DSTLRY, a new full service comics publishing house, announced its arrival a few months ago, with just a lone anthology. Today they announced a lot more: eight new series from some of comics biggest names, all spinning out of that Anthology, The Devil’s Cut. The titles will launch from later in 2023 to 2024.
Given the focus on collectibles the company has launched with, this should make The Devil’s Cut a must have “First Appearance of” if you’re into that kind of thing.
“With The Devil’s Cut, a majority of the self-contained stories lay the foundation for series to come,” said DSTLRY CCO Chip Mosher in a statement. “To be crystal clear, these eight stories found in The Devil’s Cut are not previews, but the first appearances of new worlds from our Founding Creators and Friends.”
And here’s the line-up – although no details were given the titles are intriguing at least, as is the preview art.
-
“Spectregraph” by James Tynion IV, Christian Ward, and Aditya Bidikar
-
“Shepherd” by Marc Bernardin, Ariela Kristantina, Lee Loughridge, and Bernardo Brice
-
“8 Rules to Make It Out in One Piece” by Elsa Charretier, PK Colinet, Nick Filardi, and Clayton Cowles
-
“A Blessed Day” by Mirka Andolfo, Fabio Amelia, Arancia Studio, and Steve Orlando
-
“The Stowaway” by Jock
-
“Deleted Scene, #2” by Brian Azzarello, Eduardo Risso, and Jared K. Fletcher
-
“White Boat” by Scott Snyder, Francesco Francavilla, Andworld Design, and Tyler Jennes
-
“What Blighted Flame Burns in Thee?” by Becky Cloonan, Tula Lotay, and Richard Starkings
Many of these creators are also co-owners in the company, as announced back in April – they are considered “Founding Creators” and will also share in a 3% cut of the company that is pooled for all DSTLRY series creators.
As for The Devil’s Cut, it arrives in stores on August 30th, however it may just be previewed at SDCC. Variant covers include a main cover by Jock, an open-to-order variant cover by Francesco Francavilla, and incentive variant covers by Becky Cloonan (1:10), Tula Lotay (1:25), Joëlle Jones (1:50), and Mirka Andolfo (1:75).
Because DSTLRY is creating digital scarcity for their comics, the digital version of The Devil’s Cut will be available from DSTLRY only until September 6. After that you’ll have to buy it on a digital marketplace from someone who bought it already. A share of the selling price will go back to creators.
Physical copies can be ordered via Diamond and Lunar, and will be subject to the regular laws of supply and demand.
Obviously DSTLRY is alunching with a lot of new and unconventional ideas about selling comics, but one thing their doing is very traditional: a killer line-up of talent on their regular series. It’s all about the stories!
Will you be checking out DSTLRY’s ongoing series? Will you be reselling your digial copies? Sounds off in the comments!
Glad to finally see some comics coming out of this supposed comics company. It’s feeling a lot like the Substack boom from last year, which has more or less fizzled out now. Not a fan of this strange digital strategy, but the projects they have coming out look really cool.
