moongirl13bWelcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I’m French, that’s why I’m talking funny. Please address your complaints to my “beware dictators, or we will turn the switch off the Eiffel Tower again!” country.

Boy, that’s not a good month for Marvel Now!’s new launches. The illusion behind Champions’ and Dr Strange: Sorcerers Supreme‘s numbers have faded out and one of them woke up with a very bad headache. The expansion of Thor’s, Iron Man’s, Black Panther’s and Dr Strange’s success to other titles is not working out and, worst of all, the Deadpool franchise seems to have reached its limit, if not went over it. All hope of revitalizing the Avengers franchise can be forgotten: the franchise is agonizing with very weak debut launches of Avengers, Avengers 1.1 and Occupy Avengers.

The new daring launches of secondary characters in their own ongoing series has had mixed results. Mosaic and Great Lake Avengers are seemingly doing ok while Solo and Prowler have already failed. Even putting high profile creative teams on these books doesn’t mean good sales, with Infamous Iron Man, Black Widow and Thanos selling less than what should be expected from such comic book stars.

There are so many big events going on at the same time (Civil War II, Inhumans Vs X-Men, Clone Conspiracy) with absolutely no time to catch your breath between them that it can only produce one behavior: forcing hardcore Marvel readers to either give up everything or restrict themselves to one family of titles. And most of those families are not feeling well right now. One day or another, the big two are gonna pay for all these short-term looking behaviors (multi events, constant relaunching, variant cover craziness, over exploitation of trends). Do we see the first signs of new readers getting fed-up? Frankly, I don’t know if we shouldn’t hope they are. Marvel, like Samantha Fox, used to say, “Nothing’s gonna stop me NOW”? Well, you know what, you’re wrong– something will, Marvel!

Reminder: those sales are estimates, sales to comics shops situed in North America. American comics do get sold somewhere else in their original floppy editions. Keep also in mind that it’s not because a copy is sold to a shop that it’s sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are also not taken into account.

Many thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. Also thanks to the Comics Zone shop in Lyon (my city in France!) for its help.

Nobody is giving up on it– it’s quite spectacular.

10/16 Invincible Iron Man #14- 43,888 (- 9.3%) (CV2)

11/16 Invincible Iron Man # 1- 97,713

Every time I hear the name of the new Iron Man, I think about Uncle Scrooge. Why? Because, in France, Riri is a name you never hear except in Uncle Scrooge comics/cartoons. Huey, Dewey and Louie are translated in french as Fifi, Loulou and…Riri.

This is not a very enthusiastic debut, but if it manages to sell at least at the same level that Tony used to, everybody will be quite happy.

6-AMAZING SPIDER-MAN RENEW YOUR VOWS ($5)

11/16 ASM Renew your vows # 1 - 96,111

Welcome back to Spider-Girl, but now named Annie instead of Mattie. She’s younger and both her parents have web powers. Spider-man history has been so magically transformed and retconned that I can’t even say if it’s an alternate reality we are speaking of, or the current state of the Spider-Man title.

 8- VENOM

12/15 Venom Spaceknight #2 - 32,210 (-45.5%)

09/16 Venom Spaceknight #12 - 16,193 (- 7.7%) (CV2)
10/16 Venom Spaceknight #13 - 14,577 (-10.0%)

11/16 Venom # 1 - 90,138

I see no reason for this one to perform that much better except if (1) people can’t imagine Venom whithout him being a bad guy with all the 90’s stereotypes or (2) Loot Crate or a similar offer inflating these numbers. If it’s not (2), those are really good debut numbers– quite surprising.

10-INHUMANS VS X-MEN ($5)

11/16 Inhumans vs X-Men #0 - 84,161

In case you’re wondering if this is it…it’s not. I’m just using Marvel’s sollicitation text: “this issue sets the stage for the upcoming Inhumans Vs X-Men mega-event”. Anybody interested into paying $5 to only have access to the waiting line in front of the entrance door? Apparently, yes.

11- AVENGERS ($5)

11/16 Avengers # 1 - 81,885

Really?! This is supposed to be the relaunch of the big parent Avengers title and it can barely crack 80k? That’s the end result of Marvel so poorly mismanaging one of its biggest franchises. The name Avengers doesn’t mean anything anymore, especially in a title. That’s sad because Mark Waid is probably one of the few writers capable of keeping his writer’s identity on a title like this, applying an artistic touch to mainstream properties.

15- 26- STAR WARS ($5)

A blank month for TPB sales. It keeps falling. It will be interesting to see if the movie release will stop this fall or not. An annual sold at quite a respectable level this month also.

18- UNWORTHY THOR

11/16 Unworthy Thor# 1 - 70,424

That’s quite disapointing. For a comics featuring both the return of the original Thor and of Olivier Coipel on something other then dull mega-events, this seems really low. Could it be below “female” Thor next month?

11/16 Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 – 52,184

Since #2: -43.7%

Did I say last month that “clone” was a magic sales word for Spider-Man titles? Let me rephrase that… that’s the lowest level for the title so far. Meawhile, the Annual, starring Cloak and Dagger (where is their ongoing by the way?) is performing quite well.

28- CLONE CONSPIRACY LTD

10/16 Clone Cnospiracy Ltd #1 - 90,285
11/16 Clone Conspiracy Ltd #2 - 58,921 (-34.7%)

Less people are reading the Spider-Man event of the year than Spider-Man ususal readers. That’s weird. It looks like this one is making old readers leaving the title instead of making new ones buy it.

29- STAR WARS HAN SOLO

06/16 SW Han Solo #1 - 152,596
07/16 SW Han Solo #2 - 83,738 (-45.1%)
08/16 SW Han Solo #3 - 67,816 (-19.0%)
09/16 ---
10/16 SW Han Solo #4 - 63,030 (- 7.0%)
11/16 SW Han Solo #5 - 58,762 (- 6.8%)

Since issue#2 : -29.2%

For a serie starring such a beloved character, Marvel was probably expecting better results. I’m perhaps too old. The young generation is probably not that fond of young sexy dashing Harrisson Ford.

32- GHOST RIDER ($5)

11/16 Ghost Rider# 1 - 57,843

Those numbers are not the love letter Marvel was dreaming of. Robbie Reyes as the new Ghost Rider is quite a hard sell.

33- BLACK PANTHER WORLD OF WAKANDA ($5)

11/16 BP World of Wakanda - 57,073

That’s so weak compared to Black Panther’s debut. So much for the dream of Black Panther as another new hot property capable of supporting several titles.

36- THANOS

11/16 Thanos# 1 - 54,768

Another disapointing debut. It should already fall under 30K with its next issue. That’s Jeff Lemire and Mike Deodato! Imagine what it would have been if it was from unknown newcomers!

38- 45-DEATH OF X LTD

10/16 Death of X Ltd #1 - 75,825
10/16 Death of X Ltd #2 - 59,427 (-21.6%)
11/16 Death of X Ltd #3 - 53,583 (- 9.8%)
11/16 Death of X Ltd #4 - 50,329 (- 6.1%)

Seeing how many big events are taking place at the same time right now, it’s a miracle it’s selling that well.

43-SPIDER-MAN DEADPOOL

01/16 Spider-Man Deadpool #1 - 180,891

SPIDERMAN DEADPOOL TOP VOL.1: 9,738 [+987]
Average +% TPB Sales issues #1-5 : +13.3%

Well, finally, last month numbers were correct. That’s still perfectly ok for this title, performing very well in TPB with another thousand of copies sold of its first volume this month, almost cracking the 10K!

47-244- CHAMPIONS

10/16 Champions #1 - 334,937 [+6,772]
11/16 Champions #2 - 49,733 (-85.2%)

We now have a way much clearer idea of the real impact of this new launch. It should stay around ANAD Avengers numbers, to no one surprise. Issue #1 is back for reorders.

49- CAPTAIN AMERICA STEVE ROGERS

One of the few privileged Marvel serie over 40K. Stable and selling both volumes of its TPB at 1K again this month. A huge hit.

63- AVENGERS 1.1

11/16 Avengers 1.1 - 41,258

OMG, another very weak debut, showing how much in disarray the Avengers franchise is. People are not even interested in good old origins Avengers stories, back to the day when not all of the Marvel universe had been part of an avenger team at one point in his life. Again, top creators, Mark Waid and Barry Kitson and one of the weakest debut so far, barely better than Great Lake Avengers! Nostalgia will not save Marvel, apparently.

65- INFAMOUS IRON MAN

Oh boy, nothing could say “we don’t want to read about you making your own team, you murderer!” better than those awful debut numbers.

11/16 Uncanny X-Men Annual – 35,354

Since issue #2: -33.8%

Like all the others X-Men team books, falling toward the 30K zone. And another victory from Marvel, selling a$5 annual at the exact same level. Boy, with all those annuals, the Inhumans VS X-Men 5$ book, and the double shipping Death of X, Marvel is litterally ripping money from its X-Men fans this month!!

Sales of the first TPB are strong, but it’s if vol.1 will return in the following month that will determine if this one will, at long last, be a strong TPB seller.

93- MOSAIC

10/16 Mosaic #1 - 44,354
11/16 Mosaic #2 - 31,767 (-28.4%)

Defying expectations, Mosaic is performing very well with one of the lowest fall from issue#1. You’ll notice how the mention Inhuman is absent from the title, despite starring an Inhuman. Perhaps that’s the secret to win Marvel’s fans over the Inhumans: selling titles starring the Inhumans whithout branding them Inhumans in front! :p

11/16 All new X-Men Annual - 29,634

Since issue #2 : - 43.6%

30K seems to be the new confort zone for the X-Men team books. The Annual is selling almost the same copies than the ongoing. That’s one victory you can’t take out from Marvel: they did manage to make their floppy readers buy their $5 Annuals almost automatically. That’s no small victory.

10/16 Dr Strange Sorcerers Supreme #1 - 149,710
11/16 Dr Strange Sorcerers Supreme #2 - 29,349 (-80.4%)

When reality wakes you up by slapping you in the face. That’s almost terryfing: Dr Strange is NOT the new character Marvel will be able to use to sell a new family of titles.

100- GREAT LAKE AVENGERS

10/16 Great Lake Avengers #1 - 40,300

Disastrous results for a Deadpool derivated title. TPB sales could save it but will the response be that different from TPB buyers? This will mostly be in the hands of comic book retailers, as they will be the ones directing their Deadpool-interested customers toward Vol.1 of this serie or not.

111- DEADPOOL TOO SOON LTD ($5)

10/16 Deadpool Too Soon Ltd #1 - 36,406
11/16 Deadpool Too Soon Ltd #2 - 24,915 (-31.6%)

With this and the more than mixed results of The Mercs for Money, the message seems pretty clear: Marvel seems to have reach and overplay their Deadpool family card.

May of those 34.6K orders are based on the #1 issue. Feels like sales for #2 might actually be less than sales of the #12 issue of the last “season”. Apologies to Ewing, who is a good writer, but I dropped volume two after having loved volume 1 because I’m no longer rewarding the cynical seasonal approach that Marvel is using to increase speculator sales for new #1 issues. By sales of this new series #1 issue, looks like others are following the same plan. There was absolutely no reason for the relaunch of this series other than speculator-driven greed.

  2. Marvel certainly deserves credit for reaching beyond old fanboy farts like me, especially when it comes to trades, but old fanboy farts like me could have told them that treating everything like a franchise and then treating every franchise like the X-Men in the 90s would inevitably produce the same sales-cratering result.

  3. “11/16 Mosaic #2 – 31,767 (-28.4%)
Defying expectations, Mosaic is performing very well with one of the lowest fall from issue#1.”

    “11/16 Great Lake avengers #2 – 29,273 (-27.4%)
That’s actually pretty good and one of the best fall from issue#1 we have seen since a long time.”

Both MOSAIC and GREAT LAKES AVENGERS had significant unpaid overshipping from Marvel. Without that both of them would be in a more typical circa 50% drop or higher.

  4. Doesn’t seam that any of the new launches are setting charts on fire, at best they’ll sell as well as titles that they are replacing.

  5. I think we are at the point that if Marvel didn’t relaunch, the anniversary numbers (25,50,75,100,etc) would have as big a number if not more than the new number one. I think marvel needs a new strategy here. No idea what the answers os but yearly or bi-yearly relaunches are no longer working.

  6. Not sure Annuals readers and monthly’s are the same, and that can explain why the annuals sell so well nowadays.
Personnally I buy some of the annuals because I still like those characters, the artists could be interesting and the stories are done in one. But there’s no way I’m gonna buy again all those, nearly, 3 bi monthlies + an event, Spider-Men or X-Men titles. Some years ago I was buying the regulars, and not paying much attention to the annuals. Now the opposite.
I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one in that case. Or do I ?

  7. These numbers are terrifying, especially when you look at the trendlines. I would hate to be running a store in this environment.

2017 is going to be a very, very bad year. You’re going to be seeing a lot of GoFundMe’s in the months ahead.

  8. Like David Blot, I’m more likely to pick up the annuals than the main series anymore. I already know I have no interest in the main stories in most of the X-Books right now, but the annuals usually feature characters who’ve been out of play for a while, and new-to-me writers I might end up liking.

  9. How did you get this done so fast this month?! You’re making me look bad!

Anyway, DC and Marvel both have similar problems with line extension, though Marvel seems to have it much worse. Who wants all of those Spider-Man spin-offs? Not very many people, it seems. Too much Deadpool, too much Avengers, too much X-Men. But you gotta get enough titles out there to crowd your competitors off of the racks…

  10. “***Think about the explosion of actual SEQUENTIAL that would flood the market if Marvel and DC just went under tomorrow***”

If Marvel and DC went under tomorrow, they would take the entire Direct Market and 90% of the other publishers with them. If you think creators have it tough now, try getting any traction in a bookstore market where essentially everyone below the level of Stephen King has trouble with sales.

    Mike

  11. If DC and Marvel went under, comics would be ok. There would be some upheaval and the DM would finally die, but everything would be ok. We might even move into a world where people own their creations.

Sadly, both are propped up by huge corporations who keep them running solely for the movie rights.

  12. DC and Marvel are both part of two of the largest media conglomerates in the history of capitalism. If they stopped publishing comics tomorrow they would continue to make billions of dollars on licensing alone. My kid has dozens of marvel games, t-shirts, dvds etc. But has never read a Marvel comic in his life.

The only reason they put out comics like Solo or Mosaic is on the of chance they can leverage that IP somewhere else, like a movie.

  13. “Robbie Reyes as the new Ghost Rider is quite a hard sell.”

Xavier, I often wonder why Marvel hates Dan Ketch so much. He’s the only Ghost Rider who ever sold big amounts, and yet from what I can tell has never had series since his 90’s one.

“There was absolutely no reason for the relaunch of this series other than speculator-driven greed”

Bluebolt, given the series was heading towards cancellation numbers you don’t think they might have done it to try and get more people on board so that the series keeps going?

  14. For a laymen, can anyone suggest why a lot of these longer established titles (As in the ones published at the start of All-New All-Different Marvel last year) dropping so fast from the last month? I thought many of these titles had stablised and would continue to slowly decline at about 1-5% per issue but some of these are books are suddenly doing 15-20% drops this month?

Are retailers descreasing their orders to cover the risk of ordering for re-launch titles?
    or
Do retailers and their readers think that post civil war 2 see no future for these books going forward?

  15. Thanks for all those comments, it bring me pleasure! :)
Yes, the column is early this month, enougth with lateness! (I hope)

David Blot & Suzene: Oh, nice. I had no idea people kept buying Annuals separately from the ongoing. I haven’t bought an Annual from Marvel since a long time. Last time I tried to buy an Annual from them from a serie I did not buy the nongoing, the Annaul was not clearly a separate complete story, only a chapter sold as an annaul. Nice to know it seems to have changed.

Dave: shame is the most important factor into my earliness this moth. seems it worked for you also afer seeing I posted mine earlier :p

If Marvel comics would go bankrupt, total sales would go down but something would come up from its ashes. They would have sell all the right to their characters, that means they would come back, only from another or others publishers.
Marvel is not an essential actor into the devleoppement of comics. Latey, they have been helping with the rise of all-age super-hero comics but they are tons and tons of great publishers besides them who would take advantage of their bankrupt to expand a little more (Dark Horse, Oni, Image, IDW, Graphic India, Aftershock, Boom..;). Frankly, I wouldn’t miss them on the floppy market They have done nothing but damaging it for the last few years.

But yeah, Chris hero is right, because of the movie sh.t, they would never go under, that’s not where the money is. They would only publish things to sell movies, tee-shirts, Tv shows, toys… No need for the license to be opular for it to work.

Ben: I am not a big Ghost Rider fan but I suppose that Marvel is more attracted to the vibe’s of the Ghost rider of the 90’s than the character underneath, I may be wrong but I think that, despite, Ghost Rider 90’s popularity, most people can’t remember the name of Dan Ketch. They remember the name Johnny Blaze and how Ghost Rider was handled artistically in the 90’s. The two don’t really match.

November: Yes, there was a big blow on a lot of Marvel titles last month, that we can see applied on some left this month. I see no particular reason for that, but you have to remember that variant covers programs can disturb one title sales by 10-15% easily. Dave is tracking al those variant covers programs and their specificities way much closer than me. I will open a bottle of champagne the day this silly variant cover crazyness will be over (probably replaced by another trend).

  16. They should experiment with one/two titles per character/team and go back to original numbering.

Comics having a sense of history to go back to and explore was something that excited me when I started buying Spider-Man and X-Men comics back in the day. No new reader is going in to a comic store and believing Avengers #1 is the first ever Avengers comic. Putting ‘new arc’ or ‘new creative team’ on an issue 25 or 50 might be just as successful if they aren’t drowning their own market in new relaunches and new PR buzzwords. Marvel and DC editorial need to calm the PR department down and focus on the long game.

    Yours sincerely,
    Random Internet Commenter

  17. Who are these people buying up no. 1 issues then only half showing up for issue 2? Cant all be speculators can they? Bizarre

  18. @daniel: That’s simple.

Retailers buy more issues so they can quality for variant covers to sell to collectors.

Possibly also some actual readers will buy multiple copies to get all covers they want/like.

  19. @JCG
Thank you for your response. While that makes sense why dont the numbers show up for mid issue variant covers?

  20. I’m disappointed of the sales drop for Ms. Marvel, which has proven to be a great title. At least both it’s digital and TPB sales are good enough to save it from cancellation but it’s obvious Marvel’s rising prices and the terrible CV2 event hurt a lot of titles.

  21. Xavier, I’ve no great fondness for Dan Ketch or Ghost Rider, apart from those few months as an 11/12 year old when he was Ghost Rider and Ghost Rider was the coolest thing ever*, but if they brought Ketch back at least the ending joke of Marvels would make sense again.

*Peaking with Ghost Rider annual #2 by Warren Ellis. Once you’ve read Ellis do it, Mackie on the monthly just didn’t cut it. And then a friends older brother shows you Spawn and it was all over for GR.

  22. @daniel: Mid issues simply does not have as many variants as first issues. Nor do mid issue variants usually require the retailers to raise their orders that much to “qualify” for them.

  23. “Retailers buy more issues so they can quality for variant covers to sell to collectors.”

Isn’t this a huge flashing danger sign, given the change in industry focus (particularly Marvel)? I mean who are collectors except old fanboy farts like me? Are ANY of the readers being chased after with titles like MS. MARVEL or JESSICA JONES or, say, DC’s Young Animal imprint collectors or will they turn into ones?

What happens when we old fanboy farts kick the bucket and nobody cares about variant covers?

    Mike

  24. Marvel is shipping retailers free copies of INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #2, presumably in response to low orders.

    Steve

  25. Marvel published only two super-hero titles with sales over 50K in November 2016 (ignoring mini-series and #1 issues). That’s pretty alarming and a significant change from years past.

No wonder Marvel is propping up their numbers with free overships (e.g., GAMORA #1, STAR LORD #1, ROCKET RACCOON #1, HULK #1, AVENGERS #2, OCCUPY AVENGERS #2, GHOST RIDER #2, AVENGERS #2.1, etc).

    Steve

  26. @MBunge:

Your response to “Variant Cover = Marvel Comics” only proves how fake the comic book market is -like most things in “America”. Disney/Marvel, like most companies -those things that have replaced “America”, make most of their money from Hedge Funds, Off-Shore Banking, Investments from Insurance and Retirement plans in to Real Estate and Futures Trading, and of course Merchandising -Disney/Marvel does not need us/consumers.

Think about the the tiny market of comic book spending -that tiny market that is based on small flimsy little booklets whose stories are incredibly predictable, and how combining all of our spending on Marvel and DC -it would not amount to the profit made from just one of their Off-Shore Hedge Funds and Movies that they make. We do not matter.
