343722_20150910072837_largeGreetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.

September 2015 was the first time since the start of the New 52 in September 2011 that DC didn’t have some sort of promotional stunt for the DCU. In 2012 it was #0 issues; in 2013 it was the Forever Evil issues with 3D covers and decimal numberings; in 2014 is was the return of 3D covers with the Futures End one-shots. This year it was just business as usual, so don’t read too much into the seemingly poor one- and two-year percentage comparisons.

Sales were down for most DCU titles in September compared to August, in most cases due to last month’s Bombshell freely-orderable variants (f.o.v.s) being a good deal more ordered than this month’s Green Lantern 75th Anniversary covers. Also, most of the new DCYou titles that were launched in June either switched from incentive variants to freely-orderable variants (in which case their apparent sales stayed level) or they lost their variants all together (in which case their sales dropped). I’ve tried to make note below of whatever variant cover shenanigans were going on with each particular title (though I may have missed something; feel free to scold me in the comments below). See last month’s column for my rant on the state of variant covers…

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

In a weak comics month, Batman continues to be DC’s best-selling comic, coming in at #3 on the Diamond chart trailing two Star Wars comics. The loss of the Bombshells cover means a drop of over 10K in sales. This was also a fill-in of sorts, a flashback with Capullo replaced on art by Jock. But c’mon man: Jock drawing Batman? I’m so there!

7 - BATMAN ANNUAL ($4.99)
04/2012: Batman Annual #1 -- 101,394 [105,754]
07/2013: Batman Annual #2 -- 101,726 (- 3.8%)
12/2014: Batman Annual #3 -- 81,396 (- 20.0%)
07/2015: Batman Annual #4 -- 80,684 (- 0.9%)
-----------------
2 years : - 20.7%

As with most Annuals the Batman Annual comes in a good deal lower than the main book. But in Batman’s case that different of over 33K is still good enough to make it DC’s second best selling title for September.

8 - JUSTICE LEAGUE ($3.99)

DC’s third top ten book for September, and it’s top-selling $3.99 title.

(Justice League of America was late and slipped to October.)

15 - HARLEY QUINN ($3.99)
09/2014: Futures End #1 -- 119,180 (+103.7%)
10/2014: Harley Quinn #11 -- 68,557 (- 42.5%)

-----------------
6 months: - 15.0%
1 year : - 52.3%

From where I sit, the biggest long-term problem that DC has is in the 20K gap between Justice League and Harley Quinn. They just cannot seem to develop books that sell in that area.

16 - DETECTIVE COMICS ($3.99)

The only title with a freely-orderable variant that shows an increase over its Bombshell month, for what reason I cannot fathom. A new creative team takes over in October.

17 - HARLEY QUINN ROAD TRIP SPECIAL #1 ($5.99)
07/2014: Harley Quinn Comic Con #1 -- 64,978
12/2014: Harley Quinn Holiday Sp #1 -- 63,465 (- 2.3%)

09/2015: Harley Quinn Road Trip #1 -- 51,135 (- 25.5%)

Not sure why the rose has fallen off somewhat on Harley Quinn over the past few months; maybe over saturation? (c.f. HQ & Power Girl below). Still, over fifty thousand copies of a $6 comic book are nothing to sneeze at.

Returnable, so the numbers are adjusted up by 10% from the estimates. (For why this is done for returnable comics, please see the fine print at the end of this column.)

The final issue of the oft-delayed prequel series is less than half of the debut issue, and the delays no doubt played a role in its decline. But fret not for Sandman: Overture; the hardcover collection comes out in November and it will smash every other thing that DC puts out this year; heck, it’ll probably be DC’s bestselling thing since Sandman: Endless Nights back in 2003.

24 - SUPERMAN ($3.99)

The f.o.v. fluctuations are so strong that they mask what may be actually happening with readership demands. Are readers reacting positively or negatively to the “Truth” storyline in the Superman titles? How can we tell? So if the commentary seems slight this month, it’s because there’s only so many ways that I can say that a title dropped a lot form the Bombshell cover to the Green Lantern cover.

If I were to try to look for a metric that may give us an idea of how well the f.o.v.-sporting titles are doing I’d maybe look at the 6 month comparisons, and by that measure Action is doing pretty good.

39 - DC COMICS BOMBSHELLS (Digital First) ($3.99)
08/2015: Bombshells #1 -- 59,253
09/2015: Bombshells #2 -- 37,136

An expected second issue drop. If this follows a standard sales pattern, this will end up as having the best print sales for any of DC’s digital-first titles.

(While Injustice’s print sales are lower, it still rules the roost when it comes to digital sales.)

Are you watching the Flash television show? Pretty good, yes? According to Nielsen, about 3.5 million people watched the October 13 episode. So the sales of the Flash comic are about 1% of the number of viewers of the show.

But then, it probably cost less than 1% of the cost of the television show to produce an issue of the comic book…

Probably because it’s ending with issue #6, though that will be followed-up by Green Lantern Corps: Edge of Oblivion in January. So it’s not really ending so much as changing titles and bringing on a new artist with a new #1 (aka ‘Pulling a Marvel’.)

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.

Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well. To learn (a little) more about Vertigo’s collection sales, go right here.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300/400 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300/400 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer, Heidi MacDonald or anyone at The Comics Beat, the Pacific Whale Watch Association, or my former neighbor’s dog Miles.

The author of this column does weekly snapshots of Amazon comic sales charts at http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/ and tweets about comics and related subjects on Twitter at @davereadscomics (PM me there is you need to contact me).

As always, we welcome your comments and corrections below. Please try to keep things civilized.

  1. Those are some rough looking numbers for the second biggest company. Hopefully, the indies get to pick up the slack. DC’s June new books seem like a distant memory already…

  2. “Was this ever announced as being cancelled?”

It starts its next arc in 2016 according to the last story page of Suiciders #6.

  3. I’m curious to see some books like Batgirl and Justice League United lost about a quarter of their sales across the Convergence break. Did the fans who drifted away while the books were on hiatus simply outnumber new readers willing to give those continuing titles a try with the DCYou promotion? One presumes there were some new readers, with sales on titles from Justice League and Superman to Gotham Academy being up significantly the first month after Convergence.

  4. I sincerely hope they don’t bring Nightwing back. Grayson is the first time I’ve read a Dick Grayson-solo book (where he wasn’t Batman) that I thought was actively very good. As a matter of fact, it might be DC’s best standard superhero book currently.

Returning to status quo here seems like a bad move, I mean, does Nightwing really move units either? The numbers you have are for #1 and #0, but what was the end of the Higgins run doing?

  5. @Kyle: The lowest that the New 52 Nightwing series ever sold was 36,814 (the penultimate issue, #29), and that was without the benefit of a freely-orderable variant. Near the end of its run it appeared to be stabilizing in the mid- to upper-30K range.

The pre-New 52 Nightwing series generally sold around 30K in the latter part of its run, more (sometimes much more) when it was part of a Batman crossover. The lowest figure that I have for it was 28,363 for issue #137 in Oct 2007 (my sales data only goes back to 2001).

  6. “Perhaps it is time to bring Nightwing back?”

Dear comicbook Godz, please! I dig Dick Grayson but, I’m pretty sick of super-spy Agent 37. I read about Dick Grayson because he’s Batman’s sidekick that grew into his own heroic identity, not because he’s some lame 007/Tom Cruise rip-off.
Also the fanservice on this book is ridiculous. I can’t imagine if this was a book with a female protagonist.

  7. @rikk Odinson – why try to imagine? There have been tons of books that treated its female characters like Grayson does its male. The fact that its actually doing it with a male character is what is novel. And that’s OK – men have had it good for a while, we can take it.

  8. Regarding low sales on Harley Quinn and Power Girl compared to the regular Harley series – perhaps this can be taken as a statement of the power of “ongoing” vs. “mini series” – ?

  9. Glenn Simpson—Uh, because it’s still wrong? I thought comics were trying to be more inclusive and respectful but because it’s a male character that makes it okay? I’m not some whiny butt-hurt fan that can’t handle it but I am a comics fan that thinks it’s highly hypocritical to call out sexism on female characters while praising the same behavior on male characters. That’s not progress. It’s just shifting the paradigm to another sex.

  10. I imagine there is a school of thought that the practice of objectifying the main character is not wrong in and of itself, as long as it is applied fairly. It hasn’t been applied fairly in the past, but we are getting there.

  11. I subscribe to that school of thought. Superheroes are supposed to be sexy and attractive ideals; there are ways to have them look good without being tacky or insulting. And the reason the paradigm is shifted to the other sex by some creators is a direct response to the previous double standard.

  12. “Uh, because it’s still wrong? I thought comics were trying to be more inclusive and respectful but because it’s a male character that makes it okay?”

Grayson is an immediate demonstration of efforts to be more inclusive and respectful – male characters are rarely treated as sex objects for the benefit of female readers, whereas the reverse is almost always the case. Allowing for a single exception hurts nobody.
