“In this girl-meets-bug sci-fi-rock-musical-comedy, Carly, an exterminator, is hell-bent on avenging her mother’s bedbug related death. In an effort to permanently rid the city of its infestation, she accidentally mutates the pests into blood-sucking, heavy metal rock gods. Bedbugs!!! is an original musical that the NY Times called, “…a little bit “Little Shop of Horrors” and a little bit “Rocky Horror Show,” but even more over the top.” This “*improbably entertaining” and “**wonderfully outrageous and inventive” musical is a blitz of 80’s nostalgia and a creepy-crawly love affair of massive proportions.

The Stand

$20

Janeane Garofalo:

Actress and Comedian Janeane Garofalo has been an American institution since she burst on the scene in 1992.

In addition to acting in film and television, Janeane is an outspoken activist, spoken word performer and stand-up comedy entertainer known and respected around the country, and the world. As well, she was instrumental in the successful launching of the first liberal radio network, Air America Radio, where she hosted her own talk show, “”The Majority Report.”” A lightning rod for controversy, Janeane’s well informed opinions and unflinching honesty have inspired laughs, as well as striking a chord with the left, right and everyone in between. She is a noted peace activist.

Janeane has had many memorable and critically acclaimed roles in films such as “”The Truth About Cats and Dogs,”” “”Steal This Movie,”” “”Copland,”” “”Reality Bites,”” and “”Duane Hopwood,”” as well as for her specific brand of sharp wit and comedy shown in her roles in “”Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion,”” “”Bye Bye Love,”” “”Mystery Men,”” “”Clay Pigeons,”” “”The Minus Man”” and “”The Cable Guy,”” directed by her friend Ben Stiller. Ben and Janeane also co-authored the best seller “”Feel This Book,”” (Ballantine May 1999). Janeane was also a cast member of the Emmy Award-winning Ben Stiller Show.

Janeane played the role of Paula, the acerbic talent booker, on “”The Larry Sanders Show,”” for which she received an Emmy nomination in 1997 and two Cable Ace nominations. During the fall of ’94 she joined the cast of “”Saturday Night Live.”” Some of Janeane’s other television work includes two specials for HBO, the series finale of “”Mad About You”” and the critically lauded, final season of NBC’s “”The West Wing,”” where she played Democratic campaign strategist Louise Thornton.

In 2007, Janeane’s voice was featured in the Disney/Pixar animated comedy Ratatouille, and can be seen in Stella writer/director David Wain’s ensemble comedy, “”The Ten.”” Janeane can also be seen in her latest projects, the Lifetime movie “”Girl’s Best Friend”” and as a recurring character on the 2009 season of “”24.””

Dan Soder: Originally from Aurora, CO, Dan Soder started doing stand up at 21 while attending the University of Arizona. After two years of playing clubs and casinos all over the southwest, Dan decided he’d had enough of extreme heat and venomous animals so he moved to New York to get serious about stand-up. When he’s not napping or being lazy you can see Dan perform at clubs all over the city. You can also see Dan on this upcoming season of “”Live at Gotham.”” He hopes to not shame his family or friends — he also hopes he gets more time to nap now that he’s been on TV.

Taxidermy: From Collecting to Making

Museum of Morbid Anatomy

$5

“The impulse to create can come from many sources: from an art study, a desire to see something unique, or a response to maintaining a collection that needs constant repair. Taxidermy is one such collection.

Taxidermy study has not been as easily available since the mid Victorian Era, when collections flourished and craftsmen learned to preserve animals to fill a huge demand. Today, in the Digital Age, the desire to acquire what Walter Benjamin called “the aura of one” and the return to handwork have encouraged people, who once were collectors, to start making their own collections.

In connection with Taxidermy Art, this talk will address the rise of Rogue Taxidermy through the lens of Collecting.

Robert Marbury is a multi-disciplinary artist working in fabric, photography, and fur. He is a co-founder of the Minnesota Association of Rogue Taxidermists, lectures internationally about rogue taxidermy and judges the annual Carnivorous Night’s Taxidermy Contest, which is the largest alternative taxidermy contest in the world.

Robert lives and works in Baltimore, MD. “”Taxidermy Art: A Rogue’s Guide to the Work, the Culture, and How to Do It Yourself”” is Robert’s first book.”

Science Exclamation Point Presents: “Lies”

Museum of Morbid Anatomy

$8

“Have you ever gone to a science lecture and thought, “”That was awesome, but I wish it was followed by a group of improv comedians doing a set based on the lecture?”” Then Science Exclamation Point has you covered! Three former scientists, Ben Lillie, Danielle Sedbrook, and Caitlin Shure team up with long-running improv team Thank You Robot to bring you an amazing mix of science & comedy.

For New York Super Week join us at The Museum of Morbid Anatomy for two lectures on lies, the lies we tell ourselves about our brains and the lies our brains tell us about our lives (courtesy of doctored photos). We’ll be joined by guest team The Curfew! http://newyork.ucbtheatre.com/shows/view/2645

This Is Your Brain On Lies

Peter Mende-Siedlecki and Caitlin Shure

With all the science and “”science”” out there about how your brain works, it can be tough to sort out fact from fiction. We’ve compiled a list of our all-time favorite brain myths and invite you to join us as we have a laugh at their expense.

Fake Images, Fake Memories

Rose Eveleth

Fake images are everywhere. You know that. Just a few notable images that are totally fake include an iconic picture of Abraham Lincoln, the picture of Romney’s kids spelling out money, any picture of a shark during a storm ever, and the famous picture of John Kerry and Jane Fonda, the list goes on. It wouldn’t be a big deal except that fake images can totally alter our memories. If you show people a doctored image of themselves riding in a balloon as a kid – a lot of them will remember it happening.

A Very Special Episode

Ripley’s Believe it or Not

$10

“A Very Special Episode is the bi-coastal storytelling show (LA and NYC) hosted by Robin Gelfenbien and Danny Artese that brings 80s and 90s TV to new, bombastic places. This month we will be showing a clip from the hit show “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air,” which inspired the theme: Too Much Is Never Enough (Stories of Being Told You’re Too-Something or Not-Something-Enough)

If you’ve ever been told you were too old/young/tall/short/fat/skinny/pretty/

ugly/smart/dumb/sexy/unsexy for your shirt or anything else, or that you weren’t old/young/tall/you-get-the-picture enough and you proved ‘em wrong, or maybe figured out they were right, we want to hear your story! We’ll choose one person to share an 8-minute story during our open mic portion. Plus, you’ll hear stories from Michele Carlo (NPR), Rory Scholl (Moth Slam Winner), Jason Evans (Keanu Reeves Saves the Universe) and Robin Gelfenbien (Vh1)! Danny Artese (Host)

Danny Artese is mostly a Dorothy but a little bit Rose. He has studied Storytelling at Upright Citizens Brigade and The Magnet Theater and has performed at The Moth and The Armando Diaz Experience. He is thrilled to co-host A Very Special Episode with the very special Robin Gelfenbien.

Michele Carlo

Michele Carlo is a real redhead, a native New Yorker and the author of the memoir Fish Out Of Agua: My life on neither side of the (subway) tracks. As a storyteller, she’s appeared across the U.S., including the MOTH’s GrandSlams and Mainstage in NYC, and on NPR with Latino USA. Like her on FB, follow her on twitter…because she’s “”jiggy”” like that.

Jason Evans

Jason Evans is an active player with the ever-evolving improvisational group, Amnesia Wars, since the early 00’s. He has performed in a number of small dark rooms around the city where the mics are open doing spontaneous stand-up. He is also a two-time published sound designer for the hilarious “Keanu Reeves Saves the Universe” – a broad sweeping sci-fi spoof of all things Keanu – and “Survivor: Vietnam” – a political parody of war and reality TV. He is a lover of bacon, plays guitar, and is a hater of long walks on the beach. He may eventually release a Country/Hip-Hop album called “No Sand in My Crack” – the misadventures of getting high on the beach.

Robin Gelfenbien (Host and Storyteller)

Robin Gelfenbien has written jokes for Rosie O’Donnell who emceed The Matrix Awards where featured presenters included Martha Stewart, Rupert Murdoch and Hillary Clinton. Her original comedy songs have played on Sirius Satellite Radio, and she starred in a commercial directed by Spike Lee.

Her critically-acclaimed solo show, “My Salvation Has a First Name (A Wienermobile Journey),” premiered at the New York International Fringe Festival. Robin has performed at The Moth, RISK! and Mortified, and she is the creator of the storytelling series, “Yum’s the Word,” that features her homemade ice cream cakes. She has also been featured in Marie Claire, and she writes for Huffington Post Comedy. www.robingelfenbien.com @robingelfenbien

Rory Scholl

Rory Scholl has been a touring comic for over ten years, performs with his musical improv troupe Royals every Friday night at the Peoples Improv Theater in NYC, is producer of a touring improv show combining art and comedy called ARTPROV and currently travels around the world hosting events for Cornell University celebrating their 150th anniversary. He has created interactive productions and comedy shows for for Disney, American Airlines and Michaels Arts and Crafts to name a few, and teaches improv in high schools and corporations across New York. Currently his original songs can be heard on the web series CatBug. He eats almonds to lower his cholesterol.

Drawn to Diversity

Simon Baruch Middle School (Manhattan)

$0 (Private event for the school’s students)

“As the Javits Center welcomes thousands of fiction fans to New York Comic Con 2014, five real superheroes will be deployed from the conference to connect with local NYC school students. The Art Force Five team, claiming that creativity is more valuable than super strength or spider senses, will provide non-violence workshops for Manhattan’s Simon Baruch Middle School on Thursday, October 9, 2014. The program is being included as part of ReedPOP’s inaugural New York Super Week, as an initiative to expand the program’s positive impact throughout the city.

The Art Force Five is the outreach branch of Alfred University’s Drawn to Diversity program which fuses social justice education with creativity development. The five colorful heroes each wear an apron (referred to as a “cape in reverse”) and each represent an artistic medium; Graphite the Illustrator, Brushstroke the Painter, Zoom the Photographer, 3-D the Sculptor and Runway the Fashion Designer. Their workshops feature highly interactive activities, magic tricks, creativity challenges, and relatable examples of conflict resolution. Participants realize that the power of creativity reaches far beyond the fine arts and impacts their relationships, perspectives, and problem-solving skills.

“Our college students truly are heroes to the kids in the audience,” shares program director Dan Napolitano. “Many of the college students hail from NYC and provide relatable role models, overcoming similar challenges.” In conjunction with the two school visits, the team will be offering craft stations daily at New York Comic Con and presenting their workshop at 10:45 AM Saturday in the Family HQ section of the event. The team has presented over one hundred interactive workshops to audiences ranging from kindergarten classrooms to professional educators. Additionally, the team specializes in leading “community-based art projects” where most needed. As their visit grows closer, the team may develop a site-specific topic and engage a community directly where they live.

“Community-based art is not about the Art Force Five demonstrating their power,” adds Napolitano. “It is an art therapy approach to helping a community find their own voice and providing every member an opportunity to express their viewpoint on a chosen topic.” Examples of past projects can be found at www.drawntodiversity.com . Questions about the program can be directed to Dan Napolitano, Director of Student Activities at Alfred University at [email protected] or by calling 607-871-2671.

OkCupid Co-Founder Christian Rudder Talks with New York Magazine’s Jesse Singal about his New Book Dataclysm

Littlefield

Christian Rudder, co-founder and President of OkCupid and author of Dataclysm: Who We Are When We Think No One’s Looking, will discuss with Jesse Singal of New York Magazine’s Science of Us all you ever wanted to know about data and the way we live our lives online. Because we live so much of our lives online, digital data can show how we fight, how we love, how we age, how we change, and what we really want. There is a real revolution taking place in the study of human behavior and Rudder is on the front lines. In his outrageous, illuminating, provocative, and visually fascinating book, he pulls back the curtain to show how data can help us understand what makes us tick. For anyone who ever wanted to know who we really are and what we really want when we think no one’s looking, DATACLYSM holds the key. An Evening with Pat Rothfuss and Paul & Storm

Galapagos Art Space

$30

“An evening custom-built for nerds and geeks of all stripes. Bestselling fantasy author Pat Rothfuss will read from his works, answer questions and tell stories; comedy/music duo Paul and Storm will sing about nuns, chicken nuggets, video games, and an incredibly long song about pirates.

PAT ROTHFUSS

Patrick Rothfuss is the New York Times Bestselling author of The Name of the Wind and Wise Man’s Fear. When not working on Book Three, Pat plays with his son and runs Worldbuilders, a charity that raises money for Heifer International.

PAUL AND STORM

Paul and Storm (Paul Sabourin and Greg “Storm” DiCostanzo) are known internationally and across the Internet for their original comedy music (often with a “nerd-ish” bent). In addition to their own live performances, they are co-founders of the geek-oriented variety show w00tstock, along with Wil Wheaton and Adam Savage, and co-produce JoCo Cruise Crazy. The duo’s original webseries musical, “LearningTown“, debuted on YouTube’s Geek & Sundrychannel in January 2013. Also in 2013, their song “Another Irish Drinking Song” was featured in the hit movie Despicable Me 2, and in July had their guitar smashed on stage by George R. R. Martin (and deserved it).

X Japan Concert

Madison Square Garden

$80.95

“Internationally renowned rock icons X Japan announced today that tickets for their highly anticipated October 11th concert at Madison Square Garden will go on sale this Friday at 10:00AM EDT at http://www.ticketmaster.com/XJapan-tickets/artist/723909. The Madison Square Garden concert event is sponsored by New York Comic Con.

X Japan, led by co-founder, drummer, pianist and songwriter Yoshiki, will return to New York City for their first concert since 2010, performing both fan favorites and previously unreleased music from the band’s decades of recordings. This Madison Square Garden concert marks a significant milestone for the band who made their U.S. debut with a Rockefeller Center press conference over 20 years ago, which presented the fierce J-Rock stars to an American audience. The band is finally fulfilling the promise they made to the fans to return. The group has since toured 16 countries, sold over 30 million albums and singles combined, and sold out Japan’s 55,000 seat Tokyo Dome a record-setting 18 times. The concert trailer for X Japan Madison Square Garden can be viewed here: http://youtu.be/qI-zQehlQaI

X Japan has had a notoriously tumultuous career, even among the world of rock, which includes the loss of two of its five founding members to tragic death. Amid death and breakups, the band has steadfastly maintained X Japan’s vision and this year brought themselves together to perform where their U.S. story started, in New York City.

In line with October’s Madison Square Garden concert, Yoshiki and X Japan will appear at New York Comic Con, where Yoshiki will participate in a panel with Marvel Comics founder Stan Lee and discuss the pair’s collaborations, including the comic based on Yoshiki, Blood Red Dragon. New York Super Week is an immersive and inclusive experience that will bring the energy, passion and color of the entire pop culture universe to every corner of all five boroughs of New York City. Featuring concerts, comedy shows, gaming events, lectures, podcasts, storytelling, food tastings, and more – New York Super Week will take place October 3-12, leading into the East Coast’s biggest and most exciting convention – New York Comic Con.

About X Japan

X Japan returns to the United States this October bringing their legendarily edgy brand of rock to New York City for one night at the iconic Madison Square Garden. The concert event marks the band’s first show together in 3 years and will feature fan favorites as well as previously unreleased and never before performed music. X Japan is revered in their native Japan and around the world as a genre-defining and boundary pushing group, and have mesmerized audiences across the globe with their incendiary live performances. With worldwide sales of over 30-million, they’ve headlined a staggering 18 sold out shows at the 55,000-capacity Tokyo Dome known for historic concerts by Michael Jackson and Bon Jovi. Since forming in 1982, they’ve continued to challenge not only themselves but rock n’ roll as a genre.

X Japan first landed on American soil in 1992. Signed to Atlantic Records at the time they held a massive press conference at Rockefeller Center debuting their eye-catching personal style. Embracing a combination of flamboyant futurist imagery and Japanese history, X Japan’s “Visual-Kei” style would go on to immensely influence the anime and cosplay that’s so commonplace today. Prior to the group’s 1998 breakup they released five albums —Vanishing Vision [1998], Blue Blood [1989], Jealousy [1991], Art of Life [1993], and Dahlia [1996]—solidifying a sound that’s equally scorching and soaring.

The death of original guitarist Hide profoundly shook the band, but in 2007 Toshi and Yoshiki, friends since childhood, reunited. They paid tribute to Hide on tour by utilizing a hologram of the deceased guitarist—long before 2Pac’s appearance at Coachella – during that first Japanese reunion run. After hitting sixteen countries, the United States tour commenced with a triumphant debut performance at Lollapalooza 2010 and was followed by sold out shows from Los Angeles to New York.

In 2011 X Japan faced another deep loss with the death of original bassist Taiji. The band continued with him in spirit, and X Japan were named Best International Rock Band at the Golden Gods Awards in 2012.

In 2014, Yoshiki, Toshi, Pata, Heath, and Sugizo embodied that mentality in working on the upcoming release on Warner Music, scheduled to be released early next year.
