Announced way back in 2018, actor Diego Luna is set to reprise his role as rebel spy Cassian Andor in a Disney+ original prequel series that takes place five years before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Today at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, Lucasfilm not only announced release details for the upcoming series but also unveiled the first Andor trailer.

Described as an “espionage spy thriller” here’s the official description from Disney and Lucasfilm:

The Andor series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.

Joining Luna in yet to be revealed roles are Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough and Kyle Soller. Additionally, Genevieve O’Reilly will also return as Rebel Alliance co-founder and leader Mon Mothma, a role she’s played in live-action for over 15 years.

Created by Tony Gilroy, the first season of Andor will consist of 12 episodes with a second season also consisting of 12 episodes is in development.

In addition to the Andor trailer, Lucasfilm also unveiled the follwing poster

While first two seasons of the first Disney+ Star Wars original series The Mandalorian were an unquestionable success thanks in no small part to breakout character Baby Yoda Grogu, the most recent series The Book of Boba Fett wasn’t as warmly received, particularly that infamous vespas in the third episode.

And while I can’t say I was particularly blown away by the Rogue One film when I first saw it in theaters, the Cassian Andor character does seem to have resonated with fans.

Andor is set to premiere on Disney+ on Wednesday August 31 2022
