Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.

Still no sign of the Diamond end-of-year numbers for 2016; according to comics sales figures guru John Jackson Miller they are still forthcoming, though indefinitely delayed. One they are (finally) made available I’ll adjust the figures in the next month-to-month column.

DC had exactly as many comics for sale in January as they did in December (83) but sold about 70K fewer total comics (2.85 million), which is actually a pretty small drop considering that some Rebirth titles are still shaking out. And that’s till a whopping 1.2 million more comics than they moved in January 2016.

Why are DC doing so much better? Rebirth, yes; but what Rebirth has really given DC is an actual midlist. In January 2016 only five comics sold over 40K, and only two comics over 50K; in January 2017 there are twenty-eight comics selling over 40K, and twenty comics over 50K!

Now if only we could convince DC to stop publishing those low-selling mini-series starring c-list characters…

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are now done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

Batman is back on top for January, though it is now closely approaching where the New 52 series ended. Will Batman drop below 100K for the first time since the New 52 started? Tune in next month to find out…

4 - JUSTICE LEAGUE/POWER RANGERS ($3.99)
01/2017: JL/Power Rangers #1 of 6 -- 86,589

Bolstered by a s#!t-ton of variant covers (actually just six, plus a blank variant), the crossover that no-one asked for does surprisingly well. Expect to see that number drop at least in half for issue number two, but even 40K would be respectable for such a thing. Good on DC & Boom!

6 - ALL STAR BATMAN ($4.99)

08/2016: All Star Batman #1 -- 318,283 (+238.5%)

The #1 dollar book for January, due to its $5 price tag. So for retailers complaining that the regular Batman book has a cover price of just $3 and they cannot make as much money form each issue of Batman as they could for the $4 New 52 Batman comic, here you go. (And it’s by the same writer as that New 52 Batman too!)

7, 12, 13, 14 - JUSTICE LEAGUE VS SUICIDE SQUAD ($3.99)
12/2016: JL Vs SS #1 of 6 -- 179,643 [184,519]
12/2016: JL Vs SS #2 of 6 -- 82,475 (- 54.1%) [87,110]
01/2017: JL Vs SS #3 of 6 -- 74,299 (- 14.7%)
01/2017: JL Vs SS #4 of 6 -- 71,450 (- 3.8%)
01/2017: JL Vs SS #5 of 6 -- 71,213 (- 0.3%)
01/2017: JL Vs SS #6 of 6 -- 70,489 (- 1.0%)

There’s a lot of good news in these numbers, including the fact that it stabilized quickly and right at the level of the regular Justice League title, and that the first two issues saw reorders high enough to appear on the January chart. (But there were some downsides too, which will become apparent a bit further down on the chart…)

And here we see the post-Rebirth twice-monthly attrition model come into focus, with many of the books dropping a total of 5-7% over the course of the two issues. The distribution of those drops may be different across the two issues (though in Flash’s case they are pretty even). That does mean (as one retailer has put it) that the burn is accelerated on a monthly basis, which could lead to trouble down the line if this pattern persists.

My best guess for the slight bump up for issue #14 is that it was the start of the three-part “Multiplicity,” a kinda-sorta mini-sequel to Morrison’s Multiversity.

It may also speak well for Superman’s post-Rebirth tendency to focus on smaller story arcs or two or three issues, something that the other DC titles may want to consider…

Normally the lower-selling title in a crossover will see a sales boost, but that’s not the case with Suicide Squad this month, likely because of the absence of Jim Lee on these two issues.

Well that didn’t go very well. DC went to the Rebirth well one too many times, it appears. These specials were meant to provide a bridge sorts between the Justice League vs Suicide Squad event and next month’s new Justice League of America title, but what retailers saw were four one-shots featuring c-list characters. And with a good chunk of money already tied up in four weekly issues of JL vs SS, there wasn’t much left over for four weekly one-shots, even with Rebirth in the title. DC have to hope that this doesn’t poison the well for next month’s Justice League of America Rebirth.

114 - THE KAMANDI CHALLENGE ($4.99)
01/2017: Kamandi Challenge #1 of 12 -- 23,576

Was the comics world really crying out for a redux of the 80s era DC Challenge, wherein various writers and artists play exquisite corpse with an old Kirby creation? Well no. But at $5 a pop, it doesn’t need to sell terribly many copies to stay afloat. It will be interesting to see if this can stay on schedule (my recollection of the DC Challenge is that it ran notoriously behind schedule…)

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.

Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Image is not a normal comics publisher, and the typical metrics for sales success may not apply. For many titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer, Heidi MacDonald or anyone at The Comics Beat, the National Association of Home Builders, or my former neighbor’s dog Miles.

The author of this column does weekly snapshots of Amazon comic sales charts at http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/ and tweets about comics and related subjects on Twitter at @davereadscomics (PM me there if you need to contact me).

As always, we welcome your comments and corrections below. Please try to keep things civilized.

  1. Correction: DC actually had one more title for sale in January as opposed to December (When I originally wrote the column I left out Looney Tunes; I went back and added that, but neglected to make the correction in the intro.)

  2. Great column as usual!

    Some items of note:

    – Batman sales will probably jump up as David Finch returns for the popular Bane story and then we have the Flash/Batman crossover that deals with the Smiley button from Watchmen..!

    – Vertigo monthly sales are low but their backlist is incredible – truly a model that the entire industry has emulated: every month Vertigo sells copies of perrenials like Preacher, Sandman, 100 bullets, Fables, Invisibles, and more. Just think of the new titles as building the ever growing back list (check out the bookscan article on this very site). I do think Vertigo should pare down the monthlies to 4 or so titles per month ala Young Animal or the HB titles

    – Gotham Academy is a besteller at the scholastic book fair. So low monthly sales don’t matter as trade sales through this different outlet are massive.

    – Midnighter trade sales were high enough to warrant the Midnighter/Apollo mini – which was excellent. Hope to see more

I really admire DC for publishing a true variety of genres and titles and playing the long game in terms of a evergreen backlist.

  3. from the Brian Hibbs article on this site – just an example in regards to Vertigo:

At #5 is first volume of Garth Ennis’ and the late Steve Dillon’s “Preacher” (29k), though we can’t tell from the chart at this distance of how much of that was from the TV show, and how much was from the glowing national press after Dillon’s unfortunate death. Combined, all six volumes of “Preacher” make the Top 750, selling about 82k copies total.

Just one series – Preacher bringing in 82K in sales – say at $20 per trade – that is roughly $1.6M in sales..!! More than enough to subsidize any new Vertigo monthlies and to justify the imprints existence.

  4. While the sales on the individual issues of “Batman” have dropped, the two issues for the month are still presumably higher than sales would have been of one “Batman” series and one “Batman: Streets of Gotham” type of series.

  5. I give DC credit for making The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom a mini-series instead of acting like it’s an ongoing to try and get more readers.

  6. Hopefully, DC’s upcoming BANE maxi-series will be successful enough to warrant further 12 issue series. I’d like to see a CREEPER maxi-series, although I know that’s a longshot.

    Steve

  7. Kamandi #1 was $4.99 (multiple stories, slightly higher page count), and it goes back to $3.99 for the rest of the run.
A Kamandi project always seems to be on someone’s wish list at DC, so this is finally that dream come to fruition. I think Simone and Willingham were 2 of those “dreamers,” and they’re part of this.
The original DC Challenge had a few writers & artists on each issue, which I guess was more prone for delays. This format is just 1 (different) creative team per book.

Captain Atom isn’t really a nostalgic project – DC just got the old writers to do a new Rebirth-era story. From what I understand it’s following up on whatever happened with Capt. Atom in New 52…

And those Everafter numbers are dreadful. Fables shed readers very slowly, this is losing 1k per issue now. And it’s Vertigo, so that can’t last much longer… O_o
