We were bound to get some casting soon on what’s aiming to be one of the biggest “television” series since HBO’s Game of Thrones i.e. Amazon Studios’ Lord of the Rings series. Sure enough, actor Will Poulter, recently seen in Midsommar, has been cast in an undisclosed role, according to Variety.

This comes just a month after Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director Juan Bayona was hired to direct the pilot and exec. produce the series.

As is often the case with these things, Poulter’s actual role isn’t being disclosed, but it is thought to be one of the show’s lead roles. Granted, Poulter is 6’2″ so imagining him as a hobbit or an elf might be pushing it, although he does have rather elven facial characteristics that might make one think more towards that direction.

Besides appearing in Midsommar, Poulter has had prominent roles in “The Maze Runner” franchise, the Oscar-winning The Revenant, the Black Mirror “choose your own adventure” movie Bandsersnatch, but me? I’ll always remember him as the Son of Rambow in Garth Jennings’ underrated 2007 comedy classic. Poulter made that movie when he was 13 years old, and it’s paved the way for at least two Taika Waititi movies, including the upcoming Jojo Rabbit.

Still no word on when the production on the 20-episode first season might begin, and more importantly, when we might actually see this series air — hopefully sometime in mid-to-late 2020 — but Poulter seems like a good start to casting a series that’s going to be eyed rather heavily by fans of the Oscar-winning Peter Jackson trilogy.

Um, you forget that Tolkien’s Elves are tall–often really tall. But, yeah, no hobbits in the Second Age.
