WOW: DC’s Christmas Party from 1945 is a window into the Golden Age

9
WOW! Talk about historic finds! DC Comics just tweeted this historic photo from a comics industry Christmas party from 70 years ago. While there is a slight Shining view to it (is that Hank Kanalz I see in the back?), it's also an amazing view into the Golden Age. After it was tweeted DC Comics was kind enough to send me a high res scan which I am sharing with you so all the comics historians out there can pour over it. There is a handwritten guest list as well, but its provenance isn't known so I am not posting it.

Gilbert Hernandez to present erotic biblical tales in Garden Of Flesh graphic novel

0
In a world where the word unfettered is used quite a bit, Gilbert Hernandez can truly be said to be unfettered. The Love and Rockets grandmaster is a prolific graphic novelist (in the last couple of years alone, Speak of the Devil, Loverboys, Bumperhead, and Marble Season) and no subject matter is too raw or shocking. His The Twilight Children (drawn by Darwyn Cooke) is currently coming out from Vertigo, and here's a brand new project, Garden Of Flesh which promises Gilbert's own take on Biblical tales:

Cartoonists gone wild on the Fear and Loathing graphic novel tour

0
[Editor's note: Troy Little has gone on tour to support his new graphic novell adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, as you do. Because you need a gonzo comics tour to compliment the ultimate gonzo road trip...okay maybe not quite as wild as Hunter S. Thompson's famous journey. Anyway, Top Shelf provided us with some photos from the tour stop.]

CAB 2015 in pictures: so many comics

1
I would take a haul photo of my CAB 2015 comics but there is not a floor space big enough at Stately Beat Manor to spread them all out. Yes I got that many comics. And yet the one I most desired to read, I paid for but forgot to pick up a copy in all the excitement. Anyway, one tradition I did NOT forget was a series of blurry phone photos of people hanging out and having a good time! ! With no further ado:

24 Hours of Halloween: The Groom by Emily Carroll

0
Emily Carroll -- who just won a British Fantasy Society Award for Best Graphic Novel -- is a Halloween tradition with her amazing webcomics which stretch the boundaries of the medium. Sadly she didn't do a new one this year, but you can read all the old ones here, and the most recent one, The Groom, which manages to find chills in a pipe cleaner. Carroll is truly a master of horror and if you haven't read her other comics, there's no spookier way to spend Halloween.

Today’s grim warning: Noah Van Sciver on breaking in

0
Guys, if you want to get with a woman, do not make her watch Buffalo 66. I repeat, do not watch Buffalo 66 with your woman. I know you think Vincent Gallo is really cool and edgy and it's a romantic film about vengeance and attraction, but it's really about a dangerous psychopath made by a serial abuser who imagines a toxic fantasy of a willing female victim. It is total creepsville plus everyone misses a field goal now and then, just like Jeurys Familia gives up a home run once a year and it happens to be in the World Series.

Mark Beyer to make his first ever con apperance at the Locust Moon Festival

1
Even as the dead leaves rattle through the dooryard, turkeys gargle their last calls and pumpkin spice invades our dreams, there are still a few more comic events to come, including, just this weekend, the Locust Moon Festival in Philadelphia (disclosure: an advertiser on this site.) A lively event for a burgeoning local comics scene, the Locust Moon Fest, run by the comic shop of the same name, will have a stellar guest line up this year, including Chris Claremont, Bill Sienkiewicz, Alexa Kitchen, Ronald Wimberly, Craig Thompson and Dean Haspiel, among many others...and now...Mark Beyer!
