New RED clip: You wouldn’t like Helen Mirren when she’s bored

2
A new clip from RED, the Bruce Willis-starring movie loosely based on RED by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, has been released, and to the surprise of no one, it features what is the most eagerly anticipated aspect of the film: Dame Helen Mirren blowing shit up. We're told RED has been tracking very well and may even be the graphic novel base hit that perks up an otherwise painful year.

New Spidey Andrew Garfield was to the webbing born

0
There's a new Spider-Man franchise underway and it stars young Brit actor Andrew Garfield as the webslinger. But who is this man and will he be able to fill the tights and heavy eyewear of Tobey Maguire and Nicholas Hammond before him? Doing the rounds to promote his new film NEVER LET ME GO, he opened up for the first time about playing Peter Parker, and even if it's just his press agent telling him what to say, as is so often the case these days, Garfield has sold it beautifully:

Welcome back, team America

Maybe it's a little sad that summer is over, as dead leaves are already rattling in the gutters around Stately Beat Manor, but we always think of autumn as a time of socializing, renewal, and lowered electricity bills. There is much to celebrate! To kick things off, here's a laugh from the inimitable Mitchell and Webb. Freddie and Daphne and their lesbian friend are okay to invite to the dinner party, but what about their pothead friend?

Coming Attractions: September 2010

11

The following is a selection of new titles due to be published in September 2010.

There is no particular order to the titles presented below.

This list is not comprehensive, as there are over 275 graphic novel titles scheduled for this month. If you would like to browse them at your leisure, click here. Instead, I have selected titles which caught my interest. These are not necessarily titles I will purchase, but which I will definitely look at once they arrive at my local comics shop or bookstore. Please be advised that publication dates are not set in stone. Also, your local comics shop might receive copies before your local neighborhood website or library. Links connected to publishers will link to the publisher's website, sometimes to the exact title. Links for the ISBN-13 (also known as the Bookland EAN) will take you to the title as featured on BarnesAndNoble.com . I consider my tastes to be rather eclectic. If you feel I've neglected or slighted a title, publisher, or creator, please feel free to mention it in the comments below.

Monthly lists such as this will be posted at the end of the previous month. I will also be posting specific subject lists (comic strips, comics history and surveys, superheroes...) for each season, but these will not have a set schedule.

Borders struggles to readjust

Earlier this week the Borders bookstore chain announced its earnings for the quarter ending July 31 and the results were weak, as expected. Sales fell 11.5%, to $526.1 million, with a $51.6 million loss.

Set your TiVo for the Dream King! After years of limbo for a proposed SANDMAN movie, the hugely popular Neil Gaiman fantasy comics series is now in development as a TV series, THR reports. Warners is trying to get the property going, with Supernatural producer Eric Kripke, on the short list to develop.

True Blood Recap: Harsh Daylight Shines on an Unanchored Plot

13
After a couple of basically strong episodes, the Fresh Blood just didn’t congeal this week.  The gestalt was off.  True Blood’s chi is out of whack, and, quite frankly, people, it didn’t leave me anxiously awaiting the finale.  Many of the scenes were good on their own but just as many felt awkward and immaterial, leaving the whole episode lacking in narrative center.  Take the opening scene: Bill’s blood bond to Sookie leads him to Fangtasia where he has a fun little run in with Pam.  Starting off with a fight scene between two distinct characters that rub each other the wrong way and don’t interact often was nice.  Particularly when Pam mocks Bill’s pretense of being in a normal, monogamous relationship with Sookie then outfoxes the stronger, older vampire by spraying silver flecked water in his eyes.
