Welcome to The Beat’s Wednesday Pulse!

This series will check in with what’s coming out in comic stores each and every week, offering insight to some of the most anticipated releases on the stands. In the end, we’re hoping to shine a spotlight on things you might not know you’d enjoy… and hope to offer a space for you to share what you are excited for this week.

Please note: our opinions are ours, and yours are yours – and while we encourage you to share your likes, this is not a forum to discourage others for enjoying what they enjoy. Comics are for everyone.

PREMIERE PUBLISHERS

(THE) GREEN LANTERN #1
(DC COMICS)

(Cover by Liam Sharp)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Superstar writer Grant Morrison (Batman, All-Star Superman) returns to DC alongside red-hot artist Liam Sharp (The Brave AND the Bold, Wonder Woman) to launch a new, ongoing series: THE GREEN LANTERN!

In this debut issue, when Earth’s space cop, Hal Jordan, encounters an alien hiding in plain sight, it sets off a chain of events that rocks the Green Lantern Corps-and quite possibly the Multiverse at large-to its very core. There’s an inter-galactic conspiracy afoot, as well as a traitor in the GL Corps’ ranks, so strap in for more mind-bending adventures in this masterpiece in the making.

THE BEAT SAYS // There’s an audible buzz around this new release, which promises a very episodic, space cop procedural take from the notable cosmic Morrison. That said, the third issue is promising a fight between Hal and God, so you know. Buckle in for some strange stories, with remarkable art from Liam Sharp, who seems to get better and better with each passing project.

OUTER DARKNESS #1 (MR)
(IMAGE COMICS)

(Cover by Afu Chan)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Sci-fi and horror collide in this new series from the co-creator of CHEW! Mankind has colonized the galaxy, but during our interstellar travels, we discovered a terrifying secret out in the Outer Darkness of space. Join Captain Joshua Rigg and the crew of the starship Charon as they encounter demonic possessions, hauntings, cosmic horror, and more! All-star writer JOHN LAYMAN (CHEW) and artist AFU CHAN (Immortal Iron Fists) are ready to let you know that outer space is terrifying.

THE BEAT SAYS // Both of these power-house creators are on hand to offer the world a genre-bending trip through space. Wholly unique, and an interesting addition to the sci-fi landscape in the medium.

NORROWAY TP BOOK 01 BLACK BULL OF NORROWAY
(IMAGE COMICS)

(Cover by Kit Seaton)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Sibylla always wanted adventure, but she didn’t know it would come in the form of a giant, magical bull. Is he a man, or a monster? And who knew a prophecy could be so literal? The first title in a new series co-created by sibling writer/artist team CAT SEATON and KIT SEATON, begins the adventure of a lifetime.

THE BEAT SAYS // A brilliant take on mythological elements, in the graphic novel format that we’re seeing more and more of these days. Folks are wondering what the future of comics will look like? More and more items like this, and less physical format single issues.

WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER ORIGINAL GN
(BOOM! STUDIOS)

(Cover by Joe Quinones)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // It’s time to shut up and return to Camp Firewood in the first-ever, all-new original graphic novel for the beloved, cult classic, Wet Hot American Summer. To tell you all about it, here’s Camp Director Beth. ”Well guys, we made it through the first week of camp in one piece… mostly. Anyway, so I gave the Camp Firewood counselors the night off to head into town to do whatever it is teenagers do and long story short, it led to a surprise camp inspection! Now we have 24 hours to clean up our act or they’re going to shut down Camp Firewood. Luckily, I have the best counselors in the whole wide world…wait, where are those little jerks…in town still?! We are so screwed . . .”

There you go! Join the staff of Camp Firewood in this unforgettable story written by the hilarious, deliciously irreverent Christopher Hastings (Deadpool) and illustrated by artistic dungeon master Noah Hayes (Goldie Vance).

THE BEAT SAYS // The super bizarre movie/Netflix TV show returns here with all of your favourites from the TV show. The creative team on this should match the tone of the other media available perfectly, and will be a treat for fans of the original.

MARVEL RISING TP
(MARVEL COMICS)

(Cover by Gurihiru)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Squirrel Girl meets Ms. Marvel – for the very first time! When Doreen Green volunteers as head counselor for an extracurricular computer-programming class, little does she know junior counselor Kamala Khan also moonlights as a crimefighting super hero! But this coding configuration is more than just ones and zeros when a mysterious new super villain shows her face! Ember Quade can bring video games to life – and that just raised the stakes to a whole new level! Can Doreen and Kamala save the day without blowing their secret identities? Join Ms. Marvel and Squirrel Girl – and a few special guests – as they learn what it truly takes to become the next generation of Marvel heroes! Collecting MARVEL RISING #0, MARVEL RISING: ALPHA, MARVEL RISING: SQUIRREL GIRL/MS. MARVEL, MARVEL RISING: MS. MARVEL/SQUIRREL GIRL and MARVEL RISING: OMEGA.

THE BEAT SAYS // Many of you might recognize this as the collection of several chronological one-shots that caused many readers and retailers alike no end of headaches. Each issue was named something different, and priced at a hefty $4.99, which seemed to our-price the intended all-ages audience. Well, a lesson seems to have been learned here, as Marvel is releasing this collection for a scant $9.99, in a format more typical for all ages graphic novels. A great way to bring in the folks who have discovered and rediscovered Marvel through the Marvel Rising cartoon.

MEND: A STORY OF DIVORCE
(ZUIKER PRESS)

(Cover by Garry Leach)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Sophia, the fourteen-year-old author and protagonist, tells the heart-wrenching story of her parents’ divorce. She was just eleven years old, happy and enjoying life with her mom, dad, and little brother in Las Vegas, Nevada. Unexpectedly, one night, a violent argument disrupted her sleep and shattered her life. The next morning, her parents told her the dreaded news – they were getting divorced. Her dad was moving to California, while Sophia and her brother would stay with their mom. First, she blamed herself. But then, she remembered a note a teacher once wrote on her report card, and was inspired to focus on bringing both parents back into her life. Even if they could not be under the same roof, she thought, they could still share in caring for her and her brother. The book includes helpful advice for parents, as well as a special Teacher’s Corner page.

THE BEAT SAYS // Graphic novels are a wonderful way to help educate young kids regarding complications that arise in “adult” life – especially ones from a perspective closer to their own age.

PART OF IT: COMICS AND CONFESSIONS
(MARINER BOOKS)

(Cover by Ariel Schrag)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Ariel Schrag, a critically-acclaimed memoirist and screenwriter, takes us on a painfully funny tour of her formative years, from her childhood in Berkeley to her mid-twenties in Brooklyn, exploring what it means to connect to others when you don’t yet know who you are-when you want to be “part of it” but the “it” changes daily. We meet hippie babysitters, mean girls, best friends, former friends, prom dates, girlfriends, sex ed students, and far too many LensCrafters sales associates. These frank, irreverent, and honest comics revel in the uncomfortable, and occasionally cringe-inducing, moments from our early years that end up wiring us as people.

THE BEAT SAYS // Schrag grew up in front of the world using the medium of comics, and she is back here, documenting more of her personal growth. These have always been wonderful and heart wrenching reads, and we expect no different for this one.

WATERSNAKES HC (MR)
(MAGNETIC COLLECTION/LION FORGE)

(Cover by Tony Sandoval)

THE PUBLISHER SAYS // Mila is a solitary teenager ready to put another boring summer vacation behind her until she meets Agnes, an adventurous girl who turns out to be a ghost. And not just a regular ghost, but one carrying the essence of an ancient fallen king and a mouth full of teeth that used to be his guardian warriors. Three-time Eisner Award-nominated writer/artist Tony Sandoval presents a wondrous world of secret places and dreamlike magic hidden in the everyday corners of our sleeping imagination.

THE BEAT SAYS // A lush and beautiful collection filled with awe and wonder. Anything by Tony Sandoval is something of note.

NYR Comics presents the first English translation of his most intimate and accessible book, his graphic memoir of growing up with his beloved brother, Piero. Whether stuck in bed with whooping cough or out exploring in the woods, the two brothers draw together endlessly. They confront Martians, battle octopuses, stage epic battles between medieval castles, and fly high over the earth. Inevitably, they begin to grow apart, and their shared artistic life is replaced by schoolwork, romance, dances, motorcycles, and the struggle to decide what sort of people they want to be. Piero is a delicate, exuberant testament to the joys of childhood, and a bittersweet account of what it means to become an adult – and an artist.”
