Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.
While DC’s top seller, Batman, slid to #5 on the Diamond chart–behind the debut issues of Orphan Black (Loot Crate-enhanced), Darth Vader, and Spider-Gwen; and the second issue of Star Wars–things were in fact a bit rosier for DC in February. Especially compared to January, as the Harley Quinn freely-orderable variant was a good deal more popular with those doing the ordering than last month’s Flash variant. In most cases adding 2K – 4K more copies for those titles with the HQ variant. (A couple, Batman & Flash, went up about 8K; while Batgirl mysteriously dropped instead.)
For the most part, DC is in a holding pattern right now, as many titles are coming to a close next month and the move-induced mega-event Convergence on the slate for April & May followed by a sizable relaunch in June. So you’ll have to forgive the brevity of many of the comments below, as their just isn’t that much to say this month that hasn’t already been said before. Don’t worry, I promise that the next few month’s DC sales charts will have plenty more excitement!
Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted last month over at Comichron!
Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.
(Note that the percentage comparisons are now done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

Batman slips down to #5 this month—under Star Wars, Spider-Gwen, Darth Vader, and the Loot Crate-enhanced Orphan Black—despite the fact that its sales increased by nearly 8K. This should serve to underscore the warning to not take things like chart position as indicative of actual sales.
While a good portion of the 8K growth can be attributed to the Harley Quinn freely-orderable variant, that may not be the whole story here, as Batman’s growth over January’s numbers is considerably higher than that seen of the other books with Harley variants.

These numbers are a real head-scratcher. Last month when most titles were dropping, Batgirl stayed steady. But this month, when most titles with a Harley Quinn variant were rising, Batgirl drops more than 4K. Either retailers are still figuring out the title’s level, or a few boxes fell off the back of a truck somewhere…

—-The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera) The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.
ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.
Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.
If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.
Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.
Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well. To learn (a little) more about Vertigo’s collection sales, go right here.
Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.
Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.
** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300/400 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300/400 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

This was really hard to read due to the current month and the last year or two’s same month being in a much larger font than the Book itself.
I gave up after the 3rd or 4th book.
Agreed. Very confusing…
So sad to see those Vertigo boks tanking so badly in single format.
I love these columns, but the formating on this one made it almost unreadable for me.
Folks: Heidi and I are aware that the formatting is bad. We don’t know what caused the problem, but she is working on a fix.
In the meantime, you can read this column over at my blog: http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/2015/04/dc-comics-month-to-month-sales-february.html
The chart is missing Supergirl. (84th place for February with 26,304 copies sold).
Sigh.

the formatting looks fine to me???
Anyway, it’s weird that the sales of every book go up or down depending on which variant they pick for the monthly theme. That’s a sad affair.
Forgot to add, I think the fact that Multiversity was also back to $5 probably helped, too. The guidebook was $8, so some people inevitably dropped off.
Yeah, Chris is correct, lower price + Jim Lee bumped it up a bit…but I won’t lie, I somewhat expected the “Lee bump” to be a little bigger. The sales on Ultra Comics (which I predict to be in the Thunderworld range) and Issue #2 should be interesting.
Also, I’m really disappointed with Gotham Academy’s low sales. For my money, it’s DC’s best and most unique book outside of The Multiversity. It reads like a Miyazaki movie set in Gotham, more people should be checking that out.
I get the sense Gotham Academy sells well digitally. I, too, enjoy it.
Yeah, Gotham Academy is really good. We know that there’s an audience out there for this kind of stuff; it just needs to find that audience (and for the audience to find it). It may not be in comic stores, but perhaps in digital or collections?
“02/2015: Gotham Academy #5 — 20,844 (- 7.7%)
Another title that might have been better served launching in June with the Divergence slate.”
Gotham Academy was hurt by the fact that it was released in a cluster of books with the redesigned Batgirl being plugged as the important one and everything else just sort of being there. I don’t think that releasing it amidst an even larger field of books where the redesigned Batman, Action Comics, and Wonder Woman are treated as what’s important and everything else is just being thrown out without any fanfare would have helped. For a book like Gotham Academy to succeed you’d need specific, individualized promotion for it. Not getting that kind of push spells quick failure, and I guarantee that most Divergence titles are going to suffer the same exact fate.
I’ve stopped buying new monthlies for about the last 6 months now. And I have found I haven’t really missed them at all. Too expensive and decompressed I just got fed up.
I do want to eventually pick up the last few Swamp Thing issues I missed. But that’s about it. Maybe digitally once they go cheap.
And yeah, no need to have the first and last issue oversized and in bold from each listing
I will be curious on the sale numbers for Fables #150/ Vol. 22 when compared to the rest of the series monthly issues.
That Harley Quinn Batman variant is so creepy; what is Joker supposed to be, her father come to punish her? Jill Thompson is twisted!
