By David Carter

Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.

It was one year previous, May 2016, when the DCU Rebirth Special dropped, and the following month when Rebirth started in full. Which would make this a good time to take stock and see what sorts of effects Rebirth has had on DCU sales.

It is tempting to just look at the one month comparisons for titles that had life before and after Rebirth, though that can be tricky in some cases because of special events and/or variant shenanigans, such as “The Button” running through Batman and Flash this month, or the May 2016 “Death of Superman” story.

A good way then to make a Before-After comparison of Rebirth is to look at the average sales across the DCU. (Yes, May 2017 has “The Button” influencing sales, but May 2016 had the DCU Rebirth Special doing the same.) Average DCU sales in May 2016 were 29,927, while in May 2017 they were 39,993, a difference of 10K. If we look instead at median sales the comparison is even more favorable: 19,629 in May 2016 and 35,692 in May 2017! By this measure then, Rebirth has had quite a positive impact on sales for the DCU as a whole, even one year later after things have settled down from all the Rebirth hype.

Now the story for individual titles is going to vary. Some titles are doing much better than they were a year ago, others are worse, and for still others it is a wash. And there are still some problem areas, such as the inability for most DCU limited series to find any sort of traction and the over-extension of the extended Superman family. DC can’t just go around rebooting (whether soft or hard) every time they need to give their super-hero line a sales boost (well, they can, but that is not a healthy long-term strategy and stands the risk of backfiring if they go to that well too often). But for now, I’m calling Rebirth a success from a sales perspective.

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted in June over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

Issue #21 was part 3 of “The Button” crossover with The Flash, as as with issue #21 last month Diamond split the lenticular and non-lenticular covers apart in the Top 300 chart (as they are wont to do whenever different editions of a comic have different prices). As a result, the combined sales are healthily above those of the books reported as #1 and #2 on the chart (Secret Empire #1 & Venom #150). (There were also an additional 8,838 copies of issue #21 this month, and you’ll see them added in to the [bracketed] figure above.)

Alas, issue #23 saw a return to normal sales levels, though things may turn around next month with issue #24 (already announced for a fourth printing as of this writing!)

Ditto for Flash, the fourth and final part of “The Button” crossover with Batman. The difference being that Flash #23 comes in a bit higher than it was pre-crossover. And last month’s issue #21 sees an additional 14K in orders this month.

Flash is clearly one of the bright spots post Rebirth, with a regular (non-crossover) issue sales 20K higher than where the New 52 series ended.

Issue #14 has been solicited as the final issue. Odd that DC would cancel their second-best-selling ongoing series, but I suppose with the departure of Snyder from the title they want to regroup?

There’s a 30K gap in sales between (non-crossover) issues of DC’s best-selling comic, Batman, and its second-best-selling comic, All Star Batman. That’s a problem. Things are improved over the tail end of the New 52 days: there are many more series in the 50K range one month into Rebirth. But things would look much more healthier if there were a couple of books selling in the 70-80K range.

Not sure what to make with the slight bump up on issue #22, other than it being a correction of sorts and signs of the title stabilizing.

Issue per issue, Superman has been outpacing its New 52 counterpart by around 9K for most of its run. The one year comparison looks a bit harsh, but that’s because #52 was the conclusion of the big “Death of Superman” story that ended the New 52 series; the previous issue sold just 38K.

“Lazarus Contract” crossover with Teen Titans and Deathstroke. Usually these sorts of inter-title crossovers only increase the sales of the lower-selling titles, but this appears to be a case of all boats being risen.

No sign yet of the blockbuster movie having any affect on the sales of the single issues. (It was released in early June, so any actual as opposed to perceived demand may be yet to come…) But the WW Rebirth collections have been doing brisk business on Amazon since the release of the movie, so there’s been some positive impact.

Like Superman, Wonder Woman is, issue for issue, selling better than its New 52 version, and is way up on the end of the New 52 series (about 14K higher).

42 - BANE: CONQUEST ($3.99)
05/2017: Bane Conq #1 of 12 -- 41,709

Was the world really clamoring for a twelve-issue Bane maxi-series? 42K is a decent start, much better than most other DCU limited series, but twelve issues? I can see it lasting for six maybe. Following standard attrition metrics, my back-of-the-envelope calculations show this dropping to 17K by the time it’s done (-30% for issue #2, -15% for issue #3, -10% for issue #4, – 5% for issue #5, and -3% thereafter). Shall we come back in eleven months and see?

A whopping four issues of Injustice in May: the final issues of Ground Zero and the start of Injustice 2. The debut issue of Injustice 2 is the strongest start to an Injustice series since Year 2 back in 2014. However Injustice 2 #1 was aided by a Jim Lee variant cover, and the large second issue drop brings it in line with the second issue of Ground Zero.

Teaming up with Hong Kong Phooey. The H-B team-ups generally seem to underperform the DC team-ups, but since this title pretty much exists to service trademarks, it is doing its job here.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month; or they show up in the year-end Top 1000. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Likewise, any lower numbers due to returns or other factors returns will also be reflected in the brackets. Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.
Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

  1. This column lately seems to be running low on commentary. I’d like to see a little more commentary for more of the series.

  2. FWIW All Star Batman is ending because the next arc plus is being turned into a new series in a new format, described by Snyder as something that will better spotlight the art.

So it’s turning from one weird, experimental book to a weirder, more experimental book.

  3. The. standard attrition seems to be keeping DC stable, but the lack of new titles with the sales of the initial launch keeps eating away at market share. While neither of the big two are in happy land, it’s easy to see that DC would probably creep to the #1 spot if Marvel didnt have the Star Wars titles.

  4. “Bug: The Adventures of Forager” is fan-fucking-tastic! Can’t recommend it enough.

If it’s starting at just 18,000 copies sold, I shudder to think at where it will close out…

  5. “There’s a 30K gap in sales between (non-crossover) issues of DC’s best-selling comic, Batman, and its second-best-selling comic, All Star Batman. That’s a problem. ”

Why is that a problem? Ten years ago, in June 2007, there was a 35k gap between DC’s best selling and second best selling on-going title (Justice League vs Flash). Twenty years ago, it was 32k between first and second (JLA vs Superman). I’d bet 50 years ago, when the Batman TV show was on, there was a huge gap between Batman and the next highest DC book, maybe hundreds of thousands of copies. So is it a “problem” or is it “business as usual”?

I’d be curious if something is going to break about Vertigo in the near future. In the September solicitations, they only have two periodicals, both miniseries which will both be done by the end of the year (with their only on-going, ASTRO CITY, skipping a month, which positions it to hit #50 at the end of the year). And two of the three books they have (ASTRO CITY and AMERICAN WAY) are actually transfers from Wildstorm, not really indicative of the historical Vertigo brand. So unless they announce something new soon, there’ll be very little Vertigo left in Vertigo soon.

  6. Its great to see Titans still doing so well. DC needs to give Wally his own monthly again. Or maybe a mini to trial it out first at least. More original Wally West is always a good thing!

  7. Looks like only Batgirl and Supergirl are now selling below their pre Rebirth series. Not a good sign.

Plus Superwoman, New Superman, Cyborg and Blue Beetle cant last much longer with those sales. Wonder if there is a new batch of titles in the works.

  8. DC just increased the price of the monthlies by 33% ($2.99 to $3.99) in April. That got the books a short stay of execution but yes, I expect they’re just finishing out story arcs unless trade sales do unexpectedly well. A possibility for New Super-man since it’s been getting a lot of positive word of mouth.

  9. @rui – a team Superman book could be one of the replacements. Like who appeared in Action comics. That way New Superman and Superwoman don’t go straight into limbo, plus Lex and Steel get more coverage. Worth a shot.

  10. Read this after reading the Marvel May report and wow DC Rebirth feels like a massive success even a year on.

    @sam

I’d argue against that (for now) it might hurt titans and flash’s numbers. DC should avoid repeating Marvel’s Dr Strange/Black Panther disastrous spin off books

  11. @November – I get what you mean. But original Wally doesn’t really appear in Flash, and Titans is only once a month, plus its a team book. I just want more than say 8 new pages (of a 20 page comic) of Wally a month :(
