month, which I suspect is down to it going briefly out of print in December, while the first Manhattan Projects and Adventure Time books also make reappearances. The only new titles are the new Invincible collection, a hardcover reprinting some of Paul Pope’s earlier work, a new Star Wars collection, the first Harbinger trade, and the Gil Kane Artist Edition, which, at a cost price of over $120, is by far the biggest dollar-earner this month.

300. Battlefields (Dynamite)

11/2012: Battlefields #1 - 5,863
12/2012: Battlefields #2 - 4,966 (-15.3%)
01/2013: Battlefields #3 - 4,257 (-14.3%)

People just have no taste. Or are waiting for the collection.

299. Hell Yeah (Image)

03/2012: Hell Yeah #1 - 10,908
04/2012: Hell Yeah #2 - 8,161 (-25.2%)
05/2012: Hell Yeah #3 - 7,504 (-8.0%)
06/2012: Hell Yeah #4 - 6,749 (-10.1%)
07-08/2012: -
09/2012: Hell Yeah #5 - 5,872 (-13.0%)
10-12/2012: -
01/2013: Hell Yeah #6 - 4,263 (-27.4%)

Ouch, apparently not the return everyone was waiting for.

298. The Strain (Dark Horse)

01/2012: The Strain #2 - 7,650

====

02/2012: The Strain #3 - 7,384 (-3.5%)
03/2012: The Strain #4 - 6,767 (-8.4%)
04-05/2012:
06/2012: The Strain #5 - 6,054 (-10.5%)
07/2012: The Strain #6 - 5,742 (-5.2%)
08/2012: The Strain #7 - 5,376 (-6.4%)
09/2012: The Strain #8 - 4,977 (-7.4%)
10-11/2012: -
12/2012: The Strain #9 - ???? (???)
01/2013: The Strain #10 - 4,319 (???)

Missing the chart last month, it’s a little puzzling as to why this series has performed so badly that they’ve trimmed it by an issue (it was supposed to be a twelve-parter). Nevertheless a sequel is on the horizon.

295. Savage Dragon (Image)

01/2012: -

====

02/2012: Savage Dragon #178 - 4,684 (-4.9%)
03/2012: -
04/2012: Savage Dragon #179 - 4,614 (-1.5%)
06/2012: Savage Dragon #180 - 4,595 (-0.4%)
07-08/2012: -
09/2012: Savage Dragon #181 - 4,556 (-0.8%)
10/2012: Savage Dragon #182 - ???? (???)
11/2012: Savage Dragon #183 - 4,603 (???)
12/2012: -
01/2013: Savage Dragon #184 - 4,366 (-5.1%)

250 copies dropped is a surprisingly large amount at this point in the chart.

294. Bionic Woman (Dynamite)

04/2012: Bionic Woman #1 - 9,154
05/2012: Bionic Woman #2 - 7,053 (-23.0%)
06-07/2012: -
08/2012: Bionic Woman #3 - 6,565 (-6.9%)
09/2012: Bionic Woman #4 - 5,928 (-9.7%)
10/2012: Bionic Woman #5 - 5,653 (-4.6%)
11/2012: -
12/2012: Bionic Woman #6 - 4,960 (-12.3%)
01/2013: Bionic Woman #7 - 4,393 (-11.4%)

Pretty awful drops, and ending with issue ten (as I was informed by a poster in last month’s comments section).

293. Steed and Mrs Peel (Boom!)

01/2012: Steed and Mrs Peel #1 - 6,937

====

02/2012: Steed and Mrs Peel #2 - 4,945 (-28.7%)
03/2012: Steed and Mrs Peel #3 - 4,921 (-0.5%)
04/2012: Steed and Mrs Peel #4 - 4,723 (-4.0%)
05/2012: Steed and Mrs Peel #5 - ???? (???%)
06/2012: Steed and Mrs Peel #6 - 4,122 (???%)
07/2012: -
08/2012: Steed and Mrs Peel #0 - 7,274 (+76.5%)
09/2012: Steed and Mrs Peel #1 - 6,985 (-4.0%)
10/2012: Steed and Mrs Peel #2 - 5,725 (-18.0%)
11/2012: Steed and Mrs Peel #3 - 5,150 (-10.0%)
12/2012: -
01/2013: Steed and Mrs Peel #4 - 4,491 (-12.8%)

Hmm, despite his successes on Daredevil and Hulk, even Mark Waid can’t sell an Avengers (UK) series.

292, 296. Army of Darkness (Dynamite)

02/2012: Army of Darkness #1 - 9,164
03/2012: Army of Darkness #2 - 7,037 (-23.2%)
04/2012: Army of Darkness #3 - 6,382 (-9.3%)
05/2012: Army of Darkness #4 - 5,972 (-6.4%)
06-08:2012: -
09/2012: Army of Darkness #5 - 5,463 (-8.5%)
10/2012: -
11/2012: Army of Darkness #6 - ???? (???)
12/2012: Army of Darkness #7 - 4,963 (???)
01/2013: Army of Darkness #8 - 4,498 (-9.4%)
01/2013: Army of Darkness #9 - 4,361 (-3.0%)

Finally a drop of less than 5 per cent, but this is also ending, with issue thirteen.

291. Hellraiser Road Below (Boom!)

11/2012: Hellraiser Road Below #1 - 5,647
11/2012: Hellraiser Road Below #2 - 4,896 (-13.3%)
12/2012: Hellraiser Road Below #3 - 4,921 (+0.5%)
01/2013: Hellraiser Road Below #4 - 4,521 (-8.1%)

Not a great finish, and not a very good omen for the new series starting next month.

292. Caligula (Avatar)

01/2012: Caligula #6 - 5,212

====

02-11/2012: -
12/2012: Caligula Heart of Rome #1 - 5,055 (-3.0%)
01/2013: Caligula Heart of Rome #2 - 4,529 (-10.4%)

Not too bad a drop, if it stays at this level Avatar will probably be relatively happy.

289. The Answer (Dark Horse)

01/2013: The Answer #1 - 4,572

Written by Dennis Hopeless, writer of Avengers Arena, arguably this may have done better if it had come out in 6 months time, when he’s better known as a writer. It’s a bit of an odd book.

288. Jennifer Blood First Blood (Dynamite)

09/2012: Jennifer Blood First Blood #1 - 6,372
10/2012: -
11/2012: Jennifer Blood First Blood #2 - 5,150 (-19.2%)
01/2013: Jennifer Blood First Blood #3 - 4,583 (-11.0%)

Never likely to be huge, and there are still three issues to come.

287. Change (Image)

12/2012: Change #1 - 6,439
01/2013: Change #2 - 4,604 (-28.5%)
I still have no idea what this comic is actually about.
285. Flash Gordon Zeitgeist (Dynamite)

01/2012: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #2 - 8,611

====

02/2012: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #3 - 7,203 (-16.4%)
03/2012: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #4 - 6,934 (-3.7%)
04/2012: -
05/2012: -
06/2012: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #5 - 6,545 (-5.6%)
07/2012:
08/2012: -
09/2012: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #6 - 6,500 (-0.7%)
10/2012: -
11/2012: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #7 - 6,142 (-5.5%)
12/2012: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #8 - 5,182 (-15.6%)
01/2013: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #9 - 4,695 (-9.4%)

Only one more issue to go as this limps to a close, some six months late.

283. Green Hornet (Dynamite)

01/2012: Green Hornet #21 - 8,043

====

02/2012: Green Hornet #22 - 7,789 (-3.2%)
03/2012: Green Hornet #23 - 7,087 (-9.0%)
04/2012: Green Hornet #24 - 6,751 (-4.7%)
05/2012: Green Hornet #25 - 6,641 (-1.6%)
06/2012: -
07/2012: Green Hornet #26 - 6,413 (-3.4%)
08/2012: Green Hornet #27 - 6,071 (-5.3%)
09/2012: Green Hornet #28 - 5,939 (-2.2%)
10/2012: Green Hornet #29 - 5,812 (-2.1%)
10/2012: Green Hornet #30 - 5,669 (-2.5%)
11/2012: Green Hornet #31 - 5,458 (-3.7%)
12/2012: Green Hornet #32 - 5,217 (-4.4%)
01/2013: Green Hornet #33 - 4,755 (-8.9%)

Not cancelled, as I wrongly stated last month, but changing name to Green Hornet Legacy when the new series launches. Not sure how much longer it will last, even so.

282. Mind MGMT (Dark Horse)

05/2012: Mind MGMT #1 - 7,537
06/2012: Mind MGMT #2 - 5,566 (-26.2%)
08/2012: Mind MGMT #3 - 5,579 (+0.2%)
08/2012: Mind MGMT #4 - ???? (???%)
09/2012: Mind MGMT #5 - 5,017 (???%)
10/2012: -
11/2012: Mind MGMT #0 - 5,526 (+10.1%)
12/2012: Mind MGMT #6 - ???? (???)
01/2013: Mind MGMT #7 - 4,766 (???)

Optioned for a film, which may see sales improve.

281. Ferals (Avatar)

01/2012: Ferals #1 - 7,802

====

02/2012: Ferals #2 - 6,008 (-23.0%)
02/2012: Ferals #3 - 6,159 (+2.5%)
03/2012: -
04/2012: Ferals #4 - 6,043 (-1.9%)
05/2012: Ferals #5 - 5,624 (-6.9%)
06/2012: -
07/2012: Ferals #6 - 5,883 (+4.6%)
08/2012: Ferals #7 - 5,690 (-3.3%)
08/2012: Ferals #8 - 5,525 (-2.9%)
09/2012: -
10/2012: Ferals #9 - 5,406 (-2.2%)
11/2012: Ferals #10 - ???? (???)
12/2012: Ferals #11 - 5,045 (???)
01/2013: Ferals #12 - 4,775 (-5.4%)

This wasn’t in the new Previews, so there may only be two more issues to go.

279. Darkness (Image)

01/2012: Darkness #98 - 5,316

====

02/2012: Darkness #99 - 5,893 (+10.9%)
02/2012: Darkness #100 - 11,363 (+92.8%)

05/2012: Darkness #103 - 6,140 (+3.0%)
06/2012: Darkness #104 - 5,823 (-5.2%)
07/2012: Darkness #105 - 5,515 (-5.3%)
08/2012: -
09/2012: Darkness #106 - 5,113 (-7.3%)
10/2012: Darkness #107 - 5,296 (+3.6%)
11/2012: Darkness #108 - 5,176 (-2.3%)
12/2012: Darkness #109 - 4,961 (-4.2%)
01/2013: Darkness #110 - 4,869 (-1.9%)

Still slowly drifting down.

278. Popeye (IDW)

04/2012: Popeye #1 - 12,250
05/2012: -
06/2012: Popeye #2 - 9,983 (-18.5%)
07/2012: Popeye #3 - 8,849 (-11.4%)

11/2012: Popeye #7 - 5,417 (-19.1%)
12/2012: Popeye #8 - 4,866 (-10.2%)
01/2013: Popeye #9 - 4,875 (+0.2%)

Penultimate issue, as it finally stabilizes.

277. Dark Horse Presents (Dark Horse)

01/2012: -

====

02/2012: Dark Horse Presents #8 - 7,936 (+1.1%)
02/2012: Dark Horse Presents #9 - 7,751 (-2.3%)
03/2012: Dark Horse Presents #10 - 6,881 (-11.2%)
04/2012: Dark Horse Presents #11 - 7,118 (+3.4%)
05/2012: Dark Horse Presents #12 - 7,281 (+2.3%)
06/2012: Dark Horse Presents #13 - 7,132 (-2.0%)
07/2012: Dark Horse Presents #14 - 6,448 (-9.6%)
08/2012: Dark Horse Presents #15 - 6,154 (-4.6%)
09/2012: Dark Horse Presents #16 - 5,765 (-6.3%)
10/2012: Dark Horse Presents #17 - 5,546 (-3.8%)
11/2012: Dark Horse Presents #18 - 5,400 (-2.6%)
12/2012: Dark Horse Presents #19 - 5,123 (-5.1%)
01/2013: Dark Horse Presents #20 - 4,949 (-3.4%)

Maybe dropping a little faster than it should be at this stage.

274. Hollows (IDW)

12/2012: The Hollows #1 - 9,303
01/2013: The Hollows #2 - 4,988 (-46.4%)

A huge drop, probably good that this is only a four issue miniseries.

272. The Lone Ranger (Dynamite)

01/2012: The Lone Ranger #1 - 9,635

====

02/2012: The Lone Ranger #2 - 7,151 (-25.8%)
03/2012: The Lone Ranger #3 - 6,476 (-9.4%)
04/2012: The Lone Ranger #4 - 6,071 (-6.3%)
05/2012: The Lone Ranger #5 - 6,044 (-0.4%)
06/2012: The Lone Ranger #6 - 5,830 (-3.5%)

01/2013: The Lone Ranger #12 - 5,059 (-3.0%)
265, 273. Lord of the Jungle (Dynamite)

01/2012: Lord of the Jungle #1 - 25,212

=====

02/2012: Lord of the Jungle #2 - 10,525 (-58.3%)
03/2012: Lord of the Jungle #3 - 9,311 (-11.5%)
04/2012: -

11/2012: Lord of the Jungle #9 - 6,576 (-7.3%)
12/2012: Lord of the Jungle #10 - 6,259 (-4.8%)
01/2013: Lord of the Jungle #11 - 5,141 (-17.9%)
01/2013: Lord of the Jungle #12 - 5,016 (-2.4%)
263. The Spider (Dynamite)

05/2012: The Spider #1 - 12,547
06/2012: The Spider #2 - 8,680 (-30.8%)
07/2012: The Spider #3 - 8,907 (+2.6%)
08/2012: The Spider #4 - 7,956 (-10.7%)
09/2012: The Spider #5 - 6,985 (-12.2%)
10/2012: -
11/2012: The Spider #6 - 6,283 (-10.0%)
12/2012: The Spider #7 - 5,571 (-11.3%)
01/2013: The Spider #8 - 5,170 (-7.2%)

Three Dynamite series that are just skirting cancellation, judging by the books selling not much less. Lone Ranger will likely be kept around until the movie has been and gone, but it isn’t looking good for the other two.

262. GFT Sleepy Hollow (Zenescope)

10/2012: GFT Sleepy Hollow #1 - 6,725
11/2012: GFT Sleepy Hollow #2 - 6,216 (-7.6%)
12/2012: GFT Sleepy Hollow #3 - 5,393 (-13.2%)
01/2013: GFT Sleepy Hollow #4 - 5,188 (-3.8%)

Maybe starting to level out.

260. Damsels (Dynamite)

09/2012: Damsels #1 - 13,201
10/2012: Damsels #2 - 9,029 (-31.6%)
11/2012: Damsels #3 - 7,388 (-18.2%)
12/2012: Damsels #4 - 5,851 (-20.8%)
01/2012: Damsels #5 - 5,221 (-10.8%)

Less of a drop, but that still isn’t a good thing.

259. Guarding The Globe (Image)

09/2012: Guarding The Globe #1 - 10,183
10/2012: Guarding The Globe #2 - 7,104 (-30.2%)
11/2012: Guarding The Globe #3 - 5,871 (-17.4%)
12/2012: Guarding The Globe #4 - 5,302 (-9.7%)
01/2013: Guarding The Globe #5 - 5,225 (-1.5%)

Last issue, to be retooled as Invincible Universe.

258. Prophecy (Dynamite)

05/2012: Prophecy #1 - 11,124
07/2012: Prophecy #2 - 8,844 (-20.5%)

09/2012: -
10/2012: Prophecy #4 - 6,268 (-9.8%)
11/2012: Prophecy #5 - 5,733 (-8.5%)
12/2012: -
01/2013: Prophecy #6 - 5,237 (-8.7%)

Penultimate issue, probably a good thing. At this rate the last issue may not even chart.

256. Emily & The Strangers (Dark Horse)

01/2013: Emily & The Strangers #1 - 5,409

With the success of many all-ages books currently, I wonder if this might not have been a little under-ordered.

255. Jennifer Blood (Dynamite)

01/2012: Jennifer Blood #8 - 10,767

====

02/2012: Jennifer Blood #9 - 9,906 (-8.0%)

04/2012: Jennifer Blood #12 - 8,350 (-7.0%)
05/2012: Jennifer Blood #13 - 7,997 (-4.2%)
06/2012: -
07/2012: Jennifer Blood #14 - 7,889 (-1.4%)

12/2012: Artifacts #23 - 5,708 (-1.5%)
01/2013: Artifacts #24 - 5,478 (-4.0%)

Drifting down into its third year, I can’t see it having a fourth, although it is going into a crossover with Darkness & Witchblade. Neither of those sell much more than this currently.

12/2012: Borderlands Origins #2 - 5,040 (-21.4%)

Ending with issue twenty five, after nine years, seventy eight issues and two publishers. With his success on Revival, Tim Seeley will still be pretty busy.

01/2013: Repossessed #1 - 5,952
242. End Times Of Bram & Ben (Image)

01/2013: End Times Of Bram & Ben #1 - 6,009

Two new Image books, on the lower end of the sales spectrum, but Bram & Ben particularly has had good word of mouth, and is probably the better of the two books.

A biggish drop, but still well in the traditional sales range of this comic. Nothing to worry about, sales will probably increase again next month.

01/2013: Dejah Thoris #21 - 6,998 (-7.4%)

Still falling pretty fast. The main book is still being published, but obviously Dynamite have their attention focused in more profitable areas, as it’s been a few months since the last issue.

Seems to be in decline at the moment, but all-ages books can be unpredictable.

209. Nowhere Men (Image)

11/2012: Nowhere Men #1 - 11,815
12/2012: Nowhere Men #2 - 7,368 (-37.6%)
01/2012: Nowhere Men #3 - 7,421 (+0.7%)

Rock solid, with multiple printings of the first two issues. It’s a really interesting book, but like Jon Hickman’s books, it’s quite dense, and I suspect will be better read as a whole.

208. GI Joe (IDW)

11-12/2012: -
01/2012: Non Humans #2 - 7,489 (-33.3%)

A pretty bad drop, surprisingly so considering that the first issue sold out.

206. Pathfinder (Dynamite)

09/2012: -
10/2012: Pathfinder #2 - 9,362 (-34.4%)

Drops speeding up again.

11/2012: Kiss #6 - 7,866 (-17.1%)
12/2012: -
01/2012: Kiss #7 - 7,539 (-4.2%)

The smallest drop yet, maybe a positive sign.

204. GI Joe Real American Hero (IDW)

01/2012: Real American Hero #186 - 7,544 (-3.0%)

In a gentle drifting decline. Plenty of leeway for a book like this though.

A slight lull, and then the drops recommence as the book double ships this month.

201. Adventure Time Fiona & Cake (Boom!)

Lost almost a thousand readers this month, but about to get a Garth Ennis injection. That sounds vaguely dirty, which is probably quite appropriate.

197. Todd The Ugliest Kid On Earth (Image)

01/2013: Todd The Ugliest Kid On Earth #1 - 7,879

Another new Image book, and another sell-out and second print.

12/2012: -
01/2013: Ghost #3 - 7,981 (-11.6%)

You would think that getting the recent X-Force artist Phil Noto onboard would sell more books.

192. Transformers Spotlight (IDW)

12/2012: Spotlight Orion Pax - 9,109
01/2013: Spotlight Thundercracker - 8,327 (-8.6%)

A couple of thousand copies behind the main book, fairly good I guess.

12/2012: -
01/2013: Mind The Gap #7 - 8,784 (-7.4%)

Still not found its level, but still a great book. I hope trade sales are enough to keep it going.

184, 280. Deathmatch (Boom!)

12/2012: Deathmatch #1 - 30,946 (35,760)
01/2013: Deathmatch #2 - 9,315 (-70.0%)

Very predictable, given that the first issue was a dollar book, and the main series is almost 4 bucks. That does mean this issue made more money than the first has so far. The first issue charts again with another 4,814 copies sold.

183. Image Firsts (Image)

12/2012: Image Firsts Walking Dead #1 - 16,253 (25,580)
12/2012: Image Firsts Saga #1 - 10,536

12/2012: Image Firsts Fatale #1 - 5,330
12/2012: Image Firsts Revival #1 - 5,012

The Walking Dead issue charts again, selling an excellent 9,327 more copies. I would guess across all of the various editions there are probably almost a hundred thousand issue ones out there.

181. Game of Thrones (Dynamite)

12/2012: -
01/2013: Game of Thrones #12 - 9,359 (-9.0%)

The TV show is about to return, whether that can help arrest the drops is another matter.

180. Bravest Warriors (Boom!)

10/2012: Bravest Warriors #1 - 14,866
11/2012: Bravest Warriors #2 - 12,900 (-13.2%)
12/2012: Bravest Warriors #3 - 10,229 (-20.7%)
01/2013: Bravest Warriors #4 - 9,451 (-7.6%)

The drops are shrinking, this is clearly no Adventure Time, but it’s still doing well for a comedy book.

179, 185, 188, 215. Mars Attacks (IDW)

06/2012: Mars Attacks #1 - 43,514

12/2012: Transformers Robots In Disguise #12 - 10,161 (-1.2%)
01/2013: Transformers Robots In Disguise #13 - 9,935 (-2.2%)

No More Than Meets The Eye this month, the other two on-goings are fairly solid.

01/2013: The Legend of Luther Strode #2 - 10,128 (-18.5%)

Not too bad a drop, and still well above the last series.

174. The Massive (Dark Horse)

06/2012: Massive #1 - 22,173
07/2012: Massive #2 - 16,600 (-25.1%)

12/2012: Massive #7 - 10,854 (-5.2%)
01/2013: Massive #8 - 10,206 (-6.0%)

This still shows no sign of settling down, sales-wise. I still really like this book, it’s probably my favorite of the titles he’s writing at the moment, so I hope it does stabilize soon.

A little rise for the main book, and a little drop for 1946. It looks like they’ll be continuing with a single main book, and a miniseries alongside, covering different timelines. Vampire is coming in April following directly on from 1946.

170. Clone (Image)

11/2012: Clone #1 - 23,292
12/2012: Clone #2 - 11,144 (-52.2%)
01/2012: Clone #3 - 10,525 (-5.5%)

Flattening out, that’s a good drop after last month.

168. Doctor Who Ongoing (IDW)

01/2010: Doctor Who #7 - 7,239 (-2.8%)
01/2011: Doctor Who Vol. 2 #1 - 8,843 (+42.7%)
01/2012: Doctor Who Vol. 2 #13 - 7,156 (-0.6%)

02/2012: Doctor Who Vol. 2 #14 - 7,175 (+0.3%)
03/2012: Doctor Who Vol. 2 #15 - 6,975 (-2.8%)
04/2012: Doctor Who Vol. 2 #16 - 6,973 (0%)
05-08/2012: -
09/2012: Doctor Who Annual 2012 - 6,722 (-3.6%)
10/2012: Doctor Who Vol. 3 #1 - 18,083 (+169.0%)
10/2012: Doctor Who Vol. 3 #2 - 10,824 (-40.1%)
11/2012: -
12/2012: Doctor Who Vol. 3 #3 - 11,144 (+3.0%)
01/2013: Doctor Who Vol. 3 #4 - 10,865 (-2.5%)

If this is the level it’s settling into, it’s a good couple of thousand higher than the last series. An A-list creative team is probably helping a lot.

166. Magic The Gathering (IDW)

02/2012: Magic The Gathering #1 - 28,858
02/2012: Magic The Gathering #2 - 23,849 (-17.4%)
03/2012: Magic The Gathering #3 - 20,078 (-15.8%)

10/2012: -
11/2012: MTG The Spell Thief #4 - 12,329 (-3.1%)
12/2012: MTG Path of Vengeance #1 - 11,412 (-7.4%)
01/2012: MTG Path of Vengeance #2 - 11,002 (-3.6%)

An excellent drop, making up for a little for the non-increase of last month’s first issue.

165. Star Wars Agent O/T Empire (Dark Horse)

01/2012: Agent O/T Empire Iron Eclipse #2 - 12,675

====

02/2012: Agent O/T Empire Iron Eclipse #3 - 12,442 (-1.8%)

12/2012: Agent O/T Empire Hard Targets #3 - 11,391 (-9.3%)
01/2013: Agent O/T Empire Hard Targets #4 - 11,222 (-1.5%)

Only two Star Wars books this month, this one a bit in the shadow of the new series, which is a bit higher in the chart!

163. Mara (Image)

12/2012: Mara #1 - 18,164
01/2013: Mara #2 - 11,397 (-37.3%)

A rather bad drop, but an okay level for a sports sci-fi book, I guess?

161. Bloodshot (Valiant)

07/2012: Bloodshot #1 - 29,224
08/2012: Bloodshot #2 - 16,024 (-45.2%)
09/2012: Bloodshot #3 - 14,517 (-9.4%)
10/2012: Bloodshot #4 - 14,382 (-0.9%)
11/2012: Bloodshot #5 - 13,156 (-8.5%)
12/2012: Bloodshot #6 - 12,508 (-8.5%)
01/2013: Bloodshot #7 - 11,918 (-4.7%)

The lowest selling of the new Valiant books, but about to cross over with Harbinger to pump things up a bit.

159. The Shadow (Dynamite)

04/2012: The Shadow #1 - 45,548
05/2012: The Shadow #2 - 21,982 (-51.7%)
06/2012: The Shadow #3 - 19,554 (-11.0%)
07/2012: -
08/2012: The Shadow #4 - 19,063 (-2.5%)
09/2012: The Shadow #5 - 17,284 (-9.3%)
09/2012: The Shadow Annual #1 - 11,437
10/2012: The Shadow #6 - 16,362 (-5.3%)
11/2012: The Shadow #7 - 14,884 (-9.0%)
11/2012: The Shadow #8 - 13,778 (-7.4%)
12/2012: The Shadow Special #1 - 9,536
01/2013: The Shadow #9 - 12,010 (-12.8%)

That’s the second biggest drop the book’s had, which isn’t a promising sign. Still, not bad sales at the moment.

158. Judge Dredd (IDW)

11/2012: Judge Dredd #1 - 32,266
12/2012: Judge Dredd #2 - 13,995 (-56.6%)
01/2013: Judge Dredd #3 - 12,151 (-13.2%)

Starting to flatten out, but a little way to go yet.

155. Archer & Armstrong (Valiant)

08/2012: Archer & Armstrong #1 - 23,464
09/2012: Archer & Armstrong #2 - 14,539 (-38.0%)
10/2012: Archer & Armstrong #3 - 14,715 (+1.2%)
11/2012: Archer & Armstrong #4 - 13,478 (-8.4%)
12/2012: Archer & Armstrong #5 - 14,544 (+7.9%)
01/2013: Archer & Armstrong #6 - 12,642 (-13.1%)

Obviously the first appearance of the Eternal Warrior last month did inflate sales, as it drops back down again.

154. Chew (Image)

01/2010: Chew #8 - 12,727

08/2012: -
09/2012: Chew #28 - 12,531 (+2.8%)
10/2012: Chew #29 - 12,877 (+2.8%)
11/2012: Chew #30 - 12,756 (-0.9%)
01/2013: Chew #31 - 12,687 (-0.5%)

Amazingly stable. The people who love this book, really love this book.

153. Doctor Who Prisoners of Time (IDW)

01/2013: Doctor Who Prisoners Of Time #1 - 12,752

A very good number, above the ongoing series.

151. Harbinger (Valiant)

06/2012: Harbinger #1 - 32,111
07/2012: Harbinger #2 - 17,239 (-46.3%)
08/2012: Harbinger #3 - 15,482 (-10.2%)
09/2012: Harbinger #4 - 15,298 (-1.2%)
10/2012: Harbinger #5 - 14,603 (-4.5%)
11/2012: Harbinger #6 - 13,617 (-6.7%)
12/2012: Harbinger #7 - 12,783 (-6.1%)
01/2013: Harbinger #8 - 12,824 (+0.3%)

If this is the level it’s going to stick at, I would imagine Valiant will be quite happy.

146. Conan (Dark Horse)

01/2008: Conan #48 - 21,850
01/2009: The Cimmerian #7 - 21,782
01/2010: The Cimmerian #17 - 17,356
01/2011: The Road of Kings #2 - 13,385 (-16.9%)

07/2012: Conan the Barbarian #6 - 15,078 (-2.0%)
08/2012: Conan the Barbarian #7 - 14,908 (-1.1%)
09/2012: Conan the Barbarian #8 - 14,443 (-3.1%)
10/2012: Conan the Barbarian #9 - 14,314 (-0.9%)
10/2012: Conan the Barbarian #9 - 14,314 (-0.9%)
11/2012: Conan the Barbarian #10 - 13,822 (-3.4%)
12/2012: Conan the Barbarian #11 - 13,436 (-2.8%)
01/2012: Conan the Barbarian #12 - 13,254 (-1.4%)

Pretty settles sales pattern on this book now, despite the rotating artists. Possibly because of the rotating artists.

145. Shadowman (Valiant)

11/2012: Shadowman #1 - 25,048
12/2012: Shadowman #2 - 16,917 (-32.5%)
01/2013: Shadowman #3 - 13,327 (-21.2%)

Rather a high third issue drop, but it’s still at a decent level.

144. Buffy The Vampire Slayer Spike (Dark Horse)

08/2012: BTVS Spike #1 - 19,372
09/2012: BTVS Spike #2 - 16,589 (-14.4%)
10/2012: BTVS Spike #3 - 14,996 (-9.6%)
11/2012: BTVS Spike #4 - 14,422 (-3.8%)
01/2012: BTVS Spike #5 - 13,385 (-7.2%)

Last issue, and rather a silly book, unfortunately. I say that as a Buffy fan.

137. Bedlam (Image)

10/2012: Bedlam #1 - 22,736 (27,303)
11/2012: Bedlam #2 - 18,583 (-18.3%)
12/2012: -
01/2013: Bedlam #3 - 14,251 (-23.3%)

A very steep drop, the shine seems to have come off this title rather abruptly. No idea why, it’s actually getting better and better. Sadly the creative team have fallen out, and a new artist will be joining Nick Spencer.

135. Angel & Faith (Dark Horse)

01/2008: After the Fall #3 - 46,013
01/2009: After the Fall #16 - 34,801

12/2012: Angel & Faith #17 - 15,026 (-2.7%)
01/2013: Angel & Faith #18 - 14,609 (-2.8%)

Classic standard attrition.

130. Masks (Dynamite)

11/2012: Masks #1 - 63,932 (75,492)
12/2012: Masks #2 - 16,923 (-73.6%)
01/2013: Masks #3 - 15,396 (-9.0%)

Starting to level out, at a pretty decent level. Dynamite’s best selling book.

128. Star Trek Countdown to Darkness (IDW)

01/2013: Star Trek Countdown To Darkness #1 - 15,753

The prequel to the second film does okay numbers, and has gone to second print.

119. X-O Manowar (Valiant)

05/2012: X-O Manowar #1 - 42,708
06/2012: X-O Manowar #2 - 21,261 (-50.2%)

12/2012: X-O Manowar #8 - 14,462 (-0.4%)
01/2012: X-O Manowar #9 - 16,599 (+14.8%)

XO gets another increase, as it heads into the Planet Death storyline.

01/2013: Spawn #226 - 16,814 (-37.4%)
01/2013: Spawn #227 - 17,172 (+2.1%)

Two issues this month, as it drops back down from last month’s high, and then increases again. This anniversary run is definitely a massive improvement in sales for McFarlane.

114. Revival (Image)

07/2012: Revival #1 - 18,039
08/2012: Revival #2 - 10,486 (-41.9%)
09/2012: Revival #3 - 13,943 (+33.0%)

11/2012: Revival #5 - 14,098 (-7.6%)
01/2013: Revival #6 - 17,396 (+23.4%)

A massive increase, as the second story arc begins.

97, 167. Adventure Time (Boom!)

02/2012: Adventure Time #1 - 12,392 (20,915)
03/2012: Adventure Time #2 - 11,329 (20,193) (-8.6%)

11/2012: Adventure Time #10 - 23,656 (+14.6%)
12/2012: Adventure Time Cover Showcase - 7,478
01/2013: Adventure Time #11 - 10,980
01/2013: Adventure Time #12 - 20,407

Those numbers for Adventure Time #11 are obviously wrong, a result of the late shipping of that book. I would imagine the rest of the numbers will show up next month, so I’ll do the percentage changes when it’s right.

88. Buffy TVS (Dark Horse)

01/2008: Buffy TVS #10 - 88,474

01/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #17 - 23,219 (-2.8%)

The slow drift downwards continues, but it’s still the second best-selling licensed book on the market.

53. Star Wars (Dark Horse)

01/2013: Star Wars #1 - 39,663

A fantastic debut for this Brian Wood-penned series, set in the same timeline as the original trilogy. Star Wars hasn’t seen sales figures like this in years. It’s gone through 4 printings before the third issue has even been released, so these sales may yet go up.

12/2012: Invincible #99 - 15,566 (-3.6%)
01/2013: Invincible #100 - 44,985 (+189.0%)

While maybe not in the same league as Walking Dead’s hundredth issue, Kirkman’s other long-running book posts an excellent increase for this cataclysmic anniversary issue. The Chromium cover sells 5,122 copies, which I’ve added to the figure above.

38, 230. Saga (Image)

03/2012: Saga #1 - 37,641 (51,766)
04/2012: Saga #2 - 36,885 (43,137)(-2.0%)

12/2012: Saga #8 - 42,324 (-9.9%)
01/2013: Saga #9 - 45,629 (+7.8%)

Every new issue is still being reprinted as sales increase again, with issue seven’s second print re-charting with 6,296 copies sold. This still has some upwards movement to make, I think, as new readers are finding the book every month.

The third best-selling issue so far, as Charlie Adlard celebrates 100 issues, and an extra cover provides a boost. It’s not the start of a new arc, so it doesn’t quite hit the same heights of issue #103, the last issue that had a variant. If I were Kirkman, I’d be thinking very carefully about more regular variants, possibly for the beginning of each new arc, twice a year.

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. The formatting is killing me. Way too much text is getting lopped off at the right hand edge. I feel like a broken record, but there’s gotta be a way to fix this.

No DC column, yet. Will it be back, this month?

  2. A note- your lovable 3 column layout is eating up the sales figures again,( hit the spacebar after the image, on 300, Battlefields & 299. hell yeah)

And Hell Yeah to Image @ #299-thats what the public wants to see…another swearing, disgruntled, cheap superhero type. Say are there any Image founders on top 300? … (besides the Savage Dragon dude, amazing he hangs in there). . Wonder if they quit comics? Does McFarlane still do Spawn… Maybe they don’t gel with the Epic Comics style rebranding of their output…

  3. What’s the point of going to the trouble of putting all this together if half the information can’t be read?

  4. I have no idea what’s happened this month, it’s much worse than usual. I’ve mailed Heidi, hopefully it’ll be fixed soon. Sorry all!

  5. Right, seems to be sorted now (almost), me and Heidi will put our heads together and try to make sure this doesn’t happen again! Thank you for your patience! :)

  6. Comback is a really great comic. Anyone who saw and enjoyed Looper last year should be picking it up. Lovely artwork too, it’s got a nice Michael Lark/Sean Phillips vibe to it.

Revival seems to be doing extremely well. Guess I’d better pick up the first trade and see what I’ve been missing.

And sorry to have to finish on a negative not but have to agree with the others: there must be a way to fix the formatting here. And where’s the DC sales figures or do we have to translate from German again this month?

  7. Todd the Ugliest Kid in the World and Nowhere Men are two great Image books I’m enjoying. Glad to see they are selling decently.

McFarlane is writing Spawn, and has been since #185. Silvestri is writing Cyberforce, but that doesn’t show up on the Diamond charts because the first 5 issues are free. And I believe Non Humans (#207) is drawn by Whilce Portacio.

  9. I’ve heard that the first issue of Doctor Who: Prisoners of Time has went back for a second printing. I’m glad to hear this, as I’ve really enjoyed both of the first two issues.

  10. @ jason
    Thanks, was wondering about that….

A few random impressions, regarding books at image, I suppose certain books will never go away since founders or the big Zombie sugar daddy they rally around now are involved, But maybe they should, Hate to say it, I’m kind of losing interest in Saga, art is cool but the the family, true love thing – man, that is getting corny. I’m happy when the hitmen show up now. Then it snaps back into something interesting. Maybe this is the kind of storyline that happens when hipsters have kids. Mara-the columnist was just too kind but sci fi sports is right. Fish pie anybody?

To me , something about Invincible looks like Hanna Barbera cartoon with swears. But at least its kind of original, if the world looked like Space Ghost. Would nice to have a better superhero entry in there thats not a remake, cheap type one (or have “blood” in the title) Maybe since that dude is the Golden Goose so he gets his superhero fix but time for that title should go the route of 70% of the DC books into retirement or trade world. …the Byrne book, HighWays. Logan’s Run looks modern in comparision, or something like it with weird Byrne types inside, including the famous red haired ,extra long beard Byrne dude that probably on every neighborhood watch list. Seeing the way Byrne draws people in his stock style is so disorienting that its hard to get into a story of his. Frank Miller, sadly, is kind of the same now if he’s still doing books. What happened to those guys…. but the NJByrne blog of his art is cool. Weird how that works…

  11. I think the drop in Bedlam sales has to do with the ultra violent first issue coming out just before Newtown. The continuing theme of ultra violent horror is a niche market as it is and maybe reaching it’s drop off point altogether. Bloodshot and Harbingers drop off has to do with the price (3.99) which is is too much but also that Valiant had to drag the readership through a crossover event(Harbinger Wars) that nobody but Valiant wanted. Archer and Armstrong is a great book and hopefully will survive the overall market slump. Revival and Massive and Panzerfaust all deserve better sales but with Image I am increasingly trade waiting because of budget considerations and that I prefer the format.
