It's month three of DC's new variant cover ordering scheme, where retailers can order as many of the month's themed variant covers as they want at the regular price. As previously suspected, the Selfie variants do not attract as many additional orders as the Bombshell or Batman 75th variants did. It's hard to tell if that is because of a perceived lack of interest in the covers, or an adjustment based on the previous months, or a combination of factors. Next month DC will have round two of the 3D motion covers, hoping to recapture some of the magic of last year's 3D cover stunt. This was a down month for DC. Several of their top sellers did not ship in August: Justice League, Superman Unchained and Sandman Overture. Vertigo sales are particularly moribund: the average Vertigo sales of 9,082 per title is the second lowest since Diamond started reporting actual sales back in 2003. (The lowest month was November 2010, at 9,034.) With The Wake over and Sandman Overture shipping sporadically, Vertigo's top seller this month is short-timer Fables.

Can't get enough of Rocket Raccoon and Groot, the dynamic duo that busted 2014 wide open? Marvel thinks you can't and in November will present no less than 20 comics with Rocket and Groot variant covers, by artists including Chip Zdarsky, Ulises Farinas and Tom Fowler.

Dynamite announced they would be doing a Shaft comic book a few months back, and now they have announced the creative team: David F. Walker and Bilquis Evely. Walker is a writer and filmmaker and one look at his blog BadAzz Mofo will tell you he's a complicated man. Plus he wrote a book on blaxploitation films so, yep. that works. Evely is a Brazillian artist who isn't an obvious choice, but an intriguing one. Variant covers are by Francesco Francavilla, Michael Avon Oeming, Ulises Farinas, Matt Haley, Sanford Greene, and a collaboration between Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz.

In a world where complains about overly idealized heroines are common, Faith, a member of Valiant's Harbinger teen superhero group is a nice break: a normal young woman who is learning to deal with her powers just like every other superbeing. And now she's getting her own one shot by Joshua Dysart and Robert Gill, with variant covers by Joe Quinones, Lucy Knisley and Brian Level. Valiant continues to branch out with their superhero line -- because it's a more diverse world and comics market out there.
