As predicted, DC has announced details of DC UNiverse, its streaming app that will include three new live action and animated series, and at long last DC’s answer to Marvel Unlimited. DC Universe will include a “rotating, curated selection” including both Golden and Silver age comics as well as recent New 52 hits aimed at a passionate DC fan. Via a fact sheet, titles include:

The comics reader will include “native, untethered access across devices from a smartphone or tablet to a living room screen rendered in vivid detail.”

“We wanted the DC UNIVERSE comic reader to be a blend of art and technology that would further enhance fan’s experiences of the live-action and animated programming on DC UNIVERSE,” said Dan DiDio, publisher, DC Entertainment. “This hand-curated selection from our decades of comic creations gives fans a thematic digital longbox to carry with them on the device of their choosing or lets them watch exclusive video content on a big screen followed by the comic that inspired it.”

Here’s how it will look on your iPad:

DC UNiverse will also include new series, including a live action Titans, and animated Swamp Thing and Doom Patrol – with Harley Quinn waiting in the wings. And also classic DC themed content.

No price has been announced, but you can sign up for a free trial.

You can read the full PR below, but obviously for comics readers, this seems like a good way to access a lot of content. Marvel Unlimited has a six month waiting period and DC universe seems to be more about classic titles – although just how close it gets to pub date will determine how upset retailers get.

The streaming service is also a way for fans to connect and this does seems, from my eyes anyway, like a deep dive For those “passionate” DC fans.

Here’s more images and information. The press kit includes images of your top DC execs so you can keep an eye out for them:

WATCH

At the heart of DC UNIVERSE will be all-new exclusive original live-action and animated series based on DC’s iconic characters. Developed by Warner Bros. Television, Swamp Thing and Doom Patrol are scheduled to debut in 2019, following the dramatic, live-action adventure series Titans which premieres later this year. Warner Bros. Animation is also developing a slate of animated TV series based on existing fan favorites, including Harley Quinn and the highly anticipated third season of the popular Young Justice: Outsiders animated series which are both scheduled to debut in 2019.

  • Titans follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find belonging in a gritty take on the classic Teen Titans franchise. Dick Grayson and Rachel Roth, a special young girl possessed by a strange darkness, get embroiled in a conspiracy that could bring Hell on Earth. Joining them along the way are the hot-headed Starfire and loveable Beast Boy. Together they become a surrogate family and team of heroes.

  • Doom Patrol is a reimagining of one of DC’s strangest group of outcasts: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Woman and Crazy Jane. Led by the mysterious Dr. Niles Caulder, they’re called into action by the ultimate hero for the digital age, Cyborg. Banding together these rejects find themselves on a mission that will take them to the weirdest and most unexpected corners of the DC Universe.

  • Swamp Thing follows Abby Arcane as she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets. When unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe.

  • Young Justice: Outsiders features the return of the fan favorite animated series with a huge cast of DC’s most iconic young superheroes – plus brand-new characters, many of whom are just discovering their unique meta-powers and special abilities. Set against the backdrop of a rich, deep world that touches all corners of the DC Universe, the season focuses on meta–trafficking, and an intergalactic arms race for control of these super–powered youths.

  • Harley Quinn follows Harley’s adventures after she breaks up with the Joker and strikes out on her own in this new adult animated comedy. With the help of Poison Ivy and a ragtag crew of DC castoffs, Harley tries to earn a seat at the biggest table in villainy: the Legion of the Doom.

An assortment of DC’s most beloved superhero films will also be available at launch for exclusive streaming windows, including all four original Superman movies as well as a selection of epic animated movies including Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, Green Lantern: First Flight, and Wonder Woman. 1. I think this service will be a big fail. Why not include all of the DC comics library? The Comics are the big selling point to most fans, it’s where the stories began. I don’t hold high hopes for the quality of the tv series in production because…well… look at every other series based on comics out there, not many great ones. And it’s US only? Why? Don’t they want international money? Or is it because Warner wants to sell the tv rights overseas country by country?

  2. I’m pretty sure that both the ‘Doom Patrol’ and ‘Swamp Thing’ series are supposed to be live-action, as is the ‘Metropolis’ series that doesn’t seem to get a mention in the press release.

  3. Blocker, I don’t think DC is willing or ready to embrace a full library subscription service. Doing so would allow a certain chunk of readers to fully disengage from the print market altogether. Then you have the Marvel dilemma – a readership that can’t sustain a print comic series beyond 6 to 12 issues without a major reboot or change up of creators. If I could read all DC or Marvel comics digitally for less than $30 a month, I’d quit buying new comics today. Anything independent, I could get through Comixology Unlimited or pick up trade paperbacks if/when they got released. DC knows this and will put this option off until they can balance the loss in print subscribers with gain in flat fee digital subscribers. This “curated” approach at least lets them test the market to see how many people are interested in the old material, and what types of series are they interested in.

  4. I understand the dilemma with comic streaming services, I’ve found Marvel Unlimited to be pretty underwhelming mainly because the newer content is so terrible. I think the answer is probably ComiXology, by targeting sales of comics I want to read across genres and publishers I’m enjoying using that service ( can’t get ComiXology unlimited as I’m in NZ). I think all publishers have priced themselves way too high with print and digital though, for instance to buy a new trade here is $50, I can get a months worth of 4 different video or gaming streaming services for that price! There’s so much cheaper content out there. And I’m not paying $10 NZ for a single issue ever…

  5. For me here in the US, marvel unlimited has roughly three to four issues a week new that are worth reading and sometimes the added offerings from the back catalog can be impressive as well. All for ten books a month. I certainly am looking forward to see pricing and content details for DC, but I’m certain that the shows alone will be worth the price!
