The Folio Society has announced the ultimate collector’s item for fans of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy epic, A Game of Thrones. Available today via the Folio Society website is a “dragon” leather-bound, signed hardcover edition of the book handmade at Ludlow Bookbinders featuring the original artwork by Jonathan Burton and a hidden map compartment, all in a clamshell box to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its release.
There will be just 1 thousand copies in existence, and each one will cost £1,500 (about $2 thousand USD).
“This volume is so stunning it could have been taken directly from the Citadel library itself,” said Folio Society Editor James Rose. “We have been incredibly fortunate to work with the finest British craftspeople on this special 30th anniversary version: from the leather makers who created our incredible dragonskin leather, to the James Cropper paper mill who made our bespoke endpapers, to Ludlow Bookbinders who are binding each volume with care.
“With a limitation page blocked in real gold, a rolled map and a stunning box—and each copy personally signed by George R. R. Martin himself—this is truly a limited edition worthy of the Iron Throne that absolutely every fan of the series needs in their library,” Rose continued.
The 30th anniversary edition of A Game of Thrones comes in a specially designed box with a blocked suedelux interior, a hidden map compartment containing a rolled linen map of the Seven Kingdoms, and a blocked exterior hand-lettered by Stephen Raw. The book features an introduction from Joe Abercrombie and has gilded edges, with Martin’s signature printed on a limitation label blocked in real gold. The hand-made endpapers are watermarked and the head and tailbands are real leather.

A Game of Thrones kicks off Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series, which is the basis for HBO’s fantasy epic series Game of Thrones, with spin-offs like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon exploring the Seven Kingdoms before the events of ASOIAF.
