Welcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I’m french, that’s why I’m talking funny. Please adress your complaints to my “we just love having corrupted president candidates” country.

First, an apology. I’m late, very late. So late that, as I was finishing the January column, I realized the February numbers were already available. So I decided to put both in one column. You deserve an explanation for my lateness. As some of you may now, I’m am editor in chief of one of the longest printed fanzine about comics, called Scarce, published since 1982! We will soon release two issues at the same time, focusing on Legion of Super-Heroes: that’s 136 pages to fill about one of the most daring franchise at Marvel/DC. The deadline is very tight. It’s taking all my time. So, please excuse me for my lateness. As a reward, here is the double wraparound cover done by new fresh talent Maxime Garbarini for those two issues. Maxime just had its first comcis published last year, issue#6 of the Joe Glass’ The Pride. He did an amazing job, didn’t he?

Back to our Marvel numbers. In January and February, Marvel overshipped its titles at around +10% . that means stores received more copies than ordered: free copies to put on the shelves to sell, cover price being 100% profit -(minus the shipping cost opf course). It seems clear looking at the February numbers that not all of the February products overshipped. It’s also clear that the overshipping was at a level way more important than +10% for some titles. The reason is that, for titles that are ordered in very few quantities by stores, this +10% overshipping can become a +100% overshipping. Only one copy ordered= one free copy received. If you ordered less than 10 copies of a title, you would still receive one free copy.

Now, which titles would be ordered by less than 10 copies, or even only at a one copy level? Well, a lot of the new launches on C list or new characters. The one coming to mind is Mosaic, not at all the amazing success I sold you in this column in the last two months. What’s Marvel startegy in this? First, the most obvious one, printing at a certain level of quantity is sometimes as expensive than printing less copies. But IO would bet that Marvel has amazing low printing costs, no matter what. A second mean reason would be to trick people into believing a title is selling well: that’s simply too stupid to be true, and the illusion would fade away very quickly. Some of you probably thought about that, be frank! :p No, the main real reason to overship is to have some of your new daring launches on the racks. Retailers are litteraly overflowed with new #1s. On new series starring for the first time what were C-list characters, with a creative team unknown to most fans, it can be very difficult for retailers to take the risk to have it on the shelves, or only in the hope that those crazy people completely obsessed by variant covers would pick up a copy. With this strategy, Marvel forces the shops to have some copies on the shelves, and not only pre-ordered by customers copies that will never be available for other customers. Seeing the numbers after the overshipping, it’s not working. Many of those difficult new launches are already below 10,000, even sometimes close to 5,000, which is mind-blowing.

Reminder: those sales are estimates, sales to comics shops situed in North America. American comics do get sold somewhere else in their original floppy edition. Keep also in mind that it’s not because a copy is sold to a shop that it’s sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are not taken into account.

Many thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. Also thanks to the Comics Zone shop in Lyon (my city in France!) for its help.

MS MARVEL TPB VOL.6: 3,500

No floppy issue of Ms Marvel this month but her first TPB is still selling, cracking 45K only trought Diamond. It’s more difficult to make people pick up the remainign volumes after that.

1- DARTH MAUL ($5)

02/17 Darth Maul #1 - 105,177

That’s a weak debut for a Star Wars ongoing. I was expecting more crazyness from retailers on this one. Well, it seems that not everybody can be Darth Vader, soon coming back with a relaunch, as I predicted it months ago!

Back to business as usual. TPB Vol. 4 went out and is doing perfectly OK, even if with a weaker first month than the previous volumes, which is perfectly normal. Vol. 1 is still selling nice quantities every month.

Since #2: -44.3%

If we count that +10% redorders are indeed part of those results, that’s quite disapointing that Amazing is reaching is lowest point during what is supposed to be a big event. The surge for issue #23 is probably to Gwen Stacy coming back.1113

16- 20--IVX

11/16 Inhumans vs X-Men #0 - 84,161
12/16 Inhumans vs X-Men #1 - 167,703 (+99.3%)

02/17 Inhumans vs X-Men #5 - 53,348 (- 6.4%)

Those numbers are a little steep.

24- CLONE CONSPIRACY LTD

10/16 Clone Conspiracy Ltd #1 - 90,285
11/16 Clone Conspiracy Ltd #2 - 58,921 (-34.7%)
12/16 Clone Conspiracy Ltd #3 - 56,117 (- 3.7%)
01/17 Clone Conspiracy Ltd #4 - 54,947 (- 2.1%)
02/17 Clone Conspiracy Ltd #5 - 48,780 (-11.2%)

Issue #5, according to the sollicitations, was supposed to be THE issue Spider-fans will talk about for years to come. Apparently, this plan failed.

28- UNWORTHY THOR

11/16 Unworthy Thor# 1 - 70,424
12/16 Unworthy Thor# 2 - 50,584 (-28.1%)
01/17 Unworthy Thor #3 - 52,938 (+ 4.7%)
02/17 Unworthy Thor #4 - 46,006 (-13.1%)

As always, Olivier Coipel delivers an amazing redesign. I would hire him as an artistic director in a jiff to pump up some tired struglling super-heros franchises like the Red Circle or Gold Key superheroes.

30- ELEKTRA

02/17 Elektra #1 - 44,310

Elektra discovered that all her troubles to keep an ongoing title alive actually came from her bad breath. So now she’s hiding her mouth. With a weak debut like that, inflated by overshipping, the following months should not be easy for her.

33-STAR WARS DOCTOR APHRA LTD

12/16 SW Dr Aphra Ltd #1 of - 99,067
12/16 SW Dr Aphra Ltd #2 of - 61,417 (-38.0%)

02/17 SW Dr Aphra Ltd #4 of - 43,475 (-10.5%)

Slowing down. At least, that’s it.

34- 49- MONSTER UNLEASHED LTD ($5)

01/17 Monsters Unleashed Ltd #1 - 74,107
02/17 Monsters Unleashed Ltd #2 - 43,355 (-41.5%)
02/17 Monsters Unleashed Ltd #3 - 38,205 (-11.9%)

This event seems quite attracting, seemingly not having to relay on convulated storylines and out-of-character behavior to explain its leitmotiv. It’s just a good old invasion of Godzilla-like monsters, taken from the good old days of Marvel/Timely. As good an occasion than another to remind you that Season 3 of Kajumax, the chef d’oeuvre from Zander Cannon at Oni, is in the works.

40- STAR WARS POE DAMERON

04/16- SW Poe Dameron #1 - 175,322
05/16 SW Poe Dameron #2 - 68,922 (-60.7%)

07/16 SW Poe Dameron #4 - 57,712 (- 5.2%)
08/16 SW Poe Dameron #5 - 52,281 (- 9.4%)
09/16 SW Poe Dameron #6 - 50,275 (- 3.8%)
10/16 SW Poe Dameron #7 - 47,878 (- 4.7%)
11/16 SW Poe Dameron #8 - 43,034 (- 10.1%)
12/16	SW Poe Dameron #9 - 38,839 (- 9.7%)
01/17 SW Poe Dameron #10 - 40,091 (+3.2%)
02/17 SW Poe Dameron #11 - 40,235 (+0.4%)

Since issue #2: -41.6%
POE DAMERON TPB VOL.1: 4,621 [+365]
Average +% from issue #1-6 : +7.6%

With numbers like that, even if the Star Wars titles are not supposed to be part of Marvel current overshipping strategy, the doubt arise. Meanwhile, the first TPB did reappear on its second month of release, but not the third one.

02/17 Mighty Thor #16- 40,175 (-14.6%)

Since issue #2: -42.9%

Issue #15 was the debut of a new arc, about a war beetween Asgard and the Shiar. Taken into account the +10% overshipping, the serie is steady, not gaining any new readers in floppy format.

No real lessons to be learned here. I would have expected retailers to have ordered more Old Man Logan than anything else because of the movie, but apparently, the priority was given to the good old reprint of Incredible Hulk 181. Certainly not the kind of comics I would recommand to someone new entering my store and wanting a Logan-related cheap product. Did Marvel gave away some of those?

  1. That’s a shame about Unstoppable Wasp; it’s a fantastic series so far. OTOH it’s clearly being aimed at getting the trade collections into Scholastic, so like other series (Squirrel Girl, Moon Girl) its sales of individual issues in the Direct Market will have little bearing on its continued existence.

  2. Maybe if they didn’t publish so many books? Like SOLO? Or all of the Guardian of the Galaxy character books. I mean, they need to shore up their titles. Shocking to see how badly their main titles are doing.

  3. I am shocked that so many titles are doing so badly. What are they doing that has driven so many reader away?

  4. It is really shocking to see how bad Marvel is doing and how we really don’t know how bad they are doing because of the overshipping.

    I mean, wow.

  5. I think Marvel needs to seriously trim their line and concentrate on putting out fewer, stronger books. There is so much “noise” in their line. I used to get excited to read their solicitations – now I just find it exhausting. They bloat every one of their franchises to the point where nothing feels special. Does Avengers really need 4+ titles (regular, Uncanny, US, Ultimates, etc)? How about just one really strong Avengers book that feels central to the MU. You don’t even get a chance to miss characters anymore because it feels like every one is appearing every month in some book somewhere. And the ridiculous prices ($4.99? Really?) are just added incentive to stay away.

  6. 1 or 2 X-Men books. 1 Avengers title. 1 Guardians title. 1 Spider-Man title. 1 Deadpool title.

Unify and simplify, Marvel. If there’s no ‘main’ title, then nothing really counts and you lose the event nerds and collectors as well as confusing the hell out of casual and new readers. I realise you think you’re leaving money on the table but in the long run this current method dilutes each brand to the point that all of them are meaningless.

  7. I don’t mind a plethora of badly performing titles – all it’s hurting is their bottom line. I just wish there were more titles they were doing well. It’d be great to read X-Men, but they’re mostly unreadable. Same for GotG. Thor’s starting to become terrible. Can you believe they’re launching a third Thor title, All-New Ultimate Thor? !@#%!

  8. Regarding Foolkiller : “Someone was follish enough to believe in this.”

Well someone was also smart enough to believe in one of the funniest and clever Marvel book recently.
Ditto for the Bullseye mini so far.

But yeah this is the sales column, I know, quality is not the concern.

  9. RE: Black Widow #10-11

Xavier writes: “Managing to hover above the cancellation zone.”

Sadly, no: Black Widow #12 — the final issue — came out today.

  10. “But yeah this is the sales column, I know, quality is not the concern.”

If your favorite book doesn’t sell, you might want to consider that it does say something about the quality of the work.

Having a small audience doesn’t always mean something sucks. The “Evil Dead” films have never been more than niche horror flicks but it’s still one of the greatest trilogies in movie history. But just because something strongly appeals to a small audience, it doesn’t necessarily make it superior to something that engages a bigger, more casual group of readers/viewers/listeners.

  11. Saw this coming for awhile. Prices too high, gimmicky market manipulation tactics, no-name talent on most of the books and too many books to care about any of it.

All of this equals diminishing returns…not a matter of “if” but “when”. Looks like “when” is alarmingly close to “now”.

I can’t believe it’s been almost 13 years since I bought Marvel floppies on the regular. Also can’t see a way back even if Marvel did correct some things.

  12. Paging Grant Morrison – What do you want to write? How much money do you want?
Paging Warren Ellis – what do you want to write? How much money do you want?
Paging Josh Whedon – what do you want to write? How much money do you want?
Paging Alan Moore – please? We will worship a snake god for you. Just write something!

  13. Step one of Marvel’s recovery plan should be implementing a “back to the basics” approach of a shared universe featuring classic versions of their major characters.

  14. I remember when Annihilation event happened and it was a moderate hit Marvel rolled out Nova ongoing. A year or so later they did Conquest, it was smaller hit than Annihilation, but still worked and Nova’s sales were somewhat stable so they rolled out another ongoing – GoTG. They did couple more events, but didn’t launch anything new out of them probably due to seeing that market won’t support more of these titles. Then they axed whole thing and eventually relaunched both Nova and GoTG with higher profile creative teams.

I wish Marvel did more of such slow burn. Now they just keep throwing out multiple spin-offs whenever they feel like there is some potential money that they are leaving on the table. Why release 3 Daredevil spin-offs in same month when main title isn’t doing that great? It is going to tank sales for all 4 titles. Why every GoTG memeber keeps getting new books when market clearly shows that there isn’t demand for them? Because movie is coming up and maybe, maybe, someone will pick up some trade collections. Comic book market where comics aren’t made for comic book readers.

  15. Wow. These numbers are terrible… The over shipping was clearly an attempt to boost flagging sales.

It really does seem like it’s time for a Marvel Implosion, doesn’t it?

  16. Wow, I knew the sales were bad but I had no idea they’d gotten this bad. That’s insane.
Marvel really needs to trim the fat and go back to basics, I think.

  17. They need to bring in people who know how to write and draw the characters. The “Do What You Like With Our Characters” Method hasn’t worked. Classic Marvel stories mean something to older fans not because of what happened but how the reader cared about what happened to the characters. One of my main problems before I quit reading Marvel last may was that quippy dialogue is not characterization and not every writer needs to write like Brian Michael Bendis.

  18. Let’s get to the root of the problem. Axel Alonso needs to go. Maybe even Tom Brevoort. Not sure how involved Quesada is these days.

  19. Dire sales.

Those Secret Empire run up books (Captain America, Falcon, Thunderbolts, Uncanny Avengers are bad sign going into Secret Empire given its controversial nature. Nevertheless, I reckon the event will sadly sell as well as Civil War 2, Axis etc

but i can see those guardians solo books selling well as trades when the movie comes out.

If the issue is that Young female audience is only buying trade, why even bother selling floppy?

  20. “If the issue is that Young female audience is only buying trade, why even bother selling floppy?”

Because sales of ~15K would at least be sufficient to break even on creative costs.

  21. Sad to see such bad sales numbers on Mosiac. One of the few original concepts Marvel’s done in quite some time.

Agree with the person who praised Bullseye and Foolkiller. The Steve Gerber Foolkiller from the early ’90s was a classic, and am glad this reboot was totally different instead of revisiting the past series. Let them both stand on their own merits.

Occupy Avengers is a good book, IMO, however it should be called Hawkeye instead. Get rid of that garbage masquerading as a “Hawkeye” title with Kate whats-er-name.

Adding my voice to the many who think Marvel should trim their line. One character, one book. Marvel is resembling Atlas of the 1950s where they flooded the market with whatever they thought would sell.

A good solution is this: Remember when DC’s New 52 started? DC did 52 comics every month. Instead of having to do a certain number like that, Marvel should set a “maximum limit” on their # of titles per month. Whatever the number, can’t go over that, but can go under. Kind of keep the line under control. The old “If you can’t get bigger, get better” mindset.

One more thing that bugs me, tho probably not anyone else: I miss a “trade dress” on Marvel covers. I don’t know it it matters to anyone, but to me, it gives the line a uniform look, but hey, that’s just me.

  22. Methinks they need to “reset” management. Avengers under 40k?! Wow! Heads must roll. As others have mentioned above, go back to basics! Bring back the original characters, in one comic (i.e. not two Dr. Strange comics, not a crapload of Avengers comics, etc.)

As a sign that they are giving up their idiocy of continuous reboots, go back to the original numbering. i.e. Uncanny X-Men and Avengers at #650 or something like that.

Marvel is being abandoned in droves – will they learn their lesson?

  23. I know that the prevailing thought is for Marvel to go “back to basics” with its character. And that makes a lot of sense – which is exactly why I think they won’t do it. Given a choice between simplifying the line or grabbing a quick headline, Marvel will take the headline every time. Plus, I doubt they the current group of editors and writers are interested in telling the same kind of action/adventure stories we all grew up reading.

  24. Bob:

Precisely why the current management needs to go. They are more interested in generating (false) hype and pursuing marketing campaigns over hiring great writers and artists (who can write/draw more than five or six issues in a row) to tell great stories. I the “old” day each book was distinct. Not everyone was an Avenger or an X-Man. Individual titles had subplots and ongoing supporting casts. You did not have to buy multiple titles to get an entire storyline. Books stood out on their own. Obviously we live in different times, with different marketing realities., but the approach of taking your traditional characters off the board and replacing them with new ones does not seem to be working. To sum it up in MHO, Marvel is just throwing s__t on a wall to see what will stick. They have no comprehensive plan for making their books a compelling purchase. Their sole focus on line wide events/crossovers and new number 1 issues is finally huring them where it counts – sales.

  25. “the approach of taking your traditional characters off the board and replacing them with new ones does not seem to be working.”

This is irrelevant. Sales on Deadpool are down. Sales on the X-books are down. Sales on all DC books are down. It’s the market, stupid.

  26. “This is irrelevant. Sales on Deadpool are down. Sales on the X-books are down. Sales on all DC books are down. It’s the market, stupid.”

The X-books have been in steady decline creatively for more than ten years, so I am not surprised sales are bad. Deadpool is way overexposed, just as Wolverine was and they killed him off.

  27. “The X-books have been in steady decline creatively for more than ten years, so I am not surprised sales are bad. Deadpool is way overexposed, just as Wolverine was and they killed him off.”

Yes, notice how you have an excuse for falling sales on every franchise because sales are falling on every franchise;. It’s the market, stupid.

  28. “Yes, notice how you have an excuse for falling sales on every franchise because sales are falling on every franchise;. It’s the market, stupid.”

Ok, I get it. I say up. You say down. I say black. You say white.

  29. I’m not interested in anything marvel anymore. What i am interested in is a link to pick up your LoSH fanzine.

  30. Perhaps if Marvel didn’t churn out so many third rate titles people would take a chance on the minor characters. They also need to drop the dodgy ‘diversity’ claptrap.

  31. “featuring classic versions of their major characters”

You mean the WHITE old man characters like Tony Stark and Bruce Banner?

  32. “You mean the WHITE old man characters like Tony Stark and Bruce Banner?”

By “White old man” characters I assume you mean those of us that supported Marvel in the ’60’s and ’70’s. Please be aware that Black Panther, Luke Cageand are Shang Chi are part of that “WHITE old man” legacy you seen to have a problem with..

  33. Wow. Just wow. I just read Champions #5 and America #1. There must be a prize offered somewhere for most leftist ideology crammed into one comic book, and Marvel is going hard after that prize.

  34. First off, Targy, take some classes on having a respectful discussion. Secondly, people are trying to be nice about all this and I’ll catch hate for coming right out and saying it: the Marvel SJW experiment has failed. Trying to push Mockingbird as some kind of feminist icon, trying to push a whole “girl power” trend with everyone from Carol Danvers to Patsy Walker, pushing a “crooked justice system” in Sam Wilson’s title while making the ultimate good guy, Steve Rogers, into the ultimate traitor. Readers are sick of it. People used to read comics for adventure ,for good guy versus bad guy, for the colorful battles and action. Not to be hit over the head with political statements and cutesy dialogue. Marvel really does need to trim the line and get back to telling the stories a majority of their audience want to read.

  35. Marvel have two big problems right now, and the names of those problems are Axel Alonso and Joe Quesada, it doesn’t matter what writer you put in a cómic, hell you could put Brian K Vaughan to write Guardians of the Galaxy and it still going to be a crappy story not because Brian K Vaughan is a bad writer, it’s going to be a bad story because the editors do not let their writers work, they have a personal idea of how the characters have to behave, Peter Parker behaves like an idiot in front of females characters not because Dan Slott is a bad writter (I have mostly enjoyed his stories in Amazing Spider-Man and Silver Surfer), he behaves that way because Joe Quesada says it have to be that way -_- you could call Alan Moore to Write The Amazing Spider-Man and Peter Parker would still be away from Mary Jane, the problems mostly are not the writers, the problems as I said before are Axel Alonso and Joe Quesada…

  36. Do you proofread these columns before they’re posted? This is full of typos, which makes your site look unprofessional… which exacerbates the problem of your writer missing his deadline for last month,
