Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.

Two major happenings in April for DC: “The Button” crossover between Batman and The Flash that ties into the Rebirth über-plot; and the price increase of the DC Rebirth monthly titles from $2.99 to $3.99.

“The Button” obviously had a huge impact on sales for the two titles affected, and continues into next month as well (more on this the entires for the affected titles below).

The price increase has, at least for the moment, had little affect on sales. Retailers as a group, at least at the outset, did not drop their orders precipitously. It remains to be seen how readers will react, and thus we could see a delayed reaction. But seeing as they’re already conditioned to spending $3.99 on a comic, it doesn’t seem like it’ll take too much of a bite out of sales, and should keep some of the marginal titles going a bit longer. Again, more on this below).

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

Batman #21 kicked off “The Button” crossover with The Flash, promising to advance the Rebirth über-plot. DC was confident that the comics would sell well based on the strength of the story and art and thus kept the number of gimmicks and variants to a minimum.

Hah, no! They gimmicked it up, bringing back the lenticular cover shenanigans that paid dividends with huge sales a couple of times in the New 52 era (Villains Month and Futures End). Because the lenticular variants were priced differently, they received their own separate entires in Diamond-NA’s Top 300 for the month, resulting in the sales being split across the two price points (note that the two different $2.99 covers were combined into the same entry). Thus Batman #21 was the best-selling comic of the month, despite its appearing below Marvel’s Secret Empire #0 on the Top 300.

Buried in all the hubbub about issue #21 is the fact that sales on issue #20 were ever so slightly above those of the previous issue. Given the concern over Batman‘s slide below the 100K mark this is good news and an indication that perhaps things have finally settled in for the Rebirthed Batman title (though we won’t really know until after “The Button” is over).

The Flash #21 featured the second installment of “The Button” crossover, and as with Batman there were multiple covers at multiple price points, so we’ve combined them in these charts. While sales weren’t quite as high as for Batman (it was Part 2, and also Not Titled Batman), percentage-wise the gains for The Flash are much higher. And like Batman, there is a negligible difference in the sales from issue #19 to issue #20 as well.

Still not stabilizing. Snyder is leaving the title after issue #15, which may be a good time for DC to regroup and end the title. Not to imply that this sales level for a $5 book is bad at all, but if DC wants to continue with a monthly continuity-adjacent series a relaunch would give things a boost.

My prescription for Justice League would be to take advantage of the fact that since you can’t really do continuity-heavy with these characters all having their own titles, bring in different creative teams to do two- to four-issue arcs.

Still doing relatively well for a Wonder Woman series at this stage of the game. Will the movie (due out in early June) have any affect on the sales of the comic single issues? History says its not likely, but who knows…?

The top selling Rebirth monthly with an increase to $3.99.

Let’s do the math:

Titans #9: 42,557 * $2.99 = $127,245.43 retail.
Titans #10: 40,893 * $3.99 = $163,163,07 retail.

An increase of nearly $36K in retail.

Now granted these are sales to retailers, not to customers. It’s possible that there will be a mass rejection by customers to the $1 price increase on the monthlies. But at least on the outset, retailers (as a group) don’t see this as likely. And I like to think that most retailers have a good idea as to how their customers will react.

Sales on Titans will have to drop to 31,891 to equal the same retail dollar as the last $2.99 issue (which at a standard attrition rate of 3.5% will take seven months).

239 - SAVAGE THINGS (Vertigo) ($3.99)
03/2017: Savage Things #1 of 8 -- 10,568
04/2017: Savage Things #2 of 8 -- 6,507 (- 38.4%)

An expected second issue drop, but when you debut at just 10.5K, you need to do better than expected to keep your head above water.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month; or they show up in the year-end Top 1000. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Likewise, any lower numbers due to returns or other factors returns will also be reflected in the brackets. Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.
Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer, Heidi MacDonald or anyone at The Comics Beat, The International Organization for Standardization, or my former neighbor’s dog Miles.

The author of this column does weekly snapshots of Amazon comic sales charts at http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/ and tweets about comics and related subjects on Twitter at @davereadscomics (PM me there is you need to contact me).
As always, we welcome your comments and corrections below. Please try to keep things civilized.

  1. In the entry under Titans I wrote: “The top selling Rebirth monthly with an increase to $3.99.”

Clearly this is untrue, as Super Sons placed higher. Sorry about the mistake!

  2. It’s interesting that the price-increased monthly $3.99 titles (I.e. Super Sons, Batwoman) still sell for $2.99 on comixology. I know these numbers don’t account for digital but I don’t think I’ve heard that point addressed anywhere.

On a separate note, one thing I’m not sure publishers always take into account when raising prices is the shorter leash a customer gives a $3.99 title. Even if sales don’t drop enough to offset the increased revenue in the first few months, I think a lot of customers (like me) do pay attention to price. And I know I might be willing to pay $3.99 if a title’s really delivering the goods, but the moment it starts to feel phoned-in, I’m gone. Whereas I’m more forgiving on a $2.99 title.

Re: Justice League – I think JL usually sells better when it IS more tied to continuity (I.e.Johns run). In my opinion, JL should be the main story of the DCU – the title where big things happen. I think part of the problem now is that it feels kind of irrelevant.

  3. “12 – ALL STAR BATMAN ($4.99)
Snyder is leaving the title after issue #15, ”

That was a misunderstanding due to bad reading comprehension. He’s clarified his run will be about 25 issues.

  4. Yeah, the price increase means I’m dropping a couple of middling books (or sticking with them to the inevitable cancellation at #12). The only saving grace DC has here is raising the prices in the middle of storylines, so people might stick with them for a few extra issues.

Kamandi Challenge has to make it to 12 because of who is on the book and subsequent trades, but it’s looking like it could finish selling 5K copies by issue 12.

What happened to the monthly Marvel analysis? I want to see how bad things are as it’s been a couple of months since the last one…

  5. I think the Justice League idea only works if there’s a decent talent pool to draw from. If you can get the Grant Morrisons and Ed Brubakers of the world to come in and do one-shots/short arcs, sure, that can be a successful title. But the talent pool at the big two is pretty dry at the moment, so you’ll end up getting like, Cullen Bunn or something and sales will be shit.

  6. “I think a lot of customers (like me) do pay attention to price. And I know I might be willing to pay $3.99 if a title’s really delivering the goods, but the moment it starts to feel phoned-in, I’m gone.”

I totally agree with this. I occasionally have books that I consider to be on “the chopping block” for various reason. At $2.99, I’ll wait it out for a few issues to see if I’m losing interest or if I just don’t like the particular artist/storyline. At $3.99, I go ahead and drop the book regardless.

  7. I liked the point in the analysis where it was pointed out that a dollar raise in price bought the title 7 months of life. Seven months.

It’s different for every title and there’re tons of other contributing factors and of course, this exercise is moot because we never have the full picture. But I’ve thought of this before — and calculated it for myself in years past. If we’ve thought of it then DC’s thought of it.

The market pace is staggering to me. You begin to see why Marvel and DC and anyone who is going to have some kind of hold in the direct market need to use gimmicks and incentives and big events and hype to keep it all going. cracra.

  8. So pleased that Batman and Flash Button arc were basically the Top 2 sellers of the month. Look forward to seeing how parts 3 and 4 do in the next chart.

I would of thought Dini on Harley Quinn would get more of a rise. It was sold out of a couple of places. Maybe they just didn’t order enough.

The move to 3.99 on some titles wont affect me to much. I am not buying many of them. But I will definitely continue with Wally in the Titans and Super Sons has been a really fun read. (Highly Recommend it!) I am still debating on Batwoman and Red Hood.

Also, they should really just cancel New Superman, Cyborg, Superwoman and Blue Beetle. Try 4 new series! I would love a new Booster Gold title. Plus Wally West having his own title again (Hey! He started this whole resurgence for DC ;) ) Plus I guess they do have Legion and JSA on the horizon (but that could be another year)

  9. Also, I agree with what others have said about Justice League. Right now its just a ‘meh’ book. It really needs a new creative team ASAP.

  10. 03/2017: Superman #18 — 57,879 (+ 6.1%)
    03/2017: Superman #19 — 56,439 (- 2.5%)
    04/2017: Superman #20 — 53,373 (- 5.4%)
    04/2017: Superman #21 — 51,373 (- 3.7%)

I thought giving these characters long convoluted histories was supposed to drastically improve their sales?

  11. I’m not too concerned about Justice League. I much prefer the universe to revolve around stronger single character titles, with minimal line wide stories driving things. Johns’ run was superb, but the character books were stifled by having to keep pace with its arcs until it all fell apart during DCYou. I want other readers to read Superman or Green Arrow instead of Justice League if they have to pick.

  12. The double Marvels analysis si almost done, just putting the finishing touch to it this week end. Sorry. Hope this will be worth the wait.
With the price icnrease at DC, did they improve the cover quality paper or came back to 22p -yeah, I’m dreaming-?

I reckon DC is quite cognizant of that. I’m guessing that’s the primary reason why they still haven’t increased pricing on their biweekly titles to $3.99 when there are plenty of articles suggesting they should do exactly that.

Sure, a price increase on biweeklies would give DC higher revenue short term. However, once customers drop titles, it becomes so much harder to bring them back into the fold.

Agreed. Goodness knows that’s my problem with Marvel right now. Too difficult/expensive to follow a series via single issues given all the simultaneous events and crossovers requiring purchase of multiple books. DC does it, too, but since Rebirth, not to the same extent as Marvel. Strongly considering just dropping all my Marvel floppies and waiting on Marvel Unlimited.

    Nope still 20 pages.

They badly needed that price increase for Cyborg, Blue Beetle and New Super-Man. Reckon those titles are just barely breaking even or even running at a loss. Guessing if it wasn’t for variants for every single issue, DC probably would’ve gone the self-cover route same as Marvel to save on costs.

Mind, DC does use slightly thicker paper for their covers compared to the inside pages. My guess is 70-80lb for cover, then like 50-60lb inside pages. Image Comics seems to use 70-80lb with self-cover. Marvel seems to use 50-60lb with self-cover.

Going by my copy of Gamora #5, even Marvel’s down to just 20 story pages.

Front Cover, Back Cover, Inside Front Cover and Inside Back Cover – 4 pages
Credit page and recap – 1 page
    Inside ads – 7 pages

Given DC comics have 32 inside pages of which 12 pages are for ads (majority in-house), I don’t understand why DC couldn’t be bothered with putting in a recap page.

“Strongly considering just dropping all my Marvel floppies and waiting on Marvel Unlimited.”

I did this a couple of years ago and haven’t looked back. Its a great value. I used to need to read everything the week it came out, but the wait on MU doesn’t bother me at all anymore. I find the marvel titles I enjoy most are the ones just telling their own story (I.e. Dr. Strange, Thor) and being 6 months behind doesn’t really matter.

  16. Yeah Suzene they did have free digital copies. That was actually a nice surprise when I saw the freebies on Super Sons and Titans
