Fear can be overwhelming. Most people are afraid of something. Spiders, heights, the dark—the list is long and each person brings their own stuff to their phobias. In the BRAIN Anthology, each tale plays on those unsettling feelings we all get when we encounter that one thing that disturbs us most.

With entries pulled from Webtoons’ 2020 Short Story Contest (like the Heart Anthology earlier this year), each short comic is intended to mess with the mind. Some are ethereal and existential while others seemed pulled from popular anthology series like The Twilight Zone or Black Mirror.

The first story featured is “The Ladder,” by Kotopopi and with art by Kibbitzer. It’s a simple setup: people of all ages and backgrounds sitting at the base of a ladder that seems to stretch into space. There are rumors about this ladder (it changes you, you don’t return), but does anyone really know for sure what it is? And does everyone who dares to climb it see the same thing? The short is a metaphor that strikes deep, no matter where you are in your life.

BRAIN Anthology is currently available to read for free on Webtoons, with updates five days a week. Posting follows an alternating schedule, flipping from stories about the unknown to those that are designed to make your skin crawl.
