In April Archie Comics will release Chilling Adventures Presents…The Cult of That Wilkin Boy. The new one-shot comes from the creative team of writer Cullen Bunn, penciller Dan Schoening, inker Ben Galvan, colorist Matt Herms, and letterer Jack Morelli, and updates the classic Archie Comics character Bingo Wilkin with a horror twist. Today The Beat is proud to present an early look at interior penciled artwork by Schoening, which offer a glimpse of Bingo and his revamped status quo.
Here’s how Archie Comics describes Chilling Adventures Presents…The Cult of That Wilkin Boy:
Bingo Wilkin is not just a world-renowned musician. He’s an icon. An iconoclast. A legend. A leader. He’s also a master of manipulation with fans and followers willing to do his bidding, no matter how evil it may be. Is too much ever enough when it comes to celebrity? The team behind The Chilling Adventures of Salem return with this psychological thriller about fame and fandom.
“When designing Bingo’s character, I wanted to show how the years of fame altered not only his personality, but his overall appearance,” artist Dan Schoening told The Beat. “From a more fresh indie punk look to a long-haired, blazer-wearing weary rocker. I also found inspiration in Robert Johnson‘s life story and music. A blues player that has influenced many musicians, and as legend has it, made a deal at the crossroads, as well.”
Archie Art Director Vincent Lovallo praised Schoening’s work on the one-shot. “Something I really admire about Dan is his ability to depict different characters and locales so naturally,” he said. “It’s as if he’s met the cast and been to these places himself. Using dynamic expressions, heavy shadows, and intense perspective, Dan brings Bingo’s world to life along with a dark, cinematic quality, which works perfectly for this bio-pic-like story.”
“It was a blast to team up with the creative forces from CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SALEM again,” Schoening added. “Cullen’s superb writing makes conjuring up images effortless, while Ben and Matt add their amazing artistic skills to make this a book I’m extremely proud of.”
