Over this past weekend, during the 2026 Ringo Awards ceremony in Baltimore, Jim Lee received the Hero Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award. The honor recognizes a career spanning decades, from his influential work on X-Men and WildC.A.T.s to Batman: Hush, as well as his ascension to leadership at DC Comics.

Jim Lee’s career has an unusual trajectory compared to a lot of comic book artists. Educated at Princeton, he originally planned to follow his father into medicine. Instead, Lee instead made his professional comics debut as an inker for Solson’s Samurai Santa in 1986. His subsequent work on Marvel’s Punisher War Journal and Uncanny X-Men earned him an increasingly devoted following, culminating in the launch of the adjectiveless X-Men in 1991. That first issue remains the best-selling comic book of all time at 8.1 million copies sold.

In 1992, Lee co-founded Image Comics and launched WildC.A.T.s  with Brandon Choi. His WildStorm universe expanded from there, notably helping reshape – and diversify the superhero genre for a new generation of readers. After selling WildStorm to DC in 1998, Lee illustrated major projects including Batman: Hush, Superman: For Tomorrow, and Justice League. Of the course of a handful of mergers by DC’s parent company, Warner Bros., Lee became DC’s president, publisher, and chief creative officer. All while continuing to draw comics.
