People are rallying once again, this time to aid retailer David Pirkola who was shot and seriously injured in a robbery attempt. Pirkola has no insurance, and the comics world is giving to help:

4/29 UPDATE
An amazing day yesterday, as last night we crossed over the $2000 mark in donations. Thank you to everyone who donated and please keep getting the word out and keep the donations coming in. We’ve been hitting the email and the phones and we’re putting together some amazing things to come. Think your favorite creators and your favorite publishers….think charity auctions…think awesome signed comics and comics related stuff – and it will all go to help Dave and his recovery. Stay tuned for more details!

  1. I drive by Apparitions every day on my way home from work. I haven’t been in there since I was a young lad buying super hero books, and that was a looong time ago. It is certainly not the kind of place any self respecting criminal would look to score, what a senseless crime. I may have to stop in tonight and pick up a few items. Let’s put that economic stimulus check to good use. I really hope this charity auction thing works out too, it warms my heart to see the community rally around a fallen comrade like this.

  2. I shop at Apparitions about once a month or so and this really shook me up. Dave is a nice guy who manages to remember my name even though I’m not an every Wednesday customer (meanwhile, I’ve been shopping at a store in a different West Michigan town for about 20 years and every time I see he owner he acts like he’s never seen me before). When I self-published a comic a year and a half ago, Dave agreed to stock some copies and even made a shelf-talker for me (we ended up selling out our original stock- I think mostly due to Dave’s help in marketing). I wish him the speediest of recoveries…
