(This article contains spoilers for Infinite Frontier #6.)

One of the most glaring absences in DC’s line-up since the beginning of the Infinite Frontier era has been Legion of Super-Heroes. The Brian Michael Bendis-written series about the teenaged superheroes of the 31st Century drew to a close at the end of the Future State event, though Bendis has mentioned in his newsletter that the series will be returning.

After the conclusion of the six-issue Infinite Frontier series teased Darkseid’s quest to control “the Great Darkness,” and before last week’s December DC solicits revealed an upcoming Justice League vs. Legion of Super-Heroes storyline, I spoke to Bendis about his recent Jinxworld deal with Dark Horse Comics, and I couldn’t help but slip in a couple of Legion questions at the end.

“I’ll say sooner than later,” Bendis said about a timeframe for Legion‘s return. “It’s actively in production, written and being drawn as we speak, and I’m very excited about it. And also there’s some surprises around Legion that we’ll be announcing soon.”

The writer also said, as a Legion fan himself, he understands the stress over the book not being on the schedule, but that the series’ return will be worth the wait. “I know this is going to Legion fans — of which I am one, I’m a huge Legion fan, and I understand completely the frustration of not having the book out,” Bendis said. “But Legion isn’t like other comics, it takes more time to make it the right way. It just does. And we are grateful for everyone’s patience. And when people see what the product is, I think they’ll be very delighted with the care that went into it.”

As for a direct connection to the Great Darkness, which, in addition to being teased in Infinite Frontier, has also been mentioned a number of times in Bendis’s Legion of Super-Heroes run, the writer was matter-of-fact: “I had two calls with [Infinite Frontier writer] Josh Williamson just last week putting all these pieces together. So yes, the pieces will fit eventually.”

Of course, the nature of how those pieces will fit together, exactly how much crossover there will be, and how it all fits into DC’s Infinite Frontier remain to be seen. Also still up in the air is whether young Jon Kent will continue to operate with the Legion of Super-Heroes in the 31st Century while slightly less young Jon Kent takes up the mantle of Superman in the 21st. I must admit it would be nice to have a series that actually follows The Adventures of Superman When He Was A Boy again.

Presumably answers to those questions and more will start to become clearer when the Justice League 2021 Annual #1 arrives in December.

  1. I cling to every scrap of Legion news like I’m Kate Winslet at the end of Titanic. So thanks, Joe, for keeping me afloat for another month or two!
