walking dead 93

Walking Dead and Buffy top the chart again, but the debuts of Lord of the Jungle, Fatale and Danger Girl: Revolver push the Turtles down to sixth. Elsewhere there are two new Transformers ongoings, a few more new Image books, and the end of several titles.

136 indie books charted this month, 10 up on last month and again less Marvel or DC books charting this month. The bottom book sold 2,606, half of what it was 2 months ago. In total those books sold approximately 1,052,459 down from last month’s 1,067,927 with more titles. That’s the second month in a row that’. Average sales are 7,739 per book, well down from last month’s 8,475. As usual, UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

This month Image were again the number three publisher, with 5.48% dollar share and a 4.83 market share, followed by Dark Horse with 4.89% dollar share and 3.55% market share, IDW with a 4.35% dollar share and a 3.78% market share, Dynamite with a 3.46% dollar share and a 3.66% market share, Boom with 1.66% dollar share and 1.35% market share and Eaglemoss with 1.47% dollar and 0.30% market share. IDW, Dynamite & Boom are up for the month, everyone else is down.

The juggernaut rolls on, super-stable, with the TV show restarting this month. As per usual every paperback collection charts in the GN chart, with book one selling 4,470 copies at number 3, and book 15 just behind at number 7 with sales of 3,262.

63. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Dark Horse)
01/2008: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #10 - 88,474
01/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #21 - 69,980

01/2012: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #5 - 30,146 (-3.2%)

Hopefully starting to level out. I’ve been hearing a few complaints that it isn’t very Buffy-ish at the moment, with the supporting cast not appearing too much.

72. Lord of the Jungle (Dynamite)
01/2012: Lord of the Jungle #1 - 25,212

Dynamite’s Tarzan book is based on the early, now public domain, novels, but can’t use the Tarzan name as it’s trademarked. They’re now being sued by ERB Inc, over this and their Warlord of Mars books. Good starting sales anyway, although I’d bet we’ll see a sharp drop next month.

90. Fatale (Image)
01/2012: Fatale #1 - 20,515

That’s a great first issue figure, well above what Criminal was getting (in fact, their best sales together since Criminal #2 I think). It seems to have been a solid hit too, selling out and getting second and third prints.

97. Danger Girl (IDW)
01/2012: Danger Girl Revolver #1 - 19,169

A very healthy start, with a very J. Scott Campbell-looking artist in Chris Madden.

100. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing (IDW)
08/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #1 - 34,803 (39,180)

12/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro Series #2 Michelangelo - 15,930
01/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #6 - 18,773 (-4.7%)

Possibly approaching stability, at a very good level.

106. Angel & Faith (Dark Horse)
01/2007: Auld Lang Syne #3 (IDW) - 6,699
01/2008: After the Fall #2 (IDW) - 46,013

12/2011: Angel & Faith #5 - 18,356 (-2.6%)
01/2012: Angel & Faith #6 - 17,800 (-3.0%)

Not quite stable yet, but more so than Buffy.

114. The Boys (Dynamite)
01/2009: The Boys #26 - 26,802

12/2011: The Boys #61 - 17,024 (-1.7%)
01/2012: The Boys #62 - 16,700 (-1.9%)

A slightly larger drop than usual, but nothing to worry about.

116. Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic (Dark Horse)
01/2012: Knights of The Old Republic War #1 - 16,179

One of the more popular Star Wars books relaunches in a new miniseries. Maybe slightly underwhelming sales, but this series has a strong trade following I’m told

Archie (Archie)
01/2007: Archie #572 - 2,501
01/2008: -

12/2011: Archie #628 - 17,286 (-0.6%)
01/2012: Archie #629 - 15,906 (-8.0%)

A bit of a drop off, but still very much punching above it’s weight for the third part of the Kiss crossover.

121. Transformers More Than Meets The Eye (IDW)
01/2010: Transformers Ongoing #3 - 12,609 (+0.7%)
01/2011: Transformers Ongoing #15 - 10,159 (-3.9%)

12/2011: Transformers Death Of Optimus Prime (One Shot) - 12,961
12/2011: Transformers Ongoing #31 - 10,348 (-1.0%)
01/2012: Transformers More Than Meets Eye Ongoing #1 - 15,340

144. Transformers Robots In Disguise (IDW)
01/2012: Transformers Robots In Disguise Ongoing #1 - 12,234

The main ongoing Transformers title splits into two, with More Than Meets The Eye coming in comfortably above Robots in Disguise. The former is written by James Roberts, who appears to be becoming a bit of a fan-favourite. I would have expected these two books to launch a little higher to be honest, but I doubt they’ll see big second issue drops.

122. Star Trek Legion of Superheroes (IDW)
10/2011: Star Trek Legion of Superheroes #1 - 20,950
11/2011: Star Trek Legion of Superheroes #2 - 17,782 (-15.1%)
12/2011: Star Trek Legion of Superheroes #3 - 15,952 (-10.3%)
01/2012: Star Trek Legion of Superheroes #4 - 15,004 (-5.9%)

Smoothing out as it heads to the end, still well above the main Star Trek book.

12/2011: Invincible #86 - 14,457 (-1.5%)
01/2012: Invincible #87 - 14,299 (-1.1%)

Very slowly dropping, but not very fast. Kirkman has 3 top ten trades this month, with the newest Invincible collection taking the number 2 spot with 4,993 copies sold.

133. Game of Thrones (Dynamite)
09/2011: Game of Thrones #1 - 20,888
10/2011: Game of Thrones #2 - 16,094 (-22.9%)
11/2011: Game of Thrones #3 - 15,983 (-0.7%)
12/2011: Game of Thrones #4 - 14,514 (-9.2%)
01/2012: Game of Thrones #5 - 13,096 (-9.8%)

Quite sharp drops for the last couple of issues, but that may slow as the new series starts on TV.

136. Spawn (Image)
01/2007: Spawn #164 - 24,534

10/2011: Spawn #212 - 13,483 (-0.3%)
11/2011: Spawn #213 - 13,369 (-0.8%)
12/2011: Spawn #214 - 13,017 (-2.6%)
01/2012: Spawn #215 - 12,794 (-1.7%)

This has lost a third of its readership in the last year, which is a little worrying.

138. Star Wars Agent O/T Empire Iron Eclipse (Dark Horse)
12/2011: Agent O/T Empire Iron Eclipse #1 - 15,700
01/2012: Agent O/T Empire Iron Eclipse #2 - 12,675 (-19.3%)

A fairly standard second issue drop, for a pretty fun Star Wars book.

145. Star Trek Ongoing (IDW)

09/2011: Star Trek Ongoing #1 - 15,943
10/2011: Star Trek Ongoing #2 - 13,198 (-17.2%)
11/2011: Star Trek Ongoing #3 - 13,296 (+0.7%)
12/2011: Star Trek Ongoing #4 - 12,746 (-4.1%)
01/2012: Star Trek Ongoing #5 - 12,178 (-4.5%)

IDW would be hoping that the sales drops would be getting smaller, but they’re going the other way at the moment.

146. Kirby Genesis (Dynamite)
05/2011: Kirby Genesis #0 - 36,429
06/2011: Kirby Genesis #1 - 26,039 (-28.5%)

10/2011: Kirby Genesis #4 - 14,030 (-9.9%)
01/2012: Kirby Genesis #5 - 12,174 (-13.2%)

Another one where the drops are getting bigger as the book goes on.

12/2011: Chew #22 - 12,296 (-0.01%)
01/2012: Chew #23 - 12,012 (-2.3%)

This on the other hand is very stable. The new issue sells within a couple of hundred copies of the beginning of the year. All four trades chart, all selling 350-600 copies or so.

148. Lobster Johnson The Burning Hand (Dark Horse)
01/2012: The Burning Hand #1 - 12,004

This sells 5,000 less copies than the last number one, but that was 5 years ago. This is a couple of thousand copies higher than BPRD.

149. Peanuts (Boom!)
11/2011: Peanuts #0 - 22,644
01/2012: Peanuts #1 - 11,994 (-47.0%)

A pretty hefty drop, but it’ll be a couple of issues until orders match sales.

150. King Conan Phoenix On The Sword (Dark Horse)
01/2012: Phoenix On The Sword #1 - 11,338

The bestselling Conan book for a month, before the new Brian Wood/ Becky Cloonan series starts next month. I think that one will do pretty well.

151. GFT Alice In Wonderland (Zenescope)
01/2012: GFT Alice In Wonderland #1 - 11,317

This is an excellent figure for Zenescope, their best selling comic in a while. This is very much aiming at their core audience.

152. Warlord of Mars Dejah Thoris
03/2011: Dejah Thoris #1 - 18,432
04/2011: Dejah Thoris #2 - 14,286 (-22.5%)

11/2011: Dejah Thoris #8 - 11,419 (-7.1%)
12/2011: -
01/2012: Dejah Thoris #9 - 10,989 (-3.8%)

As I mentioned above, Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc are suing over the Warlords books, this one in particular, as they feel they have the name trademarked. They’re also not keen on the nude cover variants Dynamite have been putting out…

01/2012: Artifacts #13 - 10,780 (+17.9%)
01/2012: Artifacts Origins One Shot - 5,988 (-4.4%)

A rise for the last part of the first storyline, as the Top Cow universe is remade. Drawn by Dale Keown, shame much of it was blank space. The Origins one-shot was a collection of the 2-page origin back-ups from the series, so actually sells pretty well.

01/2012: Jennifer Blood #8 - 10,767 (-6.5%)

Now we may be seeing the delayed drop that comes with Garth Ennis leaving the book. Still there’s a spin-off prequel, Ninjettes, which ties into the current storyline coming.

12/2011: Hell on Earth: Russia #4 - 10,517 (-2.6%)
01/2012: Hell on Earth: Russia #5 - 10,244 (-2.6%)

That’s an incredibly consistent monthly drop for the last 3 months. It’s perilously close to dropping below 10,000 copies, but will no-doubt get a small boost with the new mini-series launching next month.

161. Vampirella (Dynamite)

176. Vampirella vs Dracula (Dynamite)
01/2012: Vampirella Vs Dracula #1 - 8,710

The drops continue for the main book, while Dynamite take a page from DC’s book and launch a new series based on a throwaway Alan Moore story. Those are okay sales, but it does reprint the Moore story, which I think was drawn by Gary Frank.

163. Infestation (IDW)

10/2011: Infestation: Outbreak #4 -???? (???)
01/2012: Infestation 2 #1 - 9,771

Quite a bit lower than the last series started, but it’ll be the crossover parts that’ll sell better this time around you’d think.

Surprisingly decent sales, not that far behind the first series. A bad second issue drop could scupper things though.

166. Morning Glories (Image)

Still dropping, but at a fairly slow pace, and the collections chart every month.

169. True Blood (IDW)
01/2011: -

12/2011: True Blood French Quarter #4 - 9,637 (-4.8%)
01/2012: True Blood French Quarter #5 - 9,260 (-3.9%)

The bloom is definitely off this rose, but again this is a book that presumably has a decent book market.

171. Voltron (Dynamite)
12/2011: Voltron #1 - 15,001
01/2012: Voltron #2 - 8,990 (-40.1%)

A big drop, but average for a Dynamite book, and this is still higher than you’d expect this property to sell at.

173. GI Joe Real American Hero (IDW)

12/2011: Real American Hero #173 - 8,632 (-7.3%)
01/2012: Real American Hero #174 - 8,926 (+3.4%)

The retro-GI Joe book gets a bit of a rise this month, which would suggest that maybe some of last month’s sales slipped into this month.

A big-ish drop this month, but still good figures.

A slight rise, overall very solid.

187. Godzilla Legends (IDW)

12/2011: Godzilla Legends #2 - 8,465 (-18.1%)
01/2012: Godzilla Legends #3 - 8,012 (-5.4%)

The main series is cancelled with the next issue, to be re-launched later this year.

178. Flash Gordon Zeitgeist (Dynamite)
11/2011: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #1 - 18,288
01/2012: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #2 - 8,611 (-52.9%)

Another big Dynamite drop, more than I would have thought, but this is still in retailer orders rather than actual sales.

180. Hellraiser (Boom!)

12/2011: Hellraiser #8 - 9,059 (-2.2%)
01/2012: Hellraiser #9 - 8,382 (-7.5%)

It looked like it might be stabilizing, but it drops quite badly this month.

01/2012: Cobra #9 - 8,249 (-1.6%)
01/2012: Cobra Annual 2012 Origin Of Cobra Commander #1 - 7,235

The two lesser spin-offs are fairly flat this month, with the Cobra Annual introducing the origin of new Cobra Commander.

184. Severed (Image)
08/2011: Severed #1 - 10,573 (14,411)

01/2012: Severed #6 - 8,047 (-3.1%)

The penultimate issue of this series, has done pretty well considering it’s a depression-era horror book, not exactly a popular genre.

 185, 231. Green Hornet (Dynamite)
01/2011: Green Hornet #12 - 13,913

01/2012: Green Hornet #21 - 8,043 (-3.1%)
01/2012: Green Hornet Annual #2 - 5,226 (-35.0%)

Still dropping a little faster than is comfortable, while the annual does alright, if not stellar sales.

186. Whispers (Image)
01/2012: Whispers #1 - 8,013

A solo book from Joshua Luna, one half of the Luna Brothers, a little higher than their last series, The Sword ended. It’s maybe been a little lost in the recent raft of Image debuts.

188. Irredeemable (Boom)
01/2010: Irredeemable #10 - 13,106

12/2011: Irredeemable #32 - 8,612 (+4.7%)
01/2012: Irredeemable #33 - 7,923(-8.0%)

A big drop as the slightly odd crossover (that didn’t really cross over) with Incorruptible ends. This shipped in the first week of the year, and I wonder if maybe a few copies shipped in the previous week, and missed the chart.

190. Ferals (Avatar)
01/2012: Ferals #1 - 7,802

David Lapham’s twisted Werewolf book (do Avatar publish books that aren’t twisted?) launched with decent figures for a new property, higher than his other recent series, Caligula.

191. The Strain (Dark Horse)
12/2012: The Strain #1 - 16,023
01/2012: The Strain #2 - 7,650 (-52.3%)

A big drop, but considering that the first issue was only a dollar, not as big a drop as it could have been. Orchid, the last dollar debut, dropped off 58% for its second issue.

The final issue takes a large drop, but the new bi-weekly series will certainly get a big boost, as Garth Ennis returns.

194. Warlord of Mars: Fall of Barsoom (Dynamite)
07/2011: Fall of Barsoom #1 - 11,192

Still doing okay, considering it’s an origin of Barsoom book.

01/2012: Mega Man #8 - 7,540 (+6.3%)

A nice jump up, for no apparent reason. The first trade sells an unexpectedly small 457 copies.

197. The Strange Talent of Luther Strode (Image)

01/2012: The Strange Talent of Luther Strode #4 - 7,288 (-0.3%)

Very flat, only 24 copies less than last month. This will almost certainly do quite well in trade, I think.

Not doing great, although it seems to be coming out regularly again. The one-shot, a satire on the bad-girl genre, sells reasonable numbers

Maybe flattening out.

Steed And Mrs Peel (Boom!)
01/2012: Steed And Mrs Peel #1 - 6,937

A reprint of Grant Morrison and Ian Gibson’s series from over 20 years ago. It’s good stuff, shame they wouldn’t re-color it, it’s a bit blurry looking.

Not great sales, but the collection will be coming out alongside the new game in March, and will no doubt do gang-busters.

No Sonic this month, and despite the drop this book is still selling better than a year ago.

209. Kirby Genesis Dragonsbane (Dynamite)
01/2012: Kirby Genesis Dragonsbane #1 - 6,675

The third tie-in, selling a bit behind the other two (which didn’t ship this month), fairly predictably as I haven’t even heard of these characters.

12/2011: Dark Shadows #2 - 7,407 (-18.5%)
01/2012: Dark Shadows #3 - 6,337 (-14.5%)

Slightly less of a drop this month, not doing amazingly well but this will no doubt be intended for a collection around the time of Tim Burton’s upcoming film.

This has dropped over 50% in a year, but it’s been relatively stable for the past six months.

219. Prophet (Image)
01/2012: Prophet #21 - 6,029

This has been massively under-ordered, which I suspect may be down to a slightly aging retailer population, and is going to a second print. Rob Liefeld seems to have hit on an interesting formula, putting indie creators onto his old Maximum/ Awesome titles, but they’re from titles that the vast majority of comic shops wouldn’t have ordered in the past, like Brandon Graham’s King City, and Ross Campbell’s Wet Moon. I think it would have done better if he’d restarted them with new issue ones, particularly as I can’t find any trace of Prophet 12-20 ever having been published. I suspect the same thing will happen with Glory next month.

220. Queen Sonja (Dynamite)

Another on that’s dropping pretty fast, but at least seems to be heading towards stability.

Ouch, surely this titles can’t continue for much longer. It’s not in the new previews, but I’ve not seen anything about it being cancelled. Then again, Infinite is still being solicited and apparently that’s no more.

Well, as predicted last month, over half of the sales slipped into this month. What I didn’t expect was for it to happen again this month. I’ve not bothered doing the percentages for issue five, we’ll see next month. It’s doing very well though, with sales increasing since issue 3.

01/2012: The Balance Lost #7 - 4,603 (-6.6%)

Probably not too much longer for this world, I’m not sure if Moorcock’s characters will ever do particularly well in comic form.

01/2012: Robocop Road Trip #1 - 4,334
01/2012: Robocop Road Trip #2 - 3,401 (-21.5%)

Not too bad a second issue drop for a Dynamite book, but then it didn’t start that well.

253. Nancy in Hell (Image)
01/2012: Nancy In Hell On Earth #1 - 4,323

Starts around the same level as the end of the last series a couple of years ago.

256. Dark Matter (Dark Horse)
01/2012: Dark Matter #1 - 4,261

A new sci-fi book from Dark Horse written by a couple of Stargate writers. Hasn’t really set the world on fire sales-wise.

12/2011: Avengelyne #5 - ???? (???)
01/2012: Avengelyne #6 - 4,099 (???)

Although it failed to chart the last two months, this seems to be fairly stable, and has only lost 170 copies over the last three issues.

261. Memorial (IDW)
12/2011: Memorial #1 - 7,100
01/2012: Memorial #2 - 4,073 (-42.6%)

Hmm, clearly aiming at recreating the success of Locke & Key, currently this seems to be missing that mark.

270. The Activity (Image)
12/2011: The Activity #1 - 5,269
01/2012: The Activity #2 - 3,512 (30.3%)

Although it misses the chart more often than not it’s very stable, and does quite well in trade I understand. It’s one of my favorite books, so long may it continue!

Not too bad for an old licence, you’d think APE are aiming for strong book sales.

289. Atlas Unified (Ardden)
01/2012: Atlas Unified #1 - 2,990

It looks like the relaunched Atlas is on hiatus at the moment, with this crossover book coming out from UK publisher Ardden, and written by the under-rated Hourman & Authority writer Tom Peyer.

Difficult to tell, as so many issues have missed the chart, but this seems to be fairly stable.

Another one that seems pretty stable, it’s only lost 360 copies or so over the last seven issues. Definitely one that is supported by its book sales, the collections do very well I understand.

Two more issues to go and then digital only. This must have been a month without one of the special Yu Gi Oh cards that increase sales.

293. Nowhere Man (Dynamite)
01/2011: Nowhere Man #1 - 2,866

Written by TV writer Mark Guggenheim, this was originally going to be a Virgin comics book, with Paul Gulacy on art and Hugh Jackman involved in some way.

294. Near Death (Image)

Not doing great, but Jay Faerber’s book is still being solicited.

295. Legend of Oz The Wicked West (Big Dog Ink)
11/2011: Legend of Oz The Wicked West #1 - 5,076
12/2011: -
01/2012: Legend of Oz The Wicked West #2 - 2,853 (-43.8%)

A big drop, but probably still decent figures for the neophyte publisher.

This alternate universe book following up on the “marriages” to Betty and Veronica seems to be very stable, only dropping a hundred copies in the last 7 issues.

298. 7 Warriors (Boom)
11/2011: 7 Warriors #1 - 4,710
12/2011: 7 Warriors #2 - 3,191 (-32.2%)
01/2012: 7 Warriors #3 - 2,790 (-12.6%)

Levelling out, this is a reprint of a French book, so is probably pretty cheap to produce.

I really like this book, it should be doing better. I’d recommend checking out the collections if you like good fantasy books.

The last issue, and probably another one that’s over for the moment.

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. I think one of Vampirellas problems is the fact they have gone through about 3 or 4 artists already. The first artist was very good and should have been put on rotating arcs if he couldn’t do a monthly book.

  2. Er… maybe the places after the 200 are not that important (I kid) but the formatting of the lists got applied to the comments as well.

  3. I’m really digging ‘Rachel Rising’ by Terry Moore. Of course, my sales wouldn’t be tracked on here, as I got them on comixology.

The first issue was only 99 cents! and the remaining issues were only 1.99/each. (if I bought them off the stand, they would be $3.99/each).

For those of you who don’t know about the series, the premise is this: a woman crawls out of a shallow grave with a mark across her throat.

She was murdered and buried, but is now, somehow, alive! And she wants to find the person who murdered her.

Throw in a mysterious blonde woman who drives people to kill and a murderous young lady, and you have some mysterious happenings.

    Give it a shot!

  4. Plans for starting a new Eerie comic are announced in Creepy #7. Strange, since Creepy isn’t doing very well. Maybe they want to keep it around as a sort of promotion for the hardcover collections?

  5. Lord of the Jungle #1 was only $1.

Fatale #1 has now had a 4th printing.

It might be worth pointing out that The Boys is ending later this year.

Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #1 was also $1, so a big drop to #2 is to be expected.

Irredeemable is ending at #37 and Incorruptible at #30.

The previous issues of Prophet were 1-11 of the original series, 1-8 of a second series, and #1 of a third series that only ever had that issue out.

The shipping problems with Rachel Rising used to happen pretty frequently with Echo as well. I’m guessing it’s down to who Terry Moore is using as a printer.

  6. what is Boom! going to have left to publish after Waid’s books are gone? Their lineup is shrinking and shrinking it seems. Dang…

  7. Peanuts # 0 was a dollar book as well which might account for the drastic drop between it and issue # 1.

  8. Hey Matt, welcome back! Cheers for that, I missed the Incorruptible/ Irredeemable news, it must have hit right about when I started the column that month as well! I can’t say I’m that surprised, both books seemed to be a bit aimless recently. As for the Boys, I did mention it last month, and there are still 9 or so issues to go.
Prophet, I vaguely remember the Stephen Platt stuff, that must have been the second series.
Sorry for the format problem folks, being fixed at the moment!

  9. “I think it would have done better if he’d restarted them with new issue ones, particularly as I can’t find any trace of Prophet 12-20 ever having been published. I suspect the same thing will happen with Glory next month.”

I thought that was a weird choice too. I saw this on the stands and was wondering if I had overlooked this series.. for the last two years.

  10. So Kevin Keller’s Wedding only had 3000 attend? I thought it would of sold more.

Really enjoying my monthly fix of TMNT. Glad its one of the top sellers. The Raphael one shot was great – and had some classic villians return, pre mutagen that is! It was great to see! :)

Planet of the Apes doesn’t look to be doing so great on the other hand. On the plus side, Boom must still be happy with it giving the Betrayal mini a sequel. And I am glad for it! Its an amazing read. It really feels like a prequel to the original Heston movie! Everyone who love POTA should give it a try!

  11. “So Kevin Keller’s Wedding only had 3000 attend? I thought it would of sold more.”

    1) The Direct Market does not order many Archie copies. The magazine probably has a lower fan following, plus a higher price, so retailers are less likely to gamble on the hype.

    2) The media did not discover this until after it shipped, and after the “million” moms started their boycott. Reorders might appear next month. Does Archie report circulation figures on their magazines?

Strawberry Shortcake is a new franchise. It’s been revamped… older pre-teen characters, no Purple Pieman, and stories that this 40-something male enjoyed!

  12. Oh dear, the rest of Atlas Unified and the most recently solicited Avengelynes have been cancelled by the publishers.
