Fox Searchlight released the first teaser trailer for Scott Cooper‘s Antlers this morning, and the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror film looks pretty creepy, scary and also rather gory.

del Toro has a nice hit in theaters right now with André Ørenthal‘s Scary Stories to Tell in the Darkso he’s been keeping busy since winning the Oscar for The Shape of Water, also released by Searchlight. Long-time comic book movie purveyor David Goyer (The Dark KnightBlade) is also one of the film’s producers.

Antlers is definitely a departure for Cooper, whose first film, the musical drama Crazy Heart, won actor Jeff Bridges an Oscar. Cooper has been venturing further into genre with each movie since then, whether it’s the crime flick Out of the Furnace in 2013, the biopic Black Mass, starring Johnny Depp as Boston mob boss Whitey Bulger in 2015, or his most recent film, the Western Hostiles, starring Christian Bale.

Most of the teaser trailer focuses on young Jeremy Thomas as he tells a fairly well-known fairy tale with a more diabolical twist. I’m also excited that the movie stars Jesse Plemons, who also appeared in Hostiles, because Plemons just gets better and better with each role after appearing on Breaking Bad and in PT Anderson’s The Master.

The screenplay was written by Nick Antosca (based on his short story “The Quiet Boy”) with C. Henry Chaisson.

Searchlight not only released the teaser trailer and poster for Cooper’s film – click on the image at left for the full version of the poster — but also a short summary for the film’s plot. You can watch the new teaser trailer below. As of now, the movie is scheduled for release in 2020.

In ANTLERS, a small-town Oregon teacher (Keri Russell) and her brother (Jesse Plemons), the local sheriff, discover that a young student (Jeremy T. Thomas) is harboring a dangerous secret with frightening consequences.
