The team of Superboy and Robin is set to return next month. The children of Superman and Batman are teaming up once again in a new series, Challenge of the Super-Sons, by original series writer Peter J. Tomasi and artist Max Raynor. Jorge Corona and Evan Stanley will also provide artwork for the series, with original Super-Sons artist (and current Batman artist) Jorge Jiménez on covers for the series. The fourteen-part Super-Sons series will be available weekly as a digital-exclusive, with the first installment arriving on December 14th.
Here’s how DC describes Challenge of the Super-Sons:
Picking up where Tomasi’s sensationalSuper SonsandAdventures of the Super Sonsleft off, Damian and Jon—the assassin-trained son of Batman and the boy-next-door son of Superman—tackle their greatest threat ever: the deadly DOOM SCROLL. Whoever (whomever? We can never tell) has their name inscribed on this ancient and magical parchment will be killed post-haste. Now, the evil powers-that-be have written the names of the Justice League on the deadly doc, and Superboy and Robin are the only ones who can save their dads from certain doom! The catch? No one can know it was the boys that saved them.
One of the biggest success stories out of the DC Rebirth initiative were the Super-Sons, the team of Jon “Superboy” Kent and Damian “Robin” Wayne. The pair have headlined in their own ongoing series, an eight-issue miniseries, and even a series of graphic novels for young readers. Even with Jon Kent aged up and sent into the far future to join the Legion of Super-Heroes the popularity of the duo and their friendship has endured.
In a statement accompanying the announcement, Tomasi described what keeps drawing him back to the Super-Sons:
“Stories about Jon and Damian at this time in their lives allows me to tap back into those early years of my own life of being a crazy kid, while also allowing me to mine the fertile ground of my own son’s current adventures,” said Tomasi, “which in turn helps keep me tapped into the general zeitgeist of today’s youth and what they’re going through and thinking about. Jon and Damian are so different—the angel and the devil on your shoulder so to speak—with each one having such a distinctive backstory and perspective that the drama between them is organic and damn easy to bring to life on the page. Best of all, it’s a helluva lotta fun!”
No word in the announcement about a print release for this series, though given the success of the original graphic novels featuring the pair it seems likely a collection of the series will arrive at some point next year.
