Everyone is welcome at Flame Con Five, set to launch this weekend in the heart of Manhattan. As the world’s largest queer comic con and entertainment expo, the two-day event features top creators and other guests representing LGBTQ fandom. As their website states, “geeks of all types are invited to attend and celebrate the diversity and creativity of queer geekdom and LGBTQ contributions to pop culture.”
In addition to guests, art, and cosplay, the weekend will also feature exclusive performances, screenings, and other special events. Last year’s show had more than 7,000 attendees. The welcoming vibe allows anyone entry no matter their sex, race, religion, age, or orientation.
The con is a product of Geeks OUT, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to rally, empower, and promote the queer geek community. Established in 2010, the organization’s goal is to bring a positive queer presence to local comic conventions. In addition to Flame Con, Geeks OUT now hosts events in five major cities and attends conventions across the nation.
The event is family friendly, with most materials kept at a PG-13 rating (some vendors may have mature content, but it will not be public facing). Sunday is also youth day where anyone under 21 gets in free. For 21 and older, the event will continue its tradition of hosting Fire Ball: The Official Flame Con After Party on August 17 from 9 PM to 1 AM, which will showcase geeky drag, burlesque, gymnastics, and musical performances.
Schedule highlights for the weekend include a panel on queer witches, being a trans voice actor with Jesse Nowack, a Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men live show, creator signings, a “panfandom variety show,” a flag creation workshop, cosplay meet-ups, and more. Plus, Flame Con has an extensive guest list including: Taneka Stotts, Melanie Gillman, Jay Edidin, Miles Stokes, Mariko Tamaki, Rosemary Valero-O’Connell, Christina “Steenz” Stewart, Tamra Bonvillain, Magdalene Visaggio, Vita Ayala, Jen Bartel, and more.
Convention hours are Saturday, August 17 from 12 PM to 8 PM and Sunday, August 18 from 12 PM to 6 PM at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel. To purchase tickets for the show as well as for Fire Ball, head to the Flame Con website. Tickets will be available at the door pending availability.
