Game of Thrones writer, co-executive producer Bryan Cogman is setting aside one fantasy world for another as he joins Amazon’s Lord of the Rings adaptation. Variety reports that Cogman will work as consultant on the series alongside writers JD Payne and Patrick McKay.
His resume is perfect for the job. Bryan Cogman started out as a writing assistant to controversial Game of Thrones show runners Benioff and Weiss before becoming widely known by the cast and crew as lore master for the series. When the show began development, he had just begun his twentieth reread of the Song of Ice and Fire series. Cogman would go on to write some of the most iconic episodes including Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things, Kissed by Fire and this season’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. It’s worth noting as well that his portfolio includes Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken, an episode fraught with controversy over its depiction of sexual violence. He’s discussed the scene openly and, apparently enough that Amazon is willing to trust him with this iconic franchise.
When Variety asked for comment, Amazon declined, keeping in line with the studio’s secrecy around the project. For now, all we know is that the show will take place before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. It’s a multi-season commitment produced in cooperation with Amazon Studios and the Tolkien Estate and Trust.
