It’s been more than a decade since Suzanne Collins released the first book in her best-selling The Hunger Games trilogy. In addition to launching a billion dollar film franchise, the book series has more than 100 million copies in print and spent more than 260 consecutive weeks on The New York Times best-seller list. Now, readers can return to Panem in an as-of-yet-untitled Hunger Games prequel novel to see how the first rebellion affected the dystopia, 64 years before Katniss Everdeen volunteered as Tribute to save her sister from the games.

“With this book, I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are, and what we perceive is required for our survival,” Collins said in a statement on Monday. “The reconstruction period 10 years after the war, commonly referred to as the Dark Days — as the country of Panem struggles back to its feet — provides fertile ground for characters to grapple with these questions and thereby define their views of humanity.”

Scholastic Trade Publishing President Ellie Berger said in a statement, “Suzanne Collins is a master at combining brilliant storytelling, superb world building, breathtaking suspense, and social commentary. We are absolutely thrilled — as both readers and publishers — to introduce the devoted fans of the series and a new audience to an entirely new perspective on this modern classic.”

Although the Panem prequel novel is currently untitled, it is slated for release on May 19, 2020. A teaser image from Scholastic features the Hunger Games title font on a black background with the announcement text, as well as a single, floating white feather. With less than a year until release, a title and cover image for this Hunger Games prequel will surely be revealed sooner than later, along with a full synopsis.

  1. I never saw the films, but read the trilogy which I enjoyed for the most part. It would be interesting to see some of the early history of the world.
