It’s pretty much as you were in a fairly quiet month for new books. Boom’s dollar-book Deathmatch and the return of Hellboy, alongside a new Adventure Time spin-off and Brian Wood’s new book Mara are the notable debuts. Walking Dead, Saga & My Little Pony top the chart again, elsewhere the Image Firsts reprint programme features strongly, and a few long running licensed books end ahead of relaunches.
155 indie books charted this month, up on last month’s 151. The bottom book sold 4,649, up on last month’s 4,341. They sold approximately 1,543,544 in total, down on last month’s 1,615,140. Average sales are 9,958 per book, well down on last month’s 10,696. UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.
Another poor month for risers. Out of the 155 books, only 21 went up in sales and 112 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.
Image are the indie publisher once again this month, with fantastic 9.10% dollar share and a 8.49% market share, IDW have a 5.82% dollar share and 4.79% market share, Dark Horse have a 5.49% dollar share and a 4.56% market share, Dynamite have a 2.60% dollar share and 2.93% market share and Boom! Have a 1.69% dollar share and 1.88% market share, all up apart from Image.
Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.
Here’s this month’s top twenty indie graphic novels.

The big GN news this month is that eight of the top ten books are indie titles. Hell, seven of them are Image books, who, thanks to the nine Walking Dead books, take thirteen of the chart places this month. Of the non-WD books, Saga continues to perform very well, with new Chew and Fatale collections coming in just above the first collection of Revival. Dark Horse get a three entries with Buffy, BPRD and Star Wars, while newbies Valiant have their first collection of X-O Manowar chart fairly high. The chart is rounded off by a couple of the manga regulars.
300. The Lone Ranger Snake of Iron (Dynamite) 07/2012: Snake of Iron #1 - 6,081 08/2012: Snake of Iron #2 - ???? 09/2012: Snake of Iron #3 - ???? 10-11/2012: - 12/2012: Snake of Iron #4 - 4,649 (???)
Making a brief reappearance in the chart, with a collection due right around the release of the movie.
299. Dark Shadows (Dynamite) 12/2011: Dark Shadows #2 - 7,407 ==== 01/2012: Dark Shadows #3 - 6,337 (-14.5%) 03/2012: Dark Shadows #4 - 6,050 (-4.5%) 04/2012: - 05/2012: Dark Shadows #5 - 5,746 (-5.0%) 06/2012: - 07/2012: Dark Shadows #6 - 5,283 (-8.1%) 08/2012: - 09/2012: Dark Shadows #7 - 5,265 (-0.3%) 10/2012: Dark Shadows #8 - 5,161 (-2.0%) 10/2012: Dark Shadows #9 - ???? (???) 11/2012: Dark Shadows #10 - 5,027 (???) 12/2012: Dark Shadows #11 - 4,661 (-7.3%)
I have an inkling that this may be the last appearance on this chart for this title.
298. Empowered Special (Dark Horse) 12/2009: Empowered One-Shot - 8,361 06/2011: Empowered Special #2 - 5,898 (-29.5%) 12/2012: Empowered Special #3 - 4,676 (-20.7%)
The excellent Empowered makes an irregular appearance in a comic, but most of the audience are probably waiting for the trade.
294. Soulfire (Aspen) 12/2011: - ==== 01/2012: Soulfire Vol 3. #6 - 4,723 (-6.6%) 02/2012: Soulfire Vol 3. #7 - 4,414 (-6.5%) 03-05/2012: - 06/2012: Soulfire Primer #1 - 4,954 06/2012: Soulfire Hope #1 - 4,660 07/2012: Soulfire Faith #1 - 4,543 07/2012: Soulfire Despair #1 - 4,524 07/2012: Soulfire Grace #1 - 4,431 07/2012: Soulfire Power #1 - 4,330 08/2012: Soulfire Vol 4 #1 - 5,864 (+35.4%) 09/2012: Soulfire Vol 4 #2 - 4,824 (-17.7%) 10-11/2012: - 12/2012: Soulfire Vol 4 #3 - 4,763 (-1.3%)
Settling down it would appear.
293. Supurbia (Boom!) 03/2012: Supurbia #1 - 4,626 04/2012: Supurbia #2 - ???? (???%) 05/2012: Supurbia #3 - ???? (???%) 06/2012: Supurbia #4 - 3,920 (???%) 07-10/2012: - 11/2012: Supurbia Ongoing #1 - 6,288 (+60.4%) 12/2012: Supurbia Ongoing #2 - 4,773 (-24.1%)
Ouch, a biggish drop, but still above where the last series started.
292. Popeye (IDW) 04/2012: Popeye #1 - 12,250 05/2012: - 06/2012: Popeye #2 - 9,983 (-18.5%) 07/2012: Popeye #3 - 8,849 (-11.4%) 08/2012: Popeye #4 - 7,726 (-12.7%) 09/2012: Popeye #5 - 6,719 (-13.0%) 10/2012: Popeye #6 - 6,698 (-0.3%) 11/2012: Popeye #7 - 5,417 (-19.1%) 12/2012: Popeye #8 - 4,866 (-10.2%)
Cancelled with issue 12, so my commenters tell me.
290. Freelancers (Boom) 11/2012: Freelancers #1 - 14,085 12/2012: Freelancers #2 - 4,904 (-65.2%)
A reeeaaal long drop-off, but then the first issue was only a dollar.
288. Hellraiser Road Below (Boom!) 11/2012: Hellraiser Road Below #1 - 5,647 11/2012: Hellraiser Road Below #2 - 4,896 (-13.3%) 12/2012: Hellraiser Road Below #3 - 4,921 (+0.5%)
Levelling right out, while the new series starts in February.
287. Stormdogs (Image) 11/2012: Stormdogs #1 - 8,389 12/2012: Stormdogs #2 - 4,939 (-41.1%)
That’s a very bad second issue drop.
286. The Creep (Dark Horse) 08/2012: The Creep #0 - 8,185 09/2012: The Creep #1 - 7,236 (-11.6%) 10/2012: The Creep #2 - 5,958 (-17.7%) 11/2012: The Creep #3 - 5,375 (-9.8%) 12/2012: The Creep #4 - 4,951 (-7.9%)
Ending pretty far down, but this was always a bit niche.
285. Bionic Woman (Dynamite) 04/2012: Bionic Woman #1 - 9,154 05/2012: Bionic Woman #2 - 7,053 (-23.0%) 06-07/2012: - 08/2012: Bionic Woman #3 - 6,565 (-6.9%) 09/2012: Bionic Woman #4 - 5,928 (-9.7%) 10/2012: Bionic Woman #5 - 5,653 (-4.6%) 11/2012: - 12/2012: Bionic Woman #6 - 4,960 (-12.3%)
Hurtling towards an end, I think.
284. Darkness (Image) 12/2011: Darkness #96 - 5,939 ==== 01/2012: Darkness #97 - 5,328 (-10.3%) 01/2012: Darkness #98 - 5,316 (-0.2%) 02/2012: Darkness #99 - 5,893 (+10.9%) 02/2012: Darkness #100 - 11,363 (+92.8%) 03/2012: Darkness #101 - 7,214 (-36.5%) 04/2012: Darkness #102 - 5,963 (-17.3%) 05/2012: Darkness #103 - 6,140 (+3.0%) 06/2012: Darkness #104 - 5,823 (-5.2%) 07/2012: Darkness #105 - 5,515 (-5.3%) 08/2012: - 09/2012: Darkness #106 - 5,113 (-7.3%) 10/2012: Darkness #107 - 5,296 (+3.6%) 11/2012: Darkness #108 - 5,176 (-2.3%) 12/2012: Darkness #109 - 4,961 (-4.2%)
Back into terminal decline. Probably time to give the character a bit of a rest.
283. Dark Shadows Vampirella (Dynamite) 08/2012:Dark Shadows Vampirella #1 - 7,899 09/2012:Dark Shadows Vampirella #2 - 6,497 (-17.7%) 10/2012:Dark Shadows Vampirella #3 - 5,566 (-14.3%) 11/2012:Dark Shadows Vampirella #4 - 5,125 (-7.9%) 12/2012:Dark Shadows Vampirella #5 - 4,962 (-3.2%)
Levelling out, though at a fairly low level.
282. Army of Darkness (Dynamite) 02/2012: Army of Darkness #1 - 9,164 03/2012: Army of Darkness #2 - 7,037 (-23.2%) 04/2012: Army of Darkness #3 - 6,382 (-9.3%) 05/2012: Army of Darkness #4 - 5,972 (-6.4%) 06-08:2012: - 09/2012: Army of Darkness #5 - 5,463 (-8.5%) 10/2012: - 11/2012: Army of Darkness #6 - ???? (???) 12/2012: Army of Darkness #7 - 4,963 (???)
Dropping pretty quickly.
281. Battlefields (Dynamite) 11/2012: Battlefields #1 - 5,863 12/2012: Battlefields #2 - 4,966 (-15.3%)
It’s utterly criminal that a book of this caliber can sell in such low numbers. I guess the collections must do well.
278. Borderlands Origins (IDW) 11/2012: Borderlands Origins #1 - 6,409 12/2012: Borderlands Origins #2 - 5,040 (-21.4%)
The computer game tie-in suffers an average second issue drop, but this has done a fair bit better than is represented here. The first issue is now onto its third printing, the second issue is on its second.
277. Ferals (Avatar) 01/2012: Ferals #1 - 7,802 02/2012: Ferals #2 - 6,008 (-23.0%) 02/2012: Ferals #3 - 6,159 (+2.5%) 03/2012: - 04/2012: Ferals #4 - 6,043 (-1.9%) 05/2012: Ferals #5 - 5,624 (-6.9%) 06/2012: - 07/2012: Ferals #6 - 5,883 (+4.6%) 08/2012: Ferals #7 - 5,690 (-3.3%) 08/2012: Ferals #8 - 5,525 (-2.9%) 09/2012: - 10/2012: Ferals #9 - 5,406 (-2.2%) 11/2012: - 12/2012: Ferals #10 - 5,045 (-6.7%)
276. Caligula (Avatar) 12/2011: - ==== 01/2012: Caligula #6 - 5,212 (-3.9%) 02-11/2012: - 12/2012: Caligula Heart of Rome #1 - 5,055 (-3.0%)
Two David Lapham Avatar series that aren’t exactly setting the charts on fire. They are particular examples of the sex and violence (and often violent sex) formula that Avatar were known for before the likes of Ellis & Ennis raised the bar a little. As much as I like Lapham, who’s Stray Bullets is still deeply missed, these are not up to that standard.
275. Dark Horse Presents (Dark Horse) 12/2011: Dark Horse Presents #7 - 7,849 (+11.9%) ==== 01/2012: - 02/2012: Dark Horse Presents #8 - 7,936 (+1.1%) 02/2012: Dark Horse Presents #9 - 7,751 (-2.3%) 03/2012: Dark Horse Presents #10 - 6,881 (-11.2%) 04/2012: Dark Horse Presents #11 - 7,118 (+3.4%) 05/2012: Dark Horse Presents #12 - 7,281 (+2.3%) 06/2012: Dark Horse Presents #13 - 7,132 (-2.0%) 07/2012: Dark Horse Presents #14 - 6,448 (-9.6%) 08/2012: Dark Horse Presents #15 - 6,154 (-4.6%) 09/2012: Dark Horse Presents #16 - 5,765 (-6.3%) 10/2012: Dark Horse Presents #17 - 5,546 (-3.8%) 11/2012: Dark Horse Presents #18 - 5,400 (-2.6%) 12/2012: Dark Horse Presents #19 - 5,123 (-5.1%)
Still dropping readers a bit swiftly, as ever this has differing economics underlying the sales, being an eight-dollar book.
272. The Lone Ranger (Dynamite) 01/2012: The Lone Ranger #1 - 9,635 02/2012: The Lone Ranger #2 - 7,151 (-25.8%) 03/2012: The Lone Ranger #3 - 6,476 (-9.4%) 04/2012: The Lone Ranger #4 - 6,071 (-6.3%) 05/2012: The Lone Ranger #5 - 6,044 (-0.4%) 06/2012: The Lone Ranger #6 - 5,830 (-3.5%) 07/2012: The Lone Ranger #7 - 5,762 (-1.2%) 08/2012: The Lone Ranger #8 - 5,703 (-1.0%) 09/2012: The Lone Ranger #9 - 5,451 (-4.4%) 10/2012: The Lone Ranger #10 - 5,394 (-10.5%) 11/2012: - 12/2012: The Lone Ranger #11 - 5,216 (-3.3%)
A bit more stable this month.
271. Green Hornet (Dynamite) 12/2011: Green Hornet #20 - 8,297 ==== 01/2012: Green Hornet #21 - 8,043 (-3.1%) 01/2012: Green Hornet Annual #2 - 5,226 (-35.0%) 02/2012: Green Hornet #22 - 7,789 (-3.2%) 03/2012: Green Hornet #23 - 7,087 (-9.0%) 04/2012: Green Hornet #24 - 6,751 (-4.7%) 05/2012: Green Hornet #25 - 6,641 (-1.6%) 06/2012: - 07/2012: Green Hornet #26 - 6,413 (-3.4%) 08/2012: Green Hornet #27 - 6,071 (-5.3%) 09/2012: Green Hornet #28 - 5,939 (-2.2%) 10/2012: Green Hornet #29 - 5,812 (-2.1%) 10/2012: Green Hornet #30 - 5,669 (-2.5%) 11/2012: Green Hornet #31 - 5,458 (-3.7%) 12/2012: Green Hornet #32 - 5,217 (-4.4%)
Cancelled (not sure which issue from), with Mark Waid coming in to save the day!
268. Grimm Fairy Tales: Myths & Legends (Zenescope) 12/2011: Myths and Legends #10 - 6,242 ==== 01/2012: Myths and Legends #11 - 6,190 (-0.8%) 02/2012: Myths and Legends #12 - 5,922 (-4.3%) 02/2012: Myths and Legends #13 - 5,734 (-3.2%) 03/2012: Myths and Legends #14 - 5,615 (-1.8%) 04/2012: Myths and Legends #15 - 5,359 (-4.6%) 05/2012: Myths and Legends #16 - 5,591 (+4.3%) 05/2012: Myths and Legends #17 - 5,761 (+3.0%) 06/2012: - 07/2012: Myths and Legends #18 - 5,720 (-0.7%) 08/2012: Myths and Legends #19 - 5,547 (-3.0%) 09/2012: Myths and Legends #20 - 5,674 (+2.3%) 10/2012: Myths and Legends #21 - 5,552 (-2.1%) 10/2012: Myths and Legends #22 - 5,544 (-0.1%) 11/2012: Myths and Legends #23 - 5,319 (-4.1%) 12/2012: Myths and Legends #24 - 5,269 (-0.9%)
Pretty stable this month.
267. Queen Sonja (Dynamite) 12/2011: Queen Sonja #25 - 6,254 ==== 01/2012: Queen Sonja #26 - 6,016 (-3.8%) 02/2012: Queen Sonja #27 - 6,097 (+1.3%) 03/2012: - 04/2012: Queen Sonja #28 - 6,026 (-1.2%) 05/2012: Queen Sonja #29 - 5,861 (-2.7%) 06/2012: - 07/2012: Queen Sonja #30 - 5,688 (-3.0%) 08/2012: Queen Sonja #31 - 5,526 (-2.8%) 09/2012: Queen Sonja #32 - 5,454 (-1.3%) 10-11/2012: - 12/2012: Queen Sonja #33 - 5,269 (-3.4%)
After a few months of stability this is firmly heading downwards again.
265. Carbon Grey 03/2012: Carbon Grey Origins #2 - 4,199 (-35.8%) 04-06/2012: - 07/2012: Carbon Grey v2 #1 - 6,916 (+64.7%) 08-11/2012: - 12/2012: Carbon Grey v2 #2 - 5,302 (-23.3%)
A bigger-than-average drop, unsurprising considering the delay between issues.
263. Bart Simpson Comics (Bongo) 12/2011: Bart Simpson Comics #66 - 5,303 ==== 01/2012: Bart Simpson Comics #67 - 5,192 (-2.1%) 02/2012: Bart Simpson Comics #68 - 5,322 (+2.5%) 03/2012: Bart Simpson Comics #69 - 5,214 (-2.0%) 04/2012: Bart Simpson Comics #70 - 5,281 (+1.3%) 05/2012: Bart Simpsons Pal Milhouse #1 - 7,862 05/2012: Bart Simpson Comics #71 - 5,418 (+2.6%) 06/2012: Bart Simpson Comics #72 - 5,552 (+2.5%) 07/2012: Bart Simpson Comics #73 - 5,502 (-0.9%) 08/2012: Bart Simpson Comics #74 - 5,472 (-0.5%) 09/2012: Bart Simpson Comics #75 - 5,348 (-0.5%) 10/2012: Bart Simpson Comics #76 - 5,495 (+2.7%) 11/2012: Bart Simpson Comics #77 - 5,470 (-0.5%) 12/2012: Bart Simpson Comics #78 - 5,376 (-1.7%)
Stable.
262. To Hell You Ride (Dark Horse) 12/2012: To Hell You Ride #1 - 5,382
A new horror book from veteran actor and genre hero, Lance Henrikssen, drawn by the similarly veteran Tom Mandrake. It’s a bit ropey, unfortunately.
261. GFT Sleepy Hollow (Zenescope) 10/2012: GFT Sleepy Hollow #1 - 6,725 11/2012: GFT Sleepy Hollow #2 - 6,216 (-7.6%) 12/2012: GFT Sleepy Hollow #3 - 5,393 (-13.2%)
Falling badly this month, despite the strong-ish start.
260. Fathom (Aspen) 12/2011: Fathom Vol 4 #3 - 6,816 ==== 01/2012: - 02/2012: Fathom Vol 4 #4 - 6,401 (-6.1%) 03/2012: Fathom Vol 4 #5 - 6,221 (-2.8%) 04-05/2012: - 06/2012: Fathom Vol 4 #6 - 5,773 (-7.2%) 07-08/2012: - 09/2012: Fathom Vol 4 #7 - 5,303 (-8.1%) 10-11/2012: - 12/2012: Fathom Vol 4 #8 - 5,414 (+2.1%)
A little increase, which is encouraging.
257. This really isn’t looking like stabilizing any time soon, a shame as those who are buying it seem to like it. Maybe Masks will help a bit.
255. Guarding The Globe (Image) 09/2012: Guarding The Globe #1 - 10,183 10/2012: Guarding The Globe #2 - 7,104 (-30.2%) 11/2012: Guarding The Globe #3 - 5,871 (-17.4%) 12/2012: Guarding The Globe #4 - 5,302 (-9.7%)
Cancelled with issue five, due to apocalyptic events in Invincible. And these sales probably didn’t help.
254. Prophet (Image) 01/2012: Prophet #21 - 6,029 02/2012: Prophet #22 - 6,030 (0%) 03/2012: Prophet #23 - 6,289 (+4.3%) 04/2012: Prophet #24 - 6,639 (+5.6%) 05/2012: Prophet #25 - 6,390 (-3.7%) 06/2012: Prophet #26 - 6,275 (-1.8%) 07/2012: Prophet #27 - 6,117 (-2.5%) 08/2012: Prophet #28 - 5,969 (-2.4%) 09/2012: Prophet #29 - 5,991 (+0.4%) 10/2012: Prophet #30 - 5,927 (-1.1%) 11/2012: Prophet #31 - 5,771 (-2.6%) 12/2012: Prophet #32 - 5,642 (-2.2%)
Really very solid, and still gaining a lot of good word-of-mouth.
253, 270. Colder (Dark Horse) 11/2012: Colder #1 - 7,670 12/2012: Colder #2 - 5,683 (-25.9%) 12/2012: Colder #3 - 5,217 (-8.2%)
Stabilizing, if a little low.

A small increase for the most obvious book Zenescope have ever published.

Not a great second issue drop, but the word of mouth has been reasonable good about this .

The drops look like they may be accelerating again. The story sort-of feels like it might be approaching a place to end.

A bit of a drop, but still a couple of thousand above where Usagi was. I suspect a relaunch of Usagi would do rather well, compared to where it was.

Gaining back almost all of last month’s losses, so I suspect some of those sales were simply mislaid at the time.

I think this may have been cancelled?
213. Nowhere Men (Image) 11/2012: Nowhere Men #1 - 11,815 12/2012: Nowhere Men #2 - 7,368 (-37.6%)
A big drop off, but every issue thus far is in multiple printings, so I think the retailers underestimated this one.

A misprint/ borderline-offensive gag/ licensee-issue has delayed issue #11, but a cover showcase sells pretty decent numbers to plug the gap.

Mars Attacks other IDW properties over the next couple of months, to reasonable results. The main book keeps dropping at a precipitous rate.

Hmm, that’s not a very big number considering this is the first new Crow book from its creator in a very long time. Maybe they should have relaunched with this one instead.

Yikes, this is starting to plummet. Looks like the public might have had enough of John Carter for the moment.

Still not stabilizing, I’d be interested to know how the trade is selling.
172. Clone (Image) 11/2012: Clone #1 - 23,292 12/2012: Clone #2 - 11,144 (-52.2%)
Massive drop, but the first month sales were much higher than I was expecting.

A slight up-tick, this relaunch looks to be a solid hit.
169. Americas Got Powers (Image) 04/2012: Americas Got Powers #1 - 19,439 05/2012: Americas Got Powers #2 - 16,273 (-16.3%) 06-07/2012: - 08/2012: Americas Got Powers #3 - 13,393 (-17.7%) 09-11/2012: - 12/2012: Americas Got Powers #4 - 11,291 (-15.7%)
This is a surprise really, I can only imagine a lot of the audience has gotten sick of waiting for the issues and are going to get the trade. I wonder if the uniform covers haven’t hurt a bit, some customers might not actually realize it’s a new issue.
168. Star Wars Agent O/T Empire (Dark Horse) 12/2011: Agent O/T Empire Iron Eclipse #1 - 15,700 ==== 01/2012: AotE Agent Iron Eclipse #2 - 12,675 (-19.3%) 02/2012: AotE Agent Iron Eclipse #3 - 12,442 (-1.8%) 03/2012: AotE Agent Iron Eclipse #4 - 12,217 (-1.6%) 04/2012: AotE Agent Iron Eclipse #5 - 12,278 (+0.5%) 10/2012: AotE Agent Hard Targets #1 - 13,416 (+9.3%) 11/2012: AotE Agent Hard Targets #2 - 12,171 (-9.3%) 12/2012: AotE Agent Hard Targets #3 - 11,391 (-9.3%)

All of these books are doing okay, with the possible exception of Agent, which is remarkably consistent in its sales jumps. The new ongoing series is ultimately likely to sell almost as many copies alone as all four of these books put together.
167. Magic The Gathering (IDW) 02/2012: Magic The Gathering #1 - 28,858 02/2012: Magic The Gathering #2 - 23,849 (-17.4%) 03/2012: Magic The Gathering #3 - 20,078 (-15.8%) 04/2012: - 05/2012: Magic The Gathering #4 - 18,779 (-6.5%) 06/2012: MTG The Spell Thief #1 - 15,726 (-16.3%) 07/2012: - 08/2012: MTG The Spell Thief #2 - 14,007 (-10.9%) 09/2012: MTG The Spell Thief #3 - 12,717 (17,427)(-9.2%) 10/2012: - 11/2012: MTG The Spell Thief #4 - 12,329 (-3.1%) 12/2012: MTG Path of Vengeance #1 - 11,412 (-7.4%)
Now that’s not at all encouraging, for a new series to drop sales from the end of the previous one. At the same time, issue #3 of that previous series charts again almost 5,000 copies. I have absolutely no idea why.
164, 187. Great Pacific (Image) 11/2012: Great Pacific #1 - 15,143 12/2012: Great Pacific #2 - 11,740 (-22.5%) 12/2012: Great Pacific #3 - 9,608 (-18.2%)
This is taking time to settle down, whilst adding second and third prints to the earlier issues.
159. The Legend of Luther Strode (Image) 12/2011: The Strange Talent of Luther Strode #3 - 7,312 ==== 01/2012: TSToLuther Strode #4 - 7,288 (-0.3%) 02/2012: TSToLuther Strode #5 - 7,415 (+1.7%) 03/2012: TSToLuther Strode #6 - 8,048 (+8.5%) 12/2012: The Legend of Luther Strode #1 - 12,433 (+54.5%)
An excellent increase for the fan-favorite series.
158. Bloodshot (Valiant) 07/2012: Bloodshot #1 - 29,224 08/2012: Bloodshot #2 - 16,024 (-45.2%) 09/2012: Bloodshot #3 - 14,517 (-9.4%) 10/2012: Bloodshot #4 - 14,382 (-0.9%) 11/2012: Bloodshot #5 - 13,156 (-8.5%) 12/2012: Bloodshot #6 - 12,508 (-8.5%)

Still a bit volatile, these two books are about to take part in the first crossover of the new Valiant era, which may arrest those drops a little. I’d imagine they share a lot of the same audience though.
151. Conan (Dark Horse) 12/2007: Conan #47 - 22,140 12/2008: The Cimmerian #6 - 22,526 12/2009: - 12/2010: The Road of Kings #1 - 16,099 12/2011: The Road of Kings #11 - 10,958 ==== 01/2012: The Road of Kings #12 - 10,727 (-2.1%) 02/2012: Conan the Barbarian #1 - 20,569 (+91.8%) 03/2012: Conan the Barbarian #2 - 17,288 (-15.9%) 04/2012: Conan the Barbarian #3 - 17,261 (-0.1%) 05/2012: Conan the Barbarian #4 - 15,689 (-9.1%) 06/2012: Conan the Barbarian #5 - 15,393 (-1.9%) 07/2012: Conan the Barbarian #6 - 15,078 (-2.0%) 08/2012: Conan the Barbarian #7 - 14,908 (-1.1%) 09/2012: Conan the Barbarian #8 - 14,443 (-3.1%) 10/2012: Conan the Barbarian #9 - 14,314 (-0.9%) 11/2012: Conan the Barbarian #10 - 13,822 (-3.4%) 12/2012: Conan the Barbarian #11 - 13,436 (-2.8%)
Dropping a little more swiftly now. Is Brian Wood writing 5 or 6 monthly books at the moment?
147. Judge Dredd (IDW) 11/2012: Judge Dredd #1 - 32,266 12/2012: Judge Dredd #2 - 13,995 (-56.6%)
A massive drop, but there were less variant covers and the film inflated sales somewhat. This seems an okay figure.
144. X-O Manowar (Valiant) 05/2012: X-O Manowar #1 - 42,708 06/2012: X-O Manowar #2 - 21,261 (-50.2%) 07/2012: X-O Manowar #3 - 18,149 (-14.6%) 08/2012: X-O Manowar #4 - 16,882 (-7.0%) 09/2012: X-O Manowar #5 - 23,800 (+41.0%) 10/2012: X-O Manowar #6 - 16,299 (-31.5%) 11/2012: X-O Manowar #7 - 14,527 (-10.9%) 12/2012: X-O Manowar #8 - 14,462 (-0.4%)

X-O Manowar seems to be settling into a groove, while Archer and Armstrong seems to be the surprise hit. The Eternal Warrior makes his first appearance this month, which probably helped.
140. Vampirella Strikes (Dynamite) 12/2012: Vampirella Strikes #1 - 14,862
Selling more than double its parent book, but many covers are to be had here, things will likely drop a bit next month.

This evidently has a little way to go before it stabilizes. The rotating writers probably don’t help.

Slightly surprising that sales have gone down, but next month’s big issue will push sales up.

116. Shadowman (Valiant) 11/2012: Shadowman #1 - 25,048 12/2012: Shadowman #2 - 16,917(-32.5%)

This one is shedding readers a bit faster, but I think they’re likely just trade-waiting.

A very healthy increase, despite the delays this book’s been a solid hit.
69. Deathmatch (Boom!) 12/2012: Deathmatch #1 - 30,946
A dollar issue, and being released the week after Christmas have helped these sales condsiderably. Battle Royale style comics seem to be very much the thing at the moment following the success of The Hunger Games, so it’ll probably do okay in the long run.
54, 229. My Little Pony (IDW) 11/2012: - My Little Pony #1 - 80,128 (86,779) 12/2012: - My Little Pony #2 - 39,841 (-50.3%)
A hefty and expected drop for My Little Pony’s second issue, these are still awesome sales figures.
51. Saga (Image) 03/2012: Saga #1 - 37,641 (51,766) 04/2012: Saga #2 - 36,885 (43,137)(-2.0%) 05/2012: Saga #3 - 38,895 (+5.4%) 06/2012: Saga #4 - 41,143 (+5.8%) 07/2012: Saga #5 - 40,556 (-1.4%) 08/2012: Saga #6 - 40,584 (+0.7%) 09-10/2012: - 11/2012: Saga #7 - 46,971 (+15.7%) 12/2012: Saga #8 - 42,324 (-9.9%)
A bit of a drop off, after the beginning of the new arc last month. This is still the second-best ever first month sales.
28. A small increase ahead of the expected large increase that Charlie Adlard’s 100th issue on artistic duties will bring next month. Coupled with the impending return of the TV series, sales should take a nice jump.
======
All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.
Green Hornet isn’t ending. They’re adding “Legacy” to the title so they don’t “confuse” it with Waid’s.
LOL they should have called it Green Hornet NOW!
Also, Freelancers ends at #6, Army of Darkness at #13, and Bionic Woman at #10.

Man, the small sales of Storm Dogs really makes me both mad and sad.
This sales post is missing some career ending snark.
Once again, The Beat’s insistence on keeping its three thin column layout means information for multiple titles is cut off due to the width of the leftmost column. Is this ever going to be fixed?
There’s more to be said about the sales of the four on-going GI Joe series and why the three interconnected series are being cancelled and relaunched while Larry Hama’s “A Real American Hero” is continuing.
In December 2011, GI Joe (v2), Snake Eyes and Cobra had a combined 26,886 in sales. In December 2012, they had 26,278. That’s a drop of only 608 issues or 2.3%. But in December 2013, those three titles resulted in only 20,827 copies sold to retailers. That’s a 20.7% drop over a year. Or 22.5% over two years. Clearly the bottom was dropping out of those titles and something needed to be done.
Real American Hero though has only had a drop of 855 copies sold or 9.9% over two years. In this market that’s a pretty solid readership (myself included). In October of last year it became the highest selling of the four on-going series. The highest selling comic with GI Joe in the title was actually the Danger Girl/GI Joe crossover which has the benefit of two audiences but dropped 37.2% between its first and final issues (5 issues in 6 months).
This year will see the delayed movie come out which should also see new product and a potential sales spike. Though I don’t think anyone is too optimistic about the potential quality of the new film.
I finally dropped Fatale. It just wasn’t holding my interest despite my enjoyment of Criminal and Incognito. Was Lapham’s Stray Bullets terribly good? I’ve never been a fan of his writing but have heard a lot about that series (kinda like Robinson and his Starman series).
Mellerick, how many books do you read a month?
There’s something melancholy and sad about the Independents list. To see Bionic Woman, GI Joe, Simpsons, Lone Ranger? in a current list is a bummer.
So if I add things up in a guess , there’s only a pool of 100000 readers in the country that will (A). take a chance to walk into a still -uninviting comic book shop looking for something different. Not that superheroes are bad if you ask me, but nothing glorious like Miller/Byrne era or (B) Buy a repackaged Hunger games remake (like I mistakenly did) and be awed by all Image creativity out there that looks a lot like Epic Comics of yesteryear to me.. With the all original Image creators just maintaining their vanity books. (btw, What happened to Spawn? is he is under 300 Hell now…) Think it would be more entertaining to see them in a 90’s Ledfield Hot Tub Time Machine movie as opposed to their 3K-5k rankings.
I wonder when the first of the Big Two that goes down into a Superman/Batman skeleton crew for movie properties if all those creators who can’t make the cut at Marvel or write Lost-type dramas, will go to Independent comics with more sci-fi/gangster stories, maybe make their own heroes and self publish digitally and see if their following stays. It would be more interesting if you have articles about that. Not that Walking Dead TV show is “killing it” in the ratings. Something to ponder…..
Where’s it is all this going?. These comic shops aren’t going to last enough to build a print business around, (especially if look down on the ones that reorder based on your info like the editor seems to) especially if Branes & Noble is going the way of the dodo. it’ll be mostly digital is my guess and hopefully more interesting Independents report..
Another new 52 or reboot will look as ridiculous as those Microsoft commercials . Time for originality.
@Leonardo – Right there with you. Storm Dogs is great sci-fi — CSI meets Firefly at the Mos Eisley cantina. I just hope the delay on issue #3 doesn’t hurt it too much.
Worth noting that Judge Dredd 2 has gone back for a second print so hopefully (even though its not a Dredd for me hopefully it’ll expose more readers the wonderful world of 2000ad and the good stuff in there) this is a case of retailers underestimating demand.
Now if everyone will now please stop reading this and go out and buy Planet of the Apes – Cataclysm before it gets cancelled. Its a fantastic book and such a shame it doesn’t seem to have found an audience, just like its predecessor… oh you might was well pick up The Massive while ya at it….
I wanted to try The Massive, but its too expensive for my tastes. They should of made the first trade $10. And so there is no point buying the $1 first issue.
I’m really curious to see how the big Sonic / Mega Man crossover will go. Tempted to buy Sonic’s upcoming anniversary issues and see how the series has held up.
What are you talking about? Thief of Thieves has rock solid numbers overall. 11 issues and its only lost 2k in readers!

Paul,
I really enjoy this column every month. You do an excellent job.
@Peter – Stray Bullets was my absolute favorite book when it was coming out. I’ve gone back to it several times since and it still holds up as one of the best works from the indie scene ever. Sadly, everything Lapham’s done since has to stand in the shadow of Stray Bullets and that shadow seems to eclipse all his other work.
“Once again, The Beat’s insistence on keeping its three thin column layout means information for multiple titles is cut off due to the width of the leftmost column. Is this ever going to be fixed?”
The same thing happens every time they post a movie trailer. I mentioned it several weeks ago. There doesn’t seem to be any interest in fixing it.
Srfan – it’s a work in progress as far as the borders go, only 4 cut off this month, so hopefully we’ll get it better next month! Bloody indie publishers with their long titles, grumble, moan…
PeterCSM730 – Stray Bullets is one of my favourite books ever, I can’t recommend it highly enough. Well worth tracking down if you like a good nourish crime book. It hits the same sort of notes as the excellent movie Killer Joe. And I read most of the comics, thanks to my job
Surprising that Prophet isn’t selling more; It’s garnered so much buzz and praise. It’s pretty amazing.
Evan – thanks for that, it can be a bit difficult figuring out Dynamite sometimes, their books run so late, and they don’t tend to announce when books end. I think the two Red Sonja books and Bionic Man have been replaced by miniseries as well, possibly before relaunch.
@Suzene: Exactly, and the amount of thought that went into the building of Storm Dogs’s fictional work is staggering. Everything is presented in such a natural way, without force-feeding the info to the reader.
Perhaps the biggest problem the series faced was (besides lack of efficient marketing) that by the end of issue one is was a bit hard to care for the characters. The sci-fi world and setting were the biggest draw. But by the end of second issue, I think that things had changed, with the characters’ story feeling more compelling.
A shame, I hoped the series would be a big hit.
I am holding the 6th issue of the Guarding the Globe in my hand so I don’t think it is cancelled. Or maybe it is as of issue 6 since I haven’t read it yet. Can anyone confirm it is already done after 6 issues?
@Leandro (with apologies for getting it wrong the first time!) – I agree that the setting and the layers of mystery were the biggest draws in the first issue, but I never had any difficulties so far as investing in the cast was concerned. The crew’s good-byes at the start of the issue offered some interesting previews as to personality that made me want to see how they would react when things turned horrible (and with David Hine writing, you know things must!), and the character profiles at the back of each give considerable more insight as to what makes them tick.
But yes, I am sad that the book didn’t keep more of the first issue sales. The folks I’ve managed to get reading it have all enjoyed it.
Jason – It’s in the letter column. Issue 6 is the last issue.
Guarding the Globe is (essentially) being relaunched as Invincible Universe in April. Same general cast, same writer, same artist.
I’ve given up on DC and while I do enjoy a few Marvel titles I’d consider giving them up to support more indie owned books.
I am still enjoying the loopiness of Multiple Warheads. And the comic is ‘all comic’, since there are no ads in it. Cover to cover comic content.
Wow these Valiant number are depressing…..the books have excellent quality writing and art. Give them a try people you wont be disappointed. At the level the sales are at, unless a miracle happens I cant see these books around in 12 months time. And this is why I hesitate to pick up Indie books. Never know if youll even make it past issues #12….though I guess we can say the same about Marvel and DC these days……The only other Indie I buy it TMNT and Walking Dead.
Thanks Paul for the heads up. And thanks Brian for letting me know about the rebranding.
Despite being cancelled I’m still happy to have the 12 issues of Popeye that were published. An excellent all-ages pure-fun comic that very few bothered to read.
I look back on all my favourite comics from the past few decades and they’ve always been indie or alternative. Unless we’re talking Kirby or Ditko (and, ok, Grant Morrison) no main stream comics can compare to Goon, Hate, Eightball, Love and Rockets, Freak Brothers, Wolverton, Chew, Flaming Carrot, Charles Burns, Seth, Dave Stevens, Bone, Beanworld, Bob Fingerman, Madman, Reid Fleming, Saga, Manhattan Projects, Alan Moore, Kaz, Fatale… The list goes on.
Thanks Chris and Paul! I’ll track down Stray Bullets after I find a new job (and $$$).
I wish I didn’t have to worry about the sales numbers of my books
The Transformers books are the best they’ve been since their relaunch after Marvel. The art is consistently top notch, plus they don’t suffer the made for the trade paperback story syndrome most comics suffer from these days.
Rafaelle – so do I, but I think you’re talented enough that that day will come. Don’t forget that Rob Kirkman had more than a few sales flops before he hit on a winning concept. Talent usually shines through!
I have no idea why there is a Brian after my name there. Autocorrect is weird sometimes.
