It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about the planned G.I. Joe spin-off movie starring the ninja Snake Eyes with director Robert Schwentke (RedR.I.P.D.) attached to helm. Paramount Pictures seems to have found its star to play the title character, and it’s none other than Henry Golding from Crazy Rich Asians, according to THR.

Golding is currently in talks to play the role of G.I. Joe’s ninja warrior, which is ironic, since Snake Eyes doesn’t talk, or at least he hasn’t in any of the movies or comics previously. (Presuming that this is an origin story, we’ll get to see Golding’s face and hear him speak.)

Following his breakout role in Crazy Rich Asians, Golding also starred in the Paul Feig thriller  A Simple Favor opposite Anna Kendrick, and also has roles in the upcoming holiday comedy Last Christmas and Guy Ritchie‘s next movie The Gentlemen.

Snake Eyes has been one of the more popular G.I. Joe characters since being introduced in the ’80s, particularly due to his ongoing feud with his ninja blood brother Storm Shadow. The two characters have been pivotal in all aspects of G.I. Joe from the toys to the Marvel Comics to the various cartoons. There’s been no word whether Storm Shadow might appear in this spin-off film or if there’ll be any connections to the previous two G.I. Joe movies.

In those two previous live action G.I. Joe movies, Snake Eyes was played by Ray Park, best known for playing Darth Maul in the “Star Wars” movies and Nightcrawler in Bryan Singer‘s 2000 X-Men. Storm Shadow was played by Korean superstar Byung-Hun Lee in those other movies, but it hasn’t been confirmed whether or not he might continue playing that role.

Paramount Pictures is holding October 16, 2020 for a G.I. Joe movie, so we can probably assume that it’s this Snake Eyes spin-off.
