“52” is the lucky number at DC Comics, and with the (once) New 52 reaching their 52nd issues, it’s time to celebrate with a series of variant covers, because as far as we know, a NEWER 52 might be on the way.
Celebrating 52 issues of incredible storytelling, DC Entertainment’s May 2016 variant cover theme will pay homage to the #1 issues of eleven comics that debuted in 2011 when DC Entertainment rebooted their superhero publishing line and revitalized the comics industry as a whole. It was a momentous occasion then, and is an anniversary to celebrate now!
Inspired by Cliff Chiang’s Wonder Woman #1, Rags Morales and Brad Anderson’s Action Comics #1, Adam Hughes’ Batgirl #1, and more, these brand-new “The New 52” variants will grace the covers of those same landmark titles that are hitting issue #52 in May. Illustrated by an all-star lineup of incredible talent, May’s lineup of variant covers are as remarkable as the industry-changing covers they’re based on.
Given comics’ history of repurposing, swiping and tributing, and the fast turnover of culture due to social media, having a solemn tribute to five years ago seems HIGHLY appropriate. Also you can see where we’ve gone in five years with a few folks having changed their clothes in the interim.

Does this mean it’s over and I can start buying DC Comics again?
Let me see if I’ve got this straight: they’re remaking covers from 51 issues ago? Is the ouroboros of nostalgia that tight behind us already? How long before they just start remaking the same comic every month?
My better half says: “Stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen!”
Boring! Who cares. Another lame idea from the DC management that needs to be replaced ASAP! Is it any wonder that DC is in trouble. I will not be ordering any of these covers for my store. Sheesh!
