Okay that was fast! Barely had the umbrellas dried out from Vertigo’s gloomy, rainy funeral than DC has jumped back into the creator-driven horror business with Hill House Comics: a pop-up line being show run by Joe Hill, best known for Locke & Key in the comics and NOS4A2 on the screen.
The EW story doesn’t mention whether these stories are creator-owned or not, but they are certainly creator driven and DC did promise that they wouldn’t be backing away from creator owned material, despite Vertigo going away.
As revealed at EW, the line will comprise five titles:

Basketful of Heads, written by Hill and illustrated by Leomacs – has a tight pitch: a girl fighting some home invaders is aided by a Viking axe with magical powers. “It can lop off a head in a single stroke, but then the head keeps talking. So you get a grindhouse Rashomon, as the heads stack up and each of them tells their own version of what they’ve done and why they had to do it.”dollhouse hill house horror
The Dollhouse Family, written by Mike Carey and illustrated by Peter Gross – explores “the life of Alice, who was gifted a big beautiful dollhouse as a child, filled with a magical family of dolls. As she gets older, Alice returns to the dollhouse, with unexpected results.”

The Low, Low Woods, written by Carmen Maria Machado and illustrated by Dani – Machado (Her Body and Other Parties) is a respected fiction writer making her comics debut. The book is about “a Pennsylvania mining town afflicted by a mysterious plague that eats memories.”

Daphne Byrne, written by Laura Marks and illustrated by Kelley Jones – Marks is a TV writer who worked with Hill on the ungreenlit Locke & Key adaptation. The story is  “set in the gaslit 1800s New York, where the titular girl discovers a strange, insidious entity within her body.”
Plunge, written by Hill and an artist to be named later – a take on John Carpenter’s The Thing: “Back in the ’80s, a highly advanced research vessel went missing near the Arctic Circle, only to suddenly reappear 40 years later, now sending a distress signal. So a team of American researchers is sent to salvage the vessel, even as a wintry storm approaches.” 
There will also be a two-page installment of a Hill-written serial called Sea Dogs which involves werewolves and the British Navy.
Hill House Horror is certainly a spawn of Vertigo’s earliest days as a horror-tinged imprint,  with such Vertigo vets as the Lucifer team of Carey and Gross  and OG horror-meister Jones on board, but the new teams are strong as well and Hill loves writing comics. And here’s the “Black Label” label in action, signalling that this is no tale for tots, but only those 17 and up!
Will the sales for these books improve on the dwindling ones for  Vertigo titles? We’ll find out on October 30th, when the first issue of Basketful of Heads comes out.

This October, DC will team up with best-selling author Joe Hill (NOS4A2Locke & Key) to present Hill House Comics, a new pop-up line of horror comic books. DC’s long-standing tradition of publishing thought-provoking and riveting horror from HOUSE OF MYSTERY to classic SANDMAN will continue with this new line featuring five original limited series meant to chill the bones and summon nightmares with smart, subversive narratives and haunting, heart-stopping visuals. And it all begins this fall, in time for a very haunting Halloween.

“Anyone who’s paying attention knows we’re in the middle of a new golden age of horror: films like Get Out, Hereditary, It Follows and plain old It have raised the bar higher and higher,” says Hill. “Meanwhile, ongoing shows like AMC’s The Terror and Netflix’s Stranger Things have shattered preconceived notions about what’s possible in episodic terror TV. There’s great stuff happening in comics, of course—in a field of unbounded creativity and wacko visionaries, there’s always great stuff happening—but greedy me wants more.

“At Hill House Comics we aim to shock the senses and soak the page in red, with new, hooky horror from seasoned old hands and young masters of the field, all set free to share their most disturbing nightmares…for your pleasure! The books are backed by DC’s second-to-none comic book craftsmanship, and we’re working with the very best editors on parole from Arkham Asylum to craft unputdownable tales of menace and madness. I can’t wait to share some fresh scares with comic book readers everywhere. It’s going to be fun.”

The first of these new monthly comics will debut on October 30 with BASKETFUL OF HEADS, written by Joe Hill with art by Leomacs, followed by four other series in subsequent months, including:

  • THE LOW, LOW WOODS by Carmen Maria Machado (Her Body and Other Parties) and Dani (2000 AD, Coffin BoundDeep Roots)
  • DAPHNE BYRNE by Laura Marks (TV writer and producer, playwright of Bethany) and Kelley Jones (SWAMP THING, DEADMAN, THE SANDMAN)
  • PLUNGE by Hill and artist TBD

In addition, a backup story titled “Sea Dogs,” written by Hill and featuring lycanthropes terrorizing a crew of sailors at sea, will run in the back of every issue from the line.

Hill House Comics will get its first spotlight at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, with a panel hosted by Hill and Doyle, with other special guests. The panel will be held Friday, July 19, at 4:15 p.m. in room 6DE.

The Revolution is screwed.

In 1779 the pathetic American navy is a pile of smoldering wrecks choking the Penobscot River. Imperial Britain has amassed the mightiest fleet the world has ever known, led by the HMS Havoc, a 90-gun second rate that has sunk a forest of French, Spanish and American frigates, sketching a trail of devastation that stretches all the way from St. Kitts to Machias, Maine. The faltering Continental Congress can’t hope to match England’s sea power, and they’re just desperate enough to make a deal with the devil…or even three.

Spymaster Benjamin Tallmadge proposes allowing three lycanthropes to be pressed into British service aboard the Havoc. Three patriotic werewolves might be all it takes to butcher the ship from the inside out and paint the decks red. It’s true, their powers are infernal, their minds are mad and their loyalty can in no way be trusted. And yet what else can a desperate nation do…but let slip the dogs of war?


  1. I’m on board for probably 3 or 4 of them. I don’t like horror movies, but I do love horror comics. Hopefully they spotlight some good horror talent. We need more of it in comics!
