Spanish cartoonist Pau‘s graphic novel, Baboon, is getting an American release from Dark Horse Comics. The silent story tells the tale of a baboon who is raised by a leopard, and who, following the leopard’s death, finds and reconnects with the tribe from which he came.

Pau is best known for The Atlas & Axis Saga, an adventure series about two anthropomorphic dogs who set off on a mission to rescue friends and neighbors who have been kidnapped by Vikings. That series, originally published in Spanish and French, was given an English translation by Titan Comics in 2018. Baboon was originally published by Escápula Comics earlier this year; the publisher still has an extended preview of the book up on their site, and it looks both adorable and absolutely gut-wrenching.

Check out the cover and an interior page for Baboon, as well as the full text of the announcement from Dark Horse, below. The 12-page graphic novel is due out in comic shops on July 1st, 2020, with a bookstore release on July 14th.

MILWAUKIE, Ore. (November 11, 2019) — Renowned Spanish writer and artist Pau (Atlas and Axis) brought to life a completely wordless graphic novel for young readers, Baboon! which will be available in North America for the first time July 2020.

Originally published by Spanish publisher Escápula, Baboon! brings to life a sincere and endearing story all through Pau’s gorgeous art. After the death of its adopted leopard mother, an orphaned baboon wanders the wild in search of companionship and a sense of identity.

Luckily for our ape-hero, he stumbles upon the troop of baboons from which he was originally stolen, and falls in love with the troop’s head female. The young baboon will do anything to earn the affection of his new love interest and earn the respect of the animal kingdom while he’s at it.

The 120-page Baboon! arrives in comic shops July 1, 2020 and bookstore July 14, 2020 for $14.99. Pre-order now through AmazonBarnes and Noble, and your local comic shop.
