Christopher Priest’s Vampirella run has been one of Dynamite’s most successful series to date. The writer’s approach to the character and his take on the universe has brought about a refreshing renaissance for Vampi. Now, the world Priest has built is expanding even more with sacredsix, a new ongoing team book set to release in May. Read more from the publisher here:
Enter: a tale of two towns in rural Georgia. One is Ashthorne, an impoverished farming town with a deadly secret. Otherwise known as “Vampire Valley,” most of its citizens are vampires and sundry other ghouls, though not by choice or blood. These once-human victims are now shunned by society in the open but live peacefully and just want to be left alone to live their lives in peace. Meanwhile, the bright and shiny Sacred is a recently “manufactured” community lorded over by staunch conservatives for the express purpose of oppressing and ultimately destroying Ashthorne’s residents. This tension will escalate as the series progresses, and instigate the arrival of a group of heroines…
Priest delivers a new take on the Draculina (Victory) character as well as Pantha, Nyx, and Chastity of Chaos! fame. They are led by Lilith of Drakulon, the “Cersei Lannister of space vampires.” The sixth member of the team is a surprise, and our favorite Daughter of Drakulon will of course be involved as they go undercover in the exclusive Sacred as students to fight against the injustice as The Six.
Gabriel Ibarra (Graveland) heads up the art, with colorist Mohan (Red Sonja) and letterer Willie Schubert (Deathstroke, Batman). Jae Lee (Batman/Superman, Inhumans) will be doing interior pages across the first five issues, featuring a special sequence mixed into the main plot recounting Pantha’s revamped origin.
“I can see the headlines now: ‘Priest Returns to Black Panther!’ We are birthing a (literally) different animal and expansion of our version of the Vampirella shared universe,” said Priest in a statement.
Ibrarra added, “This mix of characters in diverse situations can be a challenge, but I’m putting all my effort into every single page. To be working with a legend like Priest is hard to even describe. He has such a clear vision through his scripts and I’m grateful to be bringing them to the page. I’m excited for fans to see what we’re doing!”
“Not many creators reach legendary status. Christopher Priest is a legend and I’m honored to be working with him and Dynamite,” said Lee.
“Jae and I have made several attempts to develop something together,” Priest continued. “I am totally psyched to have finally found the right project for us.”
As for covers, Lee will contribute as will Lucio Parrillo, Meghan Hetrick, Rod Reis, and Jose Ladronn. There is also an incentive cover by Joseph Michael Linsner and an Icon Incentive remasters definitive Pantha artist Mark Texeira’s cover from Vampirella (2001) #8.
