Dark Horse hooplaDark Horse has surprised N. American fans of popular manga artist Kenji Tsuruta with another series that they can add to their collections. Launching May 15, 2024 Captain Momo’s Secret Base Volume 1 – described as a “saucy” slice-of-life adventure which features “action, humor, and a very ornery cat” – will zoom onto shelves with the speed of a rocket on its way past Proxima Centauri.

This oversized (5 3/4″ x 8 1/4″) 140-page volume is available for pre-order now from comic shops and bookstores now, with a cover price of $14.99.

Kenji Tsuruta, best known for Emanon, Wandering Island and Spirit of Wonder, the first of which we announced back in July is finally getting a fourth volume, this time brings us the tale of a woman and her cat on a mission through space. While this sounds cosmic, the story focuses on their everyday lives, complete with mundane ZOOM calls that take “half an hour just to ask a question!”

Here’s how Dark Horse describes the series:

“In the year 3019 AD, humanity has gotten even more work casual: most of the time, Momo doesn’t bother to wear her captain’s uniform—or anything at all—onboard the cargo vessel Blue Chateau, as she struggles against interstellar tedium, company directives, low battery strength, and her ever-underfoot cat Grandpa John. But fear not, equipped with plenty of reading material and a crate of peach liqueur, in the long haul past Proxima Centauri, space slacker Captain Momo will at last prove Newton correct—a body at rest will remain at rest!”

If you’re already a fan of Kenji Tsuruta’s work, you can expect gorgeous, detailed artwork, and a beautifully crafted and funny story. If you aren’t yet a fan, you’re in for a treat! You can also pick up other works by Tsuruta from Dark Horse, including Emanon, Wandering Island, and Spirit of Wonder.
