Following early releases on Rise of Skywalker and Frozen 2, Disney is hoping that an expedited Onward VOD will get you through the quarantine, distract the kids for a bit (and recover some of those losses from theaters shutting down).

Those of you who are partial to owning can buy Onward digitally for $19.99 beginning March 20 (that’s today) at 5:00pm PST – or, if you’re in the U.S., you’ve already got your Disney+ sub secured, you can wait until April 3 and watch it there.

Although it’s certainly not a favorite of Pixar’s films, Onward still grossed $62M domestically and $103M globally ahead of covid-19’s recent spike.

The move follows an industry trend of late which is also seeing the early release of Blumhouse’s critically acclaimed The Invisible Man, the not so acclaimed The Hunt and Warner Bros.’ The Way Back, among others. Time will tell how this long considered release format will affect film schedules on the other side of the coronavirsu pandemic – but this homebody isn’t complaining.

Per DeadlineOnward directors Dan Scanlon and Kori Rae had this to say about the early digital release.

“While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes,”
