Now it seems...surprise! They are going to Marvel! With a magazine reminiscent of the old Welsh magazine titles for the newsstand -- for those old enough to remember -- or Nickelodeon Magazine for the Gen Y set.
Continue ReadingChester Brown's PAYING FOR IT is sure to be one of the most-discussed GNs of the year, and D&Q has just released the final cover. In case you missed the log line, it's an account of Brown's decade-long practice of hiring prostitutes and his arguments for the dignity and necessity of the profession -- in Canada certain forms of prostitution are legal, but that situation is changing for the worse, and Brown makes a pretty impassioned plea in the book to expand on the legalization of what really should be a business transaction between adults. We've read the whole thing, and while we're not quite on board with some of of it, he does make a good case for keeping things safe and legal. The book will have an intro by R. Crumb and blurbs from many famous folks, including Neil Gaiman, who writes:
Continue ReadingAs part of its bankruptcy proceedings filed this morning, Borders has announced that it will close some 200 stores nationwide -- you can see if yours will be hit in this interactive map. Chicago has been particularly stripped, with half their 430 stores set to close. According to documents, Borders has $1.29 billion in debt and $1.27 billion in assets; it hopes to boost the bottom line by closing these 200 stores which were losing $2 million a week for the company

Continue ReadingWhile Beat pal and cartoonist Batton Lash probably wouldn't mind being on MSNBC, this may not have been the context he'd have preferred. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell attempted to go Olbermann last night on Obama Nation, the cartoon by James Hudnall and Lash that runs regularly on the right-wing Big Hollywood website. O'Donnell is not a fan of Lash's cartoon stylings in a comic that mocked Michelle Obama's ongoing battles against American obesity, which some think have gone too far by banning the kind of unhealthy crap that makes life worth living:

The current New York-based publicity team of David Hyde, Pamela Mullins, and Austin Trunick will report to Simmons, who has worked for Disney, Sony and Lego -- we'd say that covers it all.
