Welcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I’m French, that’s why I’m talking funny. Please address your complaints to my “make our “gratins” great again”” country.

Marvel is having a bad time. Everybody is talking about how their sales are in the toilet, especially compared to DC, who managed to make a jump over Marvel, taking the leadership in sales. It is true that not only most of the sales results of their last two bunches of new titles -or relaunches – are beyond atrocious, but that almost 90% of its catalog has taken hits after hits in the last 4 months.

There is some very scarce titles remaining in the +30K zone, all the rest having fell over the 30K and aiming for the 20K like if it was a purpose. Clearly, Marvel can’t keep their previous cancellation limit (20K) anymore. It seemed to have shifted to 18K but, seing the results of their currents titles, 15K would be a way more accurate limit before cancellation. Many titles are cancelled one after the other, some even have to suffer the supreme shame of having their next issues cancelled after being sollicited.

Marvel will have to find remplacements for all those missing spots in its catalog, which means either another wave of new titles or, like DC, double shipping on their most successful ones, making them bimonthly. Star Wars, Deadpool, Thor, Wolverine and Amazing Spider-man seem to be the only boats staying afloat. Nobody expect the relaunched X-Men titles to perform better than before and we almost already know that the Inhumans relaunch is another failed attempt. Like always, Marvel is more ready to blame the readers than themselves for the failure of their books. Great art, great story, why in heaven’s name don’t everybody empty their pocket and buy their daring products? Well, guess what Marvel, you’re not the only provider of comics here and not everybody is ready to spend their money on a floppy with the cheapest value in the market and annoying market strategies (unending crossovers, double shipping, variant mania, overuse of a character). The saddest part is about the artists working on those poor selling titles original titles: they probably don’t deserve what could be taken as a statement about their artistic skills. That’s not. It’s only the result of a lack of respect from Marvel for their customers and even more, for their readers. I’m not talking choice of artists or content of stories here, just the obvious malign marketing strategies which led to those disastrous results. And the attitude going with it: that’s the customer’s fault. Another doomed childish strategy.

Reminder: those sales are estimates, sales to comics shops situed in North America. American comics do get sold somewhere else in their original floppy edition. Keep also in mind that it’s not because a copy is sold to a shop that it’s sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are not taken into account.

Many thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. Also thanks to the Comics Zone shop in Lyon (my city in France!) for its help.

1- SECRET EMPIRE ($5)

04/17	Secret Empire #1 - 162,718

The following month will tell if this one is a success or not.

3- 16- X-MEN GOLD ($5)

04/17	X-Men Gold #1 - 114,332
04/17	X-Men Gold #2 - 62,283 (-45.5%)

I don’t need to remind you of the scandal perfume around this one. What a way to kill a career all by himself! This world being what it is, you can bet that a large number of people will empty their pockets to buy the original pages increminated. Making extra money for something wicked… Ardian Syaf did turn some of his pages into gold at the end, but not the kind I would like to have in my possession.

4- 24- X-MEN BLUE ($5)

04/17	X-Men Blue # 1 - 108,839
04/17	X-Men Blue # 2 - 54,074 (-50.3%)

That’s (Original) X-Men 4.0, or X-Factor 3.0 or if your prefer All New X-Men 2.0. Of course, there are tons of variants and a $5 starting point. So far, nothing can be tell, -about this one of the Gold book- except that those titles mean absolutly nothing -except referecing to something which also meant nothing in the 90’s. Nostalgia seems the key player here, even nostalgia from the 90’s -is it even allowed?

STAR WARS TPB VOL.2: 11,678
STAR WARS TOP VOL.3: 6,689
STAR WARS TPB VOL.4: 4,907

Now that almost all the rest of the Marvel catalog is falling like a stone and can’t even reach 30K, those numbers look impressive again. I would be Marvel, I would search for another popular property to develop into comics.

9- 38- WEAPON X

04/17	Weapon X # 1 - 68,874
04/17	Weapon X # 2 - 42,471 (-38.3%

My head already hurts just looking at the cover: claws, knifes and guns everywhere, some weapon Omega, Alpha , Zero, X, the list probably goes on forever. Gee, with Greg Land on art, this is like a remix of the 90’s violence and bigboobiness, but with a 2000’s photoshoped twist. Oh, and grinded teeth also! All hope or despair is still allowed, depending on which side of the cliff you stand on.

13- STAR WARS ROGUE ONE ADAPTATION LTD ($5)

04/17	SW Rogue One Ltd #1 - 64,518

Mother of God, I know there are something like 10 variant covers but still…It’s gonna cost $30 in floppy to read the adaptation of a movie you probably already saw. Gee, this is a mad world….

Overshipping and special retailers deals try to hide the fact that’s its falling over the 30K barrier.

Stuart Immonen is the new artist on the title. Marvel has been more greedy than ever with issue #25, priced $10 for now less than 96p. It’s 88p long. And, as you can see, people keep buying it by truckloads so don’t cry your heart out next time, when Marvel will charge you 10$ for a 68p comic.

Enny of the State II concluded in #18 and #19 is the start of a new direction for the title, with a new costume, all in black and white, “à la“ Dark Wolverine/Daken.Even with overship aside, it looks so far that this rejuvenation worked and will perhaps keep the title in the +30K area, which would be considered by the new lowered Marvel standarts quite a success.

23- DARTH MAUL LTD

Those are not Darth Vader numbers but no worries, he’s coming back with a relaunch!

27- BEN REILLY SCARLET SIDER

04/17	Ben Reilly scarlet Spider #1 - 53,240

I always wondered what was the purpose of a hood above a whole-skull-covering mask. There are some quite risky moves on the design of this Scarlet Spider: the hood, the succion-like long fingers and the mouth expressions visible even under the mask.Oh, and the belt. “The most talked about comic of the year” say the sollicitation text? Not sure, but the most daring design of the year, yes! -I’m quite worried about the hood, sorry-

Old Man Logan has clearly become a bimonthly title. You probaby already guessed which issue has the venom variant…With issue #21 starts a kind of modern recap of all the big moments of Wolverine past. It helps the title going back up the golden +40K barreer. Sales of this title are not only very good, they are also steady. And it’s selling like hotcakes in TPB, with all its volumes showing up this month again. What more can you expect?

The Resurrxion of the Inhumans begins. That’s not a typo. The Resurrxion. Of course, tons of variants, which probably means that this new Inhumans serie -have you noticed how Marvel is now avoiding the Inhumans brand name in its Inhumans related titles? – will probably set a new record as a short lived Inhumans serie.

What was it they said? Oh, yeah. “We tried diversity and people did not want it”. Yeah, right. This “totally failing” title -that’s irony- is staying afloat this month (the gain is due to the Resurrxtion variant, Mighty Thor hasn’t been part of the Venom one last month).

Issue#16 has the other part of the Sam Wilson CA connecting cover. Obviously, there is some interest on the current “traitor” storyline. Trolls on the net make it sound like it’s a disaster for Marvel, the numbers tell another story. It’s not an amazing success but it keeps the title afloat in the +30K zone, when almost everybody else is falling over it.

Part 1 and 6 of the Til Death do us… crossover. Tons of variants and of course the venom one is boosting sales (with some overship, no doubt)

57- BLACK PANTHER CREW

04/17	BP Crew #1 - 35,604

Here it is, the return of the ill-fated Crew “black” team and another Black Panther and Cage ongoing title because everybody knows they can sustain 3 ongoing series each at the same time, right? The awesome Butch Guice is on art but surprisingly is signing absolutly none of the 5 covers. Instead we have one of weakest cover ever done by John Cassady as the main one. Yep, that’s 35K with tons of variant and a small (from Marvel standarts) $4 price tag. It was gonna need a miracle to save this one and in fact it has already been cancelled with issue #6. Oh yeah, I forgot, that’s our fault, we readers, we don’t want diversity, right?

Issue #15 had a Ressurxtion variant and #14 none. As you cann see, that’s one quite steady title and one of Marvel very few sucesses. They did manage to establish the character over the years.

A venom variant followed by a Resurrxtion one, business as usual. The 30K are not so far now. Clearly still a success, but unable to sustain a ligne, obviously.

68- NICK FURY

04/17	Nick Fury #1 - 31,683

Oh boy, clearly the world wasn’t waiting in eager for this one seeing those very weak debut numbers despite many variant programs on. Let’s hope this will manage in any way to stay afloat or sell in nice quantities in paperback because 1/ James Robinson is writing it 2/ This young Aco fella seems to improve himself with each assignment. I almost bought a pack of Constantine comics only for him! Here, he seems to clearly pay an homage to Steranko but also going his own way. Let’s hope Marvel will be able to advertise this one effectively, which is almost hoping that coffee will help make you sleep….

Issue 6 is the conclusion of the Kang Wars. Apparently this will be used as a way to magically put the members of the team in the shape Marvel want them to , instead of slowly making them evolve in this direction.Mark Waid being one hell of a writer, there is still hope that this will not look too artificial. Sales should rebond with the debut of the next arc next month.

One Resurrxtion variant on #19 when none was on #18. Even if it fell to a new sales level, that remains one of the few Marvel relaunch success. But come on, another storyline about Daredevil secret identity? Really? Can’t we get over it once and for all?

One variant in program per issue. It’s clearly going down but everybody is doing so bad that this moderate fall looks almost like an accomplishment!

90- GUARDIANS OF GALAXY DREAM ON LTD

04/17	GoG Dream On Ltd#1 - 26,307

A 48p one shot including a reprint for a $4 price tag. The cheapest Marvel book of the month! It’s selling at the same level than the ongoing, great performance!

04/17 Generation X # 1 – 7,143
04/17 X-Factor Mutant Genesis #1 – 6,932

The only things to notice here are that the very old stuff sold way better than anything else and that those Generation X #1 reprint numbers are really not encouraging for the upcoming title.

Since issue #2: -36.9%

After the usual Venom variant bump, it’s going back to standart erosion. It’s still pretty high: the character and its creative team seem to really have struck people’s mind.

101- HULK

12/16 Hulk #1 - 89,810

Seing the numbers, it will probably not stick around very long. Who hasn’t been the Hulk yet? Bruce, done, General Ross, done, Amadeus Cho, done, Rick Jones, done, Jennifer, done. Why not Lockjaw? This could become a kind of Razorback horror comics.

 105- DEADPOOL MERCS FOR MONEY

Since issue #2 : -40.2%

Cleraly, this one was a mistake, by Deadpool sales numbers standards. Even with this crossover asking people buying Spider-Man/Deadpool and Deadpool to buy it to have the complete storyarc, people preferred to pass on it. Half of the people who bought the two deadpool main ongoings will not have the complete story. At the same time, in this day and age of complete decompression, they probably only miss a character driving from A to B during the whole issue…

Another Avengers franchise disaster. Issue#5 had a Resurrxion variant, hence the little bump. I don’t know if we should laught or cry when reading the sollicitation text for issue#4 claming that, hey, they managed to put a complete story in 20 pages! Well, guess what? People used to make that every month in 3 pages less than you, 40 years ago.

Issue #6 has been cancelled after sollicitation. And the serie is cancelled, of course. That’s harsh and remind us of Marverl struggles in the late 90’s early 2000’s when this kind of thing happened several times in a year. For whatever reason, the expectation from Marvel on this one were higher than on others titles, despite the fact that several volumes of Ghost Rider tanked very quickly those last few years.

  1. All the talk about Marvel blaming the fans for not buying into their “Diversity Push”:

IT’S NOT THE DIVERSITY THAT’S RUNNING OFF READERS! IT’S THE OVERALL LOUSY WRITING AND ART FOUND IN MOST OF YOUR TITLES!

Yes, I committed a comment section no-no by typing in all caps, but, one way or another, Marvel needs to realize this. You cannot fix a problem until you find a problem.

    Some other things I’ve noticed:

1)In the “old days” (yep, I’ve been reading these things since the early ’70s), most Marvel characters had a distinct personality. Nowadays everyone’s cut from the same personality cloth, you can read ten Marvel titles starring ten different characters, and it feels like you’re reading about the same person.

2)Exactly HOW many relaunches is Marvel going to give the same character. Look, guys ‘n’ gals, a lot of the characters don’t sell no matter how many shiny new #1s you give ’em.

3)It’s been proven that we don’t need three Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Avengers, or even Deadpool titles. Why don’t we try the “one character/team, one book” mode of publishing. Let’s see how that works out for us.

4)It’s not just changing character identities (Hulk, Iron Man, Hawkeye, ect), but when Marvel actually comes up with a somewhat original idea (Mosiac, which I actually enjoyed), fans are rejecting it as well.

So, what can Marvel do? Perhaps an in-depth, HONEST analysis of themselves is in order. Find out what’s really happening, stop blaming fans who don’t want to waste good money on their (mostly) dreck, and start working towards REAL solutions.

  2. What a mess.

Marvel Legacy will be a disaster if they bring back the legacy characters with these lousy like Ewing, Soule and Spencer and a high price point.

    Aarron can’t write every series.

I’ve seen that unstoppable wasp has not been cancelled yet but who’s going to be reading it come issue 8? Marvel must be really really really praying on the trade doing well

  3. A lot’s been said about Marvel’s woes, both here and elsewhere, but to my mind it mostly boils down to value. People might be willing to fork over $3.99 monthly for a title if they feel they’re getting good value – i.e. an engaging story with a consistent creative team. But not for a title with bloated storylines, endless interrupting event crossovers, relaunches, and inconsistent art. And stunts like $4.99 regular issues and $9.99 “anniversary” issues are just salt in the wound.

I don’t personally have a problem with the so-called “diversity” issue. I don’t really care who’s in the costume as long as the story is good – and some of them have been great (I.e. Miles Morales, Aaron’s Thor). But it does seem to have been too much at once for a segment of the audience. I think it might be more of a “familiarity” issue than a diversity one – too many classic heroes missing or changed beyond recognizability at the same time.

I think Marvel also has a PR problem. I don’t know what goes on inside their offices but to the outside they come off as defensive or argumentative about fan’s complaints. I think they really need to just come out and say “We heard you! We’re going to change X, Y and Z.” – and then follow through. DC did this and the fans rewarded them with sales. I know Marvel has made some efforts (I.e. X-Men relaunch) but to my mind they haven’t gone nearly far enough.

  4. I have a problem with Marvel’s diversity drive, and I’m not buying any of their titles apart from ‘Silver Surfer’. I am not going to be preached at.

  5. I agree, I love Aco’s art (but unfortunately no desire to read a Nick Fury comic) . He also did some great Wonder Woman issues during Azzarello’s run.

They cancelled Ghost Rider #6 which was 13k, but they keep Moon Girl, Hellcat and Mosaic which are all under 10k already? Makes not sense.

Marvel really need to streamline their titles. It just seems like they produce anything, and when it fails wonder why.

Marvel still has a heap of great artists, but many of their writers, unfortunately, are terrible. And I have no desire to be preached to by them. Leave your political agendas for social media (or just your family and friends) and tell good fun stories in your comics.

  6. “What was it they said? Oh, yeah. “We tried diversity and people did not want it”. ”

Actually, it was retailers who said that when Marvel asked for their opinion.

  7. I’m not surprised that some of the 90’s issues of the $1 X-Men reprints are low. A lot of stores would probably have the issues in 50c bins. Giant-sized X-Men fetches a high price so a $1 edition for those who simply want to read it (instead of it being in a collection) is an appealing idea.

  8. >Many titles are cancelled…Marvel will have to find replacements…

That’s part of the problem; Marvel is publishing too many titles and definitely should *not* find replacements for titles like OCCUPY AVENGERS, WORLD OF WAKANDA, and ELEKTRA. (Instead, they should hire better writers; design sellable covers; fix their dark, monochromatic coloring; and upgrade their cover stock.)

    Steve

  9. I don’t see Marvel’s return to legacy numbering as being successful, mainly because it seems like they are treating it as a gimmick. Neither “Venom” nor “Ultimates” are titles that have a “legacy” numbering to return to. They both started as a series of mini-series before they finally became ongoings. Yet, for some strange reason, these were the first two series to get renumbered. Weird.

Besides, if Marvel editorial department *really* wanted to get back to Marvel’s roots, they could have hired writers and artists who could do exactly that. Instead, they chose to go in the exact opposite direction and it has gotten them badly.

  10. Hi everyone, my name is Doug and I am a Marvel Zombie.
    That being said, here are the titles I currently buy from Marvel;
    The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl
    Luke Cage
    Iron Fist
The All New Guardians of the Galaxy
    Uncanny Avengers
    Nick Fury
    Hulk
    The Infamous Iron Man
    Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur
    Generation X
    Black Bolt
    USAvengers
    Black Panther and the Crew
I know that some of these will be cancelled. Black Panther and The Crew already announced it was done with issue 6. I accept that. I do wish they would just call them mini series like they did back in the day. Then, if the sales warrant it, they can extend it. I had that happen with two independent books; Jonesy and Kong of Skull Island both got huge extensions.
Some of these books are magnificent. I think Uncanny Avengers is one of the best Avenger books we have had in a very long time. Infamous Iron Man is just fascinating and, I was ready to give up on Hulk and told myself it had six issues to make me keep it. It pulled that off in issue 6.
I think Marvel has some great books out there, but there is so much that they get wrong with events and messing with their core heroes. DC figured that out with Rebirth and has given us some excellent books. Maybe Marvel will do the same. Who knows? I’ll still buy the books I buy.

  11. “Where would Marvel be right now without Bendis?”, I wonder.

I mean, this one man is writing:

    Guardians of the Galaxy
    Infamous Iron Man
    Invincible Iron Man
    Jessica Jones
    Spider-Man

On the one hand, he’s leaving Guardians, but on the other hand, he’s picking up The Defenders. That’s five monthly books from a single big name! (Not to mention Civil War II not long ago…)

Thus, again: where would Marvel be right now without Bendis?

  12. PS: 32,000 copies on Nick Fury #1 is heartbreaking. That issue was the single best book I read all month, in large part due to ACO’s spectacular pencils. Fingers and toes crossed for the title!

  13. On the other hand, Hulk #6 was my dropping off point (and I usually buy the books with Jen Walters in them as a character). The payoff was just not worth it. I should have waited to read it in trade from my library and I still wouldn’t have enjoyed it, probably.

$3.99 is really too expensive for these “tryout-level” books.

  14. The big turning point for Marvel for me is when they went to $3.99 per title, plus how arrogant they were in responding to concerns about the higher prices. And there just aren’t many titles they are publishing now that appeal to me. The only title I’m getting and really enjoying now is Gwenpool. I’m also still buying Mighty Captain Marvel due to my love of the Carol Danvers character (all the way back to Ms. Marvel #1 in the 70’s.). But that has been almost painful, as none of her recent series have really appealed to me, and I’m considering dropping it as well. I’m much more drawn to the collections of older series than anything currently published.

  15. Sadly, I have to agree. The older collections are much more appealing than (with few exceptions) what Marvel has been publishing for the last 10 years. My feeling is they wanted and tried to be too hip and PC with their books and as a result lost their core readership, including me. I used to read about 20 Marvel titles per month. Now down to 4 or 5, and dropping.

  16. All you old timers who complain you can’t read this new “hip” and “PC” Marvel do realize what you are saying is you only want to read stories about white men because you can’t empathize with a non-white, cis het male protagonist, right?

    Such precious snowflakes.

  17. Ouch. Such an overreaction. If any poster made such a comment, their post would be deleted and the thread closed.

    Good riddance.

  18. Heidi, you are making a mistake by trying to saddle me with your stereo types and presuming you know what I am about. “Hip and PC” simply as concepts alone translate into good. comics What I am saying is that Marvel has gone that route (among their other shortcomings) at the expense of telling a good story and conveying it with solid art. I’d be happy to have a more detailed discussion about this is you are interested in having your views challenged instead of affirmed..

  19. Living tribunal: I agree with that! But you chose the words “hip and pc” not the words “dull and badly drawn” or “poorly paced” or whatever legit criticisms you could level against these stories.

  20. I don’t mind the Black Panther, Storm, Luke Cage being black, Jimmy Woo or Amadeus Cho being Asian, etc. but when they replace 50 year old established superheroes with new minority versions, or ret-con established heroes as having different “sexual identities” than they have always had, then yes, I mind that. If they want to introduce more diversity, fine, but do it by introducing new cool characters, not by re-imagining already existing characters.

I can anticipate the objection that Marvel has always had their existing characters “replaced’ at times. This is true, but now they are doing it wholesale rather than it being a rare, temporary event.

Truth be told, Marvel has always advanced the progressive cause to some extent, but they used to be more subtle and gentle about it, and in the context of a good story. Now it seems, half the time, that the story is nothing more than a poor vehicle for the political views to be conveyed.

This last point is the main point. Personally, I am neither liberal or conservative – my political views don’t really fit into these categories – and I’m willing to put up with a bunch of propaganda IF a good story is being told, but Marvel has mostly forgotten how to do that, and for the amount they are charging, the story better be good!!

Instead, the only way they can come up with ideas is to have nearly every plotline involve the possible end of the world, and creating a new universe with new parameters every couple years.

  21. But absolutly none of those 50 year old heroes has been replaced. Malr tHor is still there, Ms Marvel is still there with the name Captain Marvel, male Hulk is there, Captain Americ ais there, tony Stark wil come back for sure, Peter Parker is still there besides Miles Morales.
And eh, newsflash: sexuality habits changes during your life. You can “be” heterosexual and becomes slowly bi or gay. You can sexually attracted by people your age, then younger, then older. People well build, then people skinny…. Life is change, mostly.
By saying you do not want your characters “tainted” by a change, you are implying that this change is not good or right. Perhaps that’s not what’s on your mind, but that’s the message it send.
Like parents saying “‘I’m okay with gay people” and than turning crazy on their kid when HE announces he is gay. Soooo many exemples of that.

  22. Heidi, I’m not sure if you’re including me in your comment, since I did mention that the two characters I’m buying are Gwenpool and Captain Marvel, but I thought your post was both an overreaction and extremely hostile.

  23. My post is in reaction to literally MONTHS of comments here (many deleted and posters banned) airing exactly the same complaints about PC and SJW and retcon and blah blah blah. Some in socially acceptable terms some in blatantly racist and misogynist terms.

If the rant fits, own it.

  24. I think the “old timers” have a point. As this column shows, Marvel’s sales have been in freefall, so clearly they’re doing something wrong. And they’re been making a big deal about the original characters coming back. (And yes, I know they’re not all gone completely.)
Whatever the actual reason – and I doubt it’s racism/sexism in most cases – it really doesn’t look like the replacements have gone over well.

  25. I’ll be interested to see how many of these legacy characters are actually returning full-time, as opposed to just as part of this event. It seems odd to bring back Captain Mar-Vell full-time after all these years (as much as I like him, particularly during the Starlin run) just as the Carol Danvers Captain Marvel is gearing up for her first movie.

  26. Yeah, I definately can’t see Mar-Vell being back full-time. I don’t think Carol as Captain Marvel is one of the “replacements” people have an issue with, though – after all, Mar-Vell’s been dead for 30-something years.

  27. All you old timers who complain you can’t read this new “hip” and “PC” Marvel do realize what you are saying is you only want to read stories about white men because you can’t empathize with a non-white, cis het male protagonist, right?

    ===========================================================================================

Gee, Heidi, love painting with that old broad brush, don’t you?

Not all “old timers” are against diversity. We just don’t want existing characters changed wholesale. Create new ones—original ones. Personally, I loved Marvel’s latest attempt, Mosiac. One of the best Marvel titles in a while. As I said In my earlier post, most Marvel titles, in my opinion, suffer from the worst sin a comic can commit: lousy writing and worse art.

Amazingly (I’ve been reading these things since the mid-70s), one of Marvel’s best right now is Champions. Hey, but wait, that book contains “legacy characters”. Guess not all us “old timers” are against diversity—to a point. As I said earlier, we’d just like to see NEW characters, don’t run roughshod over the old ones.

One last thing, Heidi. Please don’t blame us for Marvel’s apparent laziness. Making broad accusations makes you no better than those who actually are guilty.

  28. Heidi runs this site? What a rude and condescending person to people who visit her page. Much the same way Marvel treat their customers online. Heidi and Marvel creators should take a leaf out of DCs book and not resort to this kind of behaviour.

  29. I don’t read many new Marvel comics; are their writers routinely inserting PC and SJW content? (I know a few are active on Twitter and have liberal views.) I recently read an interview (with Bendis, I believe) where he implied the theme of the original 1970’s PUNISHER stories was taking action against conservatives in the aftermath of Watergate. That struck me as reading something into the books that wasn’t really there, but I’ll admit I have not looked at those stories in decades and that could be a reasonable interpretation.

Regarding legacy characters: many long-time comics collectors have emotional attachments to characters due to nostalgia and other factors. They would find a three issue arc where Falcon takes over for Cap a perfectly acceptable diversion; however, rebranding Falcon as Cap (while simultaneously replacing Thor, Hulk, and Iron Man) for an extensive period is emotionally upsetting. Marvel’s diversity push is a reasonable marketing strategy given the country’s demographic and psychographic changes; Marvel’s mistake was underestimating how long-time fans would react. Hopefully, they will be able to “straddle the fence” and create books that appeal to both “old timers” and younger readers.

  30. Perhaps it would be better if the staff of this site expended some energy editing this column for typos, formatting, and basic spelling and grammar (non-native English speaker or not) rather than getting hostile and stereotyping broad swaths of the readership. Just sayin’.

  31. So much for readers who have reading comprehension skills!

As a reminder, I was raised in the dungeons of Usenet and Compuserve and trained in mortal combat for constant battle. And If I won…I lived to fight another day. And another.

I know your tricks and trolls and rickrolls. I stand for equality, fraternity and liberty. You’re either with us or against us.

  32. Heidi, I think you’re being more offensive and antagonistic than anyone else on this thread. It is possible for someone to prefer Steve Rogers instead of Sam Wilson as Captain America without being a Bigot, and it’s possible for someone to prefer the original Thor instead of Jane Foster as Thor without being Sexist. I hope you’d agree with that.

  33. MIke Steele, absolutely, except these objections are couched in terms of being too pc and SJWs and so on, it’s hard not to see that as a direct objection to progressive representation.

Also in case anyone isn’t actually reading what I’m saying, in the past, oh say , seven months have seen a radical increase in actual racist and trolling comments here and everywhere. I remove the worst ones quickly so you may not see them but I do.

Since this thread has gone way off the rails I’ll give myself the last word and paraphrase a quote I found once but never found again. If, say, the supreme court was made up of nine black men people would say it had a bias. If it was made up of nine gay Latinx women, you’d say it had a bias. But when it’s made u of nine middle aged white men, it’s just normal.

    Our government in action!
