Comics are saved! The answer, as always was monkeys. Ok, not monkeys, but rather apes, but the effect is the same: joy, screeching, fun. DC has just announced the coming of the Jungle League in the Ape-ril Special #1, in which all their great ape character will team up to save the world and comics.
It will even have a banana scented cover.
Gorilla Grodd and Monsieur Mallah started the fray, as Detective Chimp and the rest scamper behind. Writers John Layman, Joshua Hale Fialkov and Gene Yang are joined by artists Karl Mostert, Phil Hester and Bernard Chang to continue this monkey business. The main cover is by Dan Mora, with a Bernard Chang variant and Hayden Sherman with the Banana scent edition.
The bad news? This is only a 48-page one shot. We need MORE Jungle League.
Bringing in simians to save the day is a time tested comics sales technique. Back in the ’50s, then DC publisher Irwin Donenfeld was convinced that putting an ape on the cover would sell more copies, and since then DC has had a long hallowed tradition of apes leading the way to sales success. One time DC publisher Carmine Infantino was especially good at drawing apes and contributed greatly to the genre.
In these turbulent times, the apes are back to save the day yet again.
Clearly DC’s copy writers were overjoyed to write this pr, so we will share the fun with you all:

Gorilla Grodd’s recent incarcer-ape-tion in the pages of DC’s The Flash comic book series has left a void that Monsieur Mallah is more than happy to fill. Ape-sembling a group of the DCU’s most sinister simians, Mallah forms the Legion of D(oo-oo-ah-ah)m, with an eye toward world domin-ape-tion. But the world won’t be conquered that easily! Enter the all-ape JUNGLE L(ee-ee)gue. Can this team of hero-eek anthropoids be the salv-ape-tion we need, or will Mallah’s team of maniacal monkeys bring forth the ape-pocalypse?
