BOOM! Studios has announced an animated series based on Grim is in the works for Netflix, executive produced by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (the creators of Wednesday, Smallville, and more), as well as director Jennifer Yuh Nelson (Love, Death & Robots, Kung Fu Panda 3). The comic, created by writer Stephanie Phillips and artist Flaviano in 2022, follows the newly deceased Jessica Harrow, who is tasked with becoming a Reaper, whose job is ferry other souls to the afterlife.
The official synopsis for the first issue elaborates, “Unlike the rest of the Reapers, [Jesssica] has no memory of what killed her and put her into this predicament. In order to unravel the mystery of her own demise, she’ll have to solve an even bigger one – where is the actual GRIM REAPER?” The series wrapped up after 25 issues earlier this month, and had averaged a rating of 8.9/10 on ComicBookRoundup.com by the time it ended.
Phillips states, “Grim has meant so much to me and to everyone who’s worked on it. To see it take on new life (pun intended) as an animated series with Netflix is beyond exciting, and I can’t wait for fans, new and old, to step into Jessica Harrow’s world with us.” She and Flaviano will be credited as executive producers, alongside Millar, Gough, and Nelson, as well as BOOM! Studios’ Stephen Christy, Adam Yoelin, and Mette Norkjaer.
The series is only the latest BOOM! comic to be developed into media for Netflix, following the first-look deal the companies made in 2020. Projects borne of the deal included the animated series Mech Cadets, and the upcoming film and anime based on Keanu Reeves et al.’s BRZRKR. A TV version of Something is Killing the Children was among the BOOM! adaptations in-development for the streamer until it fell through, and the rights were subsequently acquired by Blumhouse.
No details on writers, casting, or who’ll provide animation services were provided at the time of writing, though assuming all goes according to plan, those should be announced in the near future. In the meantime, Grim Vol. 5, collecting the final five issues, will be released on April 7, 2026, while a deluxe edition of the first 15 issues is available now. Phillips is also continuing to stay busy between her latest creator-owned series, Endeavour, at DSTLRY, and her Marvel projects, including the relaunch of Daredevil, kicking off March 18.
